Things to Know Before Buying BBQ Utensils
There’s no better way to make the most of sunny weather than a big ol’ BBQ!
BBQ cooking can be something of an art form, and having the right utensils can certainly make it a more pleasant and enjoyable experience.
Being prepared with the best BBQ utensils helps everything go off without a hitch. Plus, utensil sets often come with a compact carry case so you can take them wherever you go!
There are a range of BBQ utensil sets out there, some better suited to certain tasks than others. If you’re not sure what to look for, the following tips will help you make an informed decision:
BBQ tool sets can be as extensive or as minimalist as you like. The simplest set on my list contains just 3 essential BBQ utensils, while the most extravagant comes with 26 different accessories!
At a bare minimum, I recommend looking for a fork, tongs and a spatula. Other mid-range sets tend to come with a basting brush, corn-on-the-cob holders and skewers. If you’re not going to use any of these extra items, you might find that you’re perfectly fine with just a basic set.
The most extensive (and in fact, expensive!) sets may contain forks, steak knives, and perhaps even a bottle opener. These sets are great if you want to have everything with you in a portable carry case. They’re a better choice if you have a portable BBQ and are cooking remotely because you’ll have everything you need with you.
If you’re just cooking at home, you may find it excessive to have a set which provides you with forks and knives which you could just bring out from the kitchen.
Some utensil sets include a cleaning brush which is an often overlooked tool. These are actually extremely helpful and will make it a lot easier to clean your BBQ after use – often the most dreaded task!
Other handy accessories may include a meat thermometer and heatproof gloves.
The best material for BBQ utensils tends to be stainless steel.
This is durable and lightweight, plus very affordable. Also, if the utensils are made entirely of stainless steel then they can be washed in the dishwasher which is an excellent time saver.
Some utensils are made from stainless steel but have wooden handles. These won’t get hot while you cook, so are ideal if you prefer not to wear gloves. As a general rule it’s best not to put wooden items in the dishwasher as the temperature extremes can cause the wood to warp, but many people do throw them in of course. It’s up to you, but just be aware that wooden parts of items may not last as long if frequently washed in the dishwasher.
The handle length and comfort is very important, both for safety and practicality.
The reason most kitchen utensils aren’t suitable for BBQs is because the handles are too short. This means you need to get closer to the heat, which can be very dangerous. I highly recommend looking for long handled utensils, so you can keep your hands well out the way as you show off your culinary mastery at the BBQ.
If the handles are shorter, it’s important that they are heat resistant. Wooden or rubber handles are best as these stay cool, even as they get closer to the heat. Stainless steel handles can get hot.
Handle comfort is equally important. I recommend looking for grippy and ergonomic handles – nothing worse than a slippy tool when you’ve got warm hands from the BBQ!
Almost all the tools that I have reviewed below come with an included storage box or case. If you’re looking for a way to be really organised when you BBQ, as well as have all the right tools with you, this is the way to go. A storage case keeps your utensils safe and separated from the rest of your kitchen equipment. It also makes it easier to take your BBQ tools on the go, whether that’s to the beach or on camping trips!
These cases are often split into compartments which allow you to keep your utensils neat and tidy. They always look extremely aesthetically pleasing because of how orderly everything is – much better than just chucking a couple of plastic forks and some spoons into some Tupperware when you have a picnic and hoping you didn’t forget anything!
It’s also good to look out for utensils which have holes or loops on the end. These will allow you to hang utensils from hooks on your BBQ which is both hygienic, because you don’t need to rest them on any surfaces, and convenient – you’ll be able to grab the right utensil instantly!
BBQ Utensil FAQs
For successful BBQing, there are a few tools that are essential, and some which are simply convenient to have. In the ‘essentials’ column: a large fork (for pricking sausages), a spatula and tongs.
If you are feeling extra fancy, a basting brush for coating meat is important, and steak knives are always appreciated by your guests! Skewers can be loaded with vegetables and placed on the grill.
For safety, I recommend having a heat-resistant glove and an apron to hand.
Although they have a high heat resistance, you shouldn’t leave your silicone utensils on the hot grill. However, they can be used to pick up very hot food. They are also easy to clean which is a nice plus.
While silicone is a good option for utensils, they may not have the strength to pick up heavier foods. If you are purchasing silicone utensils, ensure they have a strong metal core for stability and durability.
Putting the lid on your BBQ can trap heat in the grill, meaning you can cook food using convection. The lid increases the temperature of the air in the grill and will allow you to better control the heat and cooking process.
If you are smoking your food, you’ll trap more flavour into the meat by shutting the lid and trapping the smoke inside.
