Electric Chainsaw FAQ
How to use a chainsaw?
Chainsaws can look intimidating, but with a little practise, you should find your new tool relatively simple to use. First, ensure you have the right protective gear, including goggles, ear protection and gloves. If you’re cutting branches above your head, a hard hat is essential.
Before you begin, check you have enough oil in the oil tank. Start the chainsaw (which should be relatively easy with an electric model), gripping it firmly and remembering to watch out for trip hazards.
Try tackling smaller logs before you attempt anything difficult. Focus on getting a clean cut on small pieces of wood, and remember to take a break if you’re tired. Most chainsaws should come with a shoulder strap to lighten the load.
How to sharpen a chainsaw?
To sharpen a chainsaw you’ll need a filling kit and a pair of gloves. Engage the chain brake and clamp the bar in a vice. Use the tension adjusting screw to tighten the chain – it should be tight but still able to move around the saw.
Mark your first tooth so you know where you began sharpening, then set your file in the notch in front of the cutter. The angle for filing is normally between 25 and 30 degrees.
File the cutter 3 to 10 times until it is sharp, sharpening every second tooth before rotating the chainsaw and sharpening the teeth facing the opposite direction.
How to start a chainsaw?
Electric chainsaws are very easy to start. Simply connect the power cord, lay your chainsaw on a flat surface and press the throttle until the chainsaw begins to run.
Petrol chainsaws are a little trickier although many now come equipped with easy start technology. Before starting your petrol chainsaw, ensure the chain brake is activated and remove the bar cover.
Turn the power switch on and pump the primer valve. Lay it on a flat surface and pull hard several times on the starter rope while supporting the chainsaw with your other hand. Pull it upward as straight as you can until the chainsaw begins to run.
How to cut a hedge with a chainsaw?
Ensure you have the right protective equipment and that the area is safe. Cut from waist height, never allowing the chainsaw above your shoulder. You should cut from the saw’s side to avoid kickback, and never cut too close to the ground. If you are struggling with a chainsaw, a hedge trimmer may be a safer option.
How to cut down a tree with a chainsaw?
To cut a tree safely, you must first ensure you’re wearing the right protective equipment and that the area around you is safe. You should have a clear escape route for when the tree falls.
Pick a direction for the tree to fall. Ideally, it should fall in the direction it’s already leaning. First, remove low branches with your chainsaw. Then make a notch in the tree by making two face cuts. These cuts should be about 24” from the ground and reaching about 25% into the tree.
Once you’ve cut the notch, make the back saw. This will create a hinge for the tree to fall. Cut from the back towards the notch, stopping when you are a few inches away. The tree should start to fall, so stay calm and move away quickly.
Electric chainsaws are generally quieter and easier to use than their fuel powered counterparts, perfect for low key garden jobs or cutting down small trees. For the powerful brushless motor, lightweight design and ease of use, the Dewalt DCM565N Chainsaw is our top recommendation for the best battery chainsaw.
