Fire Extinguisher Reviews

Editors Choice
  • Compared with the chunky FireShield Pro fire extinguisher, this thing can be stashed away almost anywhere. Going camping? It won’t take up much room in your tent at all.
  • It’s rated to deal with electrical, oil, textile, paper, and petrol or diesel fires. Instead of scrabbling around for the correct extinguisher, this one will put them all out.
  • Compared with traditional firefighting liquids, this stuff isn’t toxic. It means you can use it indoors or outdoors without worrying you’re going to poison yourself or your surroundings.

  • Compared to the FireShield Pro powder extinguisher, this one doesn’t come with a wall bracket. Even though it’s easy to store away, it doesn’t have a dedicated holder.
  • One of the drawbacks of such a compact fire extinguisher is how much liquid it contains. This device is ideal for small fires, but I wouldn’t want to try and fight a big fire with it.
  • Even though the firefighting liquid inside the cannister is non-toxic and eco-friendly, it has a particularly strong smell. It will soak into whatever you spray it at as well.

British home safety experts LifeSafe Technologies are becoming one of the most trusted brands when it comes to the best home fire extinguishers. They also make smoke alarms and fire blankets, but their StaySafe 5-in-1 fire extinguisher is their flagship product.

Designed to tackle five different types of fire in a small package, the LifeSafe extinguisher is something I’d be glad to have on hand in an emergency. You simply pull off the cap and aim it at the fire. A white fluid streams out and does away with almost any type of household blaze.

Looking more like a can of air freshener than a traditional fire extinguisher, this is a seriously clever bit of kit. Small enough to be stowed away in a car glovebox or kitchen drawer, it doesn’t take up too much room but can put out a range of different fires using their non-toxic firefighting formula. It’s one of the best portable fire extinguishers on the market.

2. Firexo 2 Litre ALL FIRES Extinguisher

Best liquid extinguisher for all types of fire

best fire extinguishers Firexo 2 Litre ALL FIRES Extinguisher
  • This fire extinguisher is rated to deal with all classes of fire, including Lithium Ion. For anyone with big L-Ion battery banks, this extinguisher is the only thing that will work.
  • Compared with the StaySafe fire extinguisher, this one has a lot more capacity. The 2 litre size is still compact enough for easy storage, but you can put out a lot more flames.
  • Having a pressure gauge on the side of the cannister means you can keep an eye on the level just by looking. Without a pressure gauge, you’re simply hoping it’ll work in an emergency.

  • Even though this fire extinguisher comes with a small metal bracket to hold it, there are no instructions how to fit it. It would be useful to know how and where it’s best situated.
  • Several users have complained that their fire extinguisher was delivered with low pressure. Always check the gauge first, then check it periodically to see if it’s losing accelerant.
  • Weighing in at just under 4 kg, it’s not heavy but it’s a lot less portable compared with the StaySafe extinguisher. You wouldn’t want to carry this around in a hiking rucksack.

Firefighting gurus Firexo have made it their goal to help you put out all sorts of fires. With a decent range of extinguishers and even a clever chip pan fire killer, they really know what they’re doing. Their 2 litre ALL FIRES extinguisher is a compact and versatile piece of safety equipment that you can use all around the home, in your caravan, shed, or on your next camping trip.

Designed like a traditional fire extinguisher, it comes with a pressure gauge dial on the side and the classic handle grip trigger that’s common to similar devices. As the ALL FIRES name suggests, it’s filled with a fire-killing liquid that’s safe to use on class A, B, C, D, E and F fires. And with two litres in the tank, there’s plenty to go around.

With a spray range of 1 – 3 metres, it means you can stand back from a blaze when you’re fighting it. So, whether you want to stow it away in a kitchen cupboard or in your workshop, it’s a vital bit of safety kit that you just hope you’ll never need.

3. Kidde KS Multi-Purpose Fire Extinguisher[ SAVE 15% ]

Best fire extinguisher for large range

best fire extinguishers Kidde KS Multi Purpose Fire Extinguisher
  • One of the best names in firefighting, Kidde make fire extinguishers that are rated to BS EN3 standards. And because they're CE tested you can take them with you on holiday in Europe.
  • The four metre range is impressive. If you’re confronted with a fire, the last thing you want is to get close when you need to put it out. This range allows you to stand well back.
  • The pressure gauge on the side means you can tell if it’s ready to go without picking it up and shaking it. Compared with the Super Help SH2400, testing is much easier.

  • Even though this is a high performing fire extinguisher, you need to bear in mind that you only get eight seconds of pressure. It’s enough to put out small fires only.
  • Several users have complained about the quality of the wall bracket. It’s made from flimsy plastic, and you need two hands to take it off the wall. It should be much easier than that.
  • As this is a powder fire extinguisher, it’s only rated against class A, B, and C fires. Depending on where you’re planning to keep the device, it might not be suitable for the fire type.

Kidde are one of the best established and one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fire safety products. With over a hundred years of experience in fire detection and suppression, there isn’t much they don’t know about fire safety.

Weighing in at 1 kg, this Kidde extinguisher is half the size of some of the bigger fire extinguishers on the list, but just as capable with an impressive eight-second discharge and four-meter range, which is essential when you need to stay back from a hot fire.

This small extinguisher one of the best fire extinguishers for car fires, because it packs a punch in a small package, perfect for stowing away in the car boot if the unthinkable happens. It’s rated to deal with A, B and C fires and is BSI certified to BS EN3 standards.

  • The mounting bracket means you can safely secure this fire extinguisher to the inside of your car or caravan, and it won’t roll about when driving. It’ll stay right where it’s needed.
  • The yellow plastic trigger guard is easy to remove in an emergency. Compared with the thick plastic tab on the Firexo extinguisher, this one is easy to remove by just about anyone.
  • This is one of the most affordable fire extinguishers on my list. Even though saving money shouldn’t be the main priority when it comes to safety, it doesn’t hurt the wallet!

  • Compared with the Firexo ALL FIRES extinguisher, this one is not rated for putting out electrical fires. It’s only good for small B and C fires.
  • The mounting bracket is attached to the top of the fire extinguisher only. Some users have found that over time, the trigger section can become detached from the cartridge.
  • You only have nine seconds of discharge time to put out a fire with this extinguisher. Compared with the 15 – 20 seconds you get with the Firexo, it’s not that much.

Designed by the company you trust to fix your car by the side of the road, the AA has more than a century of experience with all things automotive. The ideal firefighting tool to keep in your car then is their AA1547 lightweight powder fire extinguisher. Shipped with an integrated holder, you can attach it to the inside of your car, in the shed, or wherever you think you’ll need it.

Weighing in at just 950 g, it’s light enough to stow away almost anywhere, and because it’s a powder extinguisher it’s designed to put out class B and class C fires. If you’re keeping it in your car, it’s the perfect type of extinguisher to have as it will happily deal with flammable gas, liquid, and electrical fires.

Proudly manufactured in the UK, this is an easy-to-use device for fighting car fires. In an emergency, you simply remove the ellow tab on the handle, point it at the base of the fire, and press the trigger. And for extra peace of mind, it’s rated to British Standard BS 6165:2002.

5. Super Help SH2400 Fire Stop Small Fire Extinguisher

Best budget small fire extinguisher

best fire extinguishers Super Help SH2400 Fire Stop Small Fire Extinguisher
  • This unit is incredibly small and easy to take with you. It’s small enough to fit easily in your car, campervan, or boat. It’s even small enough to tuck into a hiking bag, just in case.
  • The plastic bracket that comes with it is easy to install and means you can stow away the fire extinguisher wherever it’s needed. It won’t take up floor space or roll about in the car.
  • The firefighting fluid inside the cannister is non-toxic and won’t harm the environment. That’s great, especially if you use it to put out a blaze in your campsite.

  • You only get 400 ml of firefighting liquid in the cannister. It’s enough to tackle a small fire before it’s had a chance to spread, but it’s nowhere near enough to kill a large fire.
  • This product is not rated to deal with electrical fires. If you really need to put out a wide range of blazes, it’s not as good compared to the Firexo ALL FIRES extinguisher.
  • As this device lacks a gauge on the side of the trigger section, you can’t tell just by looking if it’s going to work. Compared with other fire extinguishers, you’re forced to go on feel alone.

Super Help have made it their business to assist motorist by producing a useful range of driving accessories and safety devices for when you’re on the road. From wheel trims to European driving kits, they have your safety and security in mind.

This ultra-light fire extinguisher holds a lot of firefighting power in a package not that much bigger than a domestic deodorant can. This is one of the best portable fire extinguishers for stashing in a kitchen drawer, car glove box, boat or caravan that is there when you need it but doesn’t take up too much valuable space.

It comes with the added bonuses of being non-toxic, environmentally safe and ozone friendly, so you can fight fires without damaging the planet.

  • Out of all the fire extinguishers on my list, this is the only comprehensive firefighting kit. It comes with both a fire extinguisher as well as a blanket so it’s great for a range of fires.
  • You get 2 kg of dry powder in the fire extinguisher. That’s plenty of material to deal with small fires in the home or garden. It’s much more capable than a small cannister type.
  • The wall bracket that comes with the extinguisher is one of the best on my list. It’s easy to install, holds the cannister well, and doesn’t have too many fiddly straps in an emergency.

  • For use on A, B, and C class fires only. If you’re anticipating an electrical fire or have a Lithium Ion battery pack in use, it will not be able to combat those blazes.
  • Some users have complained that they have received a different type of extinguisher to the one advertised. Check the product carefully before installing it in your home.
  • The fire extinguisher is probably too big to put in a camping kit. Compared with the tiny Super Help SH2400, this one is more suitable for placing in the kitchen or shed.

FSS UK are another fire safety company based in Hampshire who provide guidance on fire risk assessments and produce an impressive range of the best fire extinguishers for the UK market.

We tested out their dry powder ABC extinguisher that’s suited for dealing with small fires on petrol, oil, gas, paint, furniture, wood, solvents and electrical equipment specifically.

The first thing to say is that you are supplied with an entire fire safety kit, with a quality CE marked fire blanket included to supplement the full 2 kg dry powder extinguisher.

This FSS extinguisher is perfect for the kitchen when used in conjunction with the blanket, as it’s the best fire safety choice for tackling pan fires and other kitchen fires. Along with the wall-mounted bracket, this pair of fire safety devices are on hand for when they’re needed.

7. FireShield Pro ABC Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher[ SAVE 24% ]

Best budget 2 litre fire extinguisher

best fire extinguishers FireShield Pro ABC Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher
  • Compared with the flimsy plastic bracket you get with the AA Car Essentials fire extinguisher this one is the business. It feels like a proper wall bracket and shouldn’t break easily.
  • On top of being able to deal with class A, B, and C fires, this unit can also put out electrical blazes.
  • Weighing in at 2 kg, this extinguisher contains plenty of firefighting material. It’s not much heavier than the other fire extinguishers on my list, but it can deal with bigger blazes.

  • Don’t expect to be able to tuck this extinguisher in a small drawer or camping kit. It’s one of the bigger devices on my list and more suitable for home or office use.
  • Some users have complained that the extinguisher discharged itself during transport. It could be a fault with the safety pin, or a lack of quality control in some items.
  • Check carefully before buying a fire extinguisher whether it’s rated to tackle the type of fire you might experience in your home or workshop. This one will not tackle all types of fire.

FireShield are a home-grown fire safety company based in the heart of South West England. They have provided a comprehensive range of specialist fire safety equipment since 1993 to private, trade and council clients, and are full members of the British Approvals for Fire Equipment scheme.

We took a look at the FireShield Pro dry powder extinguisher, and really liked the fact that it offers the full functionality of their larger fire extinguishers in a package that’s small enough to mount in the back of a car or caravan for use when it’s really needed.

It’s also one of the best home fire extinguishers in this size that we’ve tested. It’s BS EN3 and CE certified, has a five-year warranty and is suitable for type A, B and C fires.

Harry's Smart Buying Tips

  1. Fire extinguishers should be tested and certified for the specific fire classifications they are designed to tackle. A CE certification means you can use the unit in the EU. The fire rating should be clearly displayed on the side of the unit.
  2. There are several fire extinguisher types.
  3. The cheapest and most basic fire extinguishers are water-based and designed to handle class A fires (combustible materials, e.g. paper and wood). Some water fire extinguishers contain a chemical additive that makes them more efficient in tackling class-A fires.
  4. AFFF foam fire extinguishers are effective at handling both class A and class B fires (flammable liquids, e.g. paint and petrol).
  5. Whilst as their name suggests ABC extinguishers or dry powder fire extinguishers are very widely used and can deal with class C fires (flammable gases, e.g. methane and butane) as well as class A and B fires.
  6. The most common type of fire extinguisher used for tackling electrical appliances such as computers, monitors and cables is a class E fire extinguisher and contains carbon dioxide.
  7. The most common type of fire extinguisher found in commercial kitchens is class F. This wet chemical extinguisher is very effective at handling burning oil from deep fat fryers.
  8. Many fire extinguishers can handle more than one class of fire. The best type of fire extinguisher is multi-purpose and can tackle classes A through F, class D fires being combustible metals, e.g. aluminium and magnesium.
  9. Compact fire extinguishers are popular in kitchens, cars, campers, caravans and boats as they can be stashed away in small spaces – these units tend to hold a non-toxic eco-friendly fluid as opposed to the larger, more traditional carbon dioxide, foam or powder fire extinguishers that are prevalent in commercial establishments and offices.
  10. A pressure gauge is common on larger canisters and is really handy for indicating the remaining level of accelerant.
  11. The length of discharge time to put out a fire is also important – 8 to 15 seconds is a ballpark figure to aim for.

Fire Extinguisher FAQs

Fire safety products will have clear markings on them that state what type of fire they are designed to tackle. Usually referred to as A, B, C or F fires, they are often colour coded as well.

Water Red, class A. Suitable for fighting fires on wood, paper or textiles

Dry Powder Blue, class A, B or C. Suitable for fighting fires on wood, paper or textiles, flammable liquids, gaseous fires and live electrical equipment

Foam Cream, class A & B. Suitable for fighting fires on wood, paper or textiles and flammable liquids

CO2 Black, class B. Suitable for fighting fires on flammable liquids and live electrical equipment

Wet Chemical Yellow, class A & F. Suitable for fighting fires on wood, paper or textiles and cooking oil fires

Before installing a fire extinguisher, it’s essential that you read the instructions on your fire safety equipment carefully and familiarise yourself with how to operate it safely. Not all fire safety devices are the same, but the best fire extinguisher should be easy to use.

Unlock the fire extinguisher by pulling the pin or disengaging the safety mechanism.

Point the fire extinguisher at the base of the fire, where it is hottest and where the combustion is situated.

Squeeze the handle to release the firefighting powder, liquid, gas or foam. Sweep it across the base of the fire until it is out.

Always read the instructions on the side of the fire safety device. It will clearly state what fire it is suitable for tackling, and also what types of fire to avoid. CO2 fire extinguishers should never be used in confined spaces because the CO2 that stifles the fire will also lessen the amount of breathable oxygen in the air.
