7 Best Key Safes (2021 Review)

The best key safes should have a robust zinc or aluminium body to protect them from hammering and prying. It’s also important that the combination keys or push buttons are either protected by a waterproof cover or weather shield. Don’t neglect wall fixings – ensure quality bolts and screws, washers and plugs are all provided.

It also goes without saying that the space inside the key safe should be large enough to contain your keys and valuables.

A key safe is a shortcut to peace of mind when it comes to home security, and infinitely more reliable than putting the key under the mat. I’ve tested out the best key safes available right now, so read on to see what I found out…

Master Lock Light Up Combination Key Safe review

Specifications

  • Type: Combination Key
  • Mounting: Wall Fixing
  • No. of Keys or Buttons: 4 Combination Keys
  • Cover / Shutter: Yes
  • Exterior Dimensions: 12.6 x 7.2 x 5.2cm
  • Interior Dimensions: 10.3 x 5.7 x 2.5cm

One of the biggest names in home security for more than a century, Master Lock make some of the best key safes on the market. The 5425EURD light up combination key safe is like having a mini fortress that only you can get into.

Their four digit combination key safe is a weatherproof and totally reliable place to stash your valuables. You can stop leaving the spare key under the mat now. It’s an ideal outside storage space for entry cards as well thanks to the large internal size of the safe.

One thing I really like about this key safe is the light up dial. When you open the weather cover, a small LED illuminates the combination rollers from behind. No more fumbling for a torch in the dark when you’ve locked yourself out!

This is a great solution for anyone who rents out their property or needs to leave a key for site access. You can give out the combination, then change it at any time. Mounting the key safe is straightforward, and the instructions included with it are easy to follow.

Pros

  • This is a solid, dependable key safe from one of the best names in the business. Master Lock have a solid reputation built over decades, and lots of people trust them with their valuables.
  • The weatherproof cover is a snug fit and will make sure no water can get into the key safe.
  • The light up dials mean you can place the key safe in a concealed location. It’s easy to see, so you could hide it away and still enter the combination.
  • The internal space inside the key safe is large enough for a small bunch of keys. There’s plenty of room compared with the Rhino secure home lock.

Cons

  • The light up part of the key safe requires batteries. They’ll probably last for ages, but it’s another consumable you’ve got to think about.
  • Several users have complained about the quality of the included mounting screws. For a seriously secure fixing, upgrade them to wall bolts or concrete screws.
  • Unless you position the key safe in a concealed area, a burglar could pull it off the wall with a crowbar. Make sure it’s positioned where it can’t be pried.
  • There’s nowhere to hang your keys inside the key safe. A couple of little hooks would make all the difference.

Master Lock Combination Key Safe with Adjustable Shackle review

Specifications

  • Type: Combination Key
  • Mounting: Shackle
  • No. of Keys or Buttons: 4 Combination Keys
  • Cover / Shutter: Yes
  • Exterior Dimensions: 17.5 x 7.2 x 4.2cm
  • Interior Dimensions: 8.8 x 5.7 x 2.5cm

Another stellar key safe from the trusted team at Master Lock, the 5420EURD select access lock box is a formidable bit of kit. If you don’t fancy drilling into your wall or it’s not possible to mount your key safe, this is like a padlock with benefits.

Featuring a snug hinged weatherproof cover and sturdy steel construction, this tough and lockable key storage. It won’t get damaged by the wind and rain and has space for four large keys inside.

I really like the removable shackle on this key safe. It means you can fit the entire assembly over a doorknob or on a railing if you need to. It makes this key safe wonderfully versatile, an ideal solution for estate agents, holiday home rentals or other times when temporary access is needed.

The four digit combination lock feels completely solid and clicks round with positive stops on the numbers. I think this is an ingenious way to temporarily give access to someone, or when you can’t permanently attach a key safe to a wall.

Pros

  • The unique padlock style key safe presents new options when it comes to home security. You can leave keys or other valuables attached to door handles, fences, or railings if you need to.
  • The weatherproof cover is hinged, so you don’t need to worry about losing it when you open the key safe.
  • You could use the key safe with a length of chain or security wire as a combination padlock if you needed it.
  • The four combination rollers give you a possible 10,000 numbers to choose from. This makes it much harder to guess compared to the Supra 500 wall mounted key safe.

Cons

  • If you use this key safe on a door handle, make sure it doesn’t get in the way of the door frame. It can stop it from opening from the inside.
  • It’s bigger than you might think. 17.5 x 7.2 x 4.2cm is probably too large for some doorknobs. Carefully measure where you want it to go, to avoid disappointment.
  • A shackle type lock isn’t quite as secure as one permanently attached to a wall with anchors. This key safe is more suited to allowing temporary access than anything else.
  • Compared with the Master Lock 5420EURD, the internal space is shorter. It might not be big enough for some security key cards.

BeskooHome Waterproof Combination Key Lock Box review

Specifications

  • Type: Combination Key
  • Mounting: Wall Fixing
  • No. of Keys or Buttons: 4 Combination Keys
  • Cover / Shutter: No
  • Exterior Dimensions: 11.8 x 8.5 x 4.1cm
  • Interior Dimensions: 9.4 x 6.5 x 3.2cm

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly but solid solution to home security, BeskooHome are the right choice. From combination padlocks to Faraday cages for your car keys, their business is keeping your things safe.

The wall-mounted key safe that I tried out has a robust zinc alloy body. It’s similar in design to some of the more expensive key safe options, so it’s protected against hammering and prying. The weather shield over the combination tumblers should keep them free of dust and water ingress.

Overall, this must be one of the best external key safes for the money. It’s spacious enough inside for several keys and can handle up to 10,000 different combinations.

Pros

  • You get a similar level of security as the Master Lock 5420EURD, but for a lot less money. It doesn’t have all the features, but it’s still a solid choice.
  • The heavy duty steel construction makes this key safe hard to break in to or saw apart. Most users have agreed that this is a well put together key safe.
  • It’s easy to change the combination. This makes it an ideal key safe for a holiday let. Simply give the new code out when your guests arrive, and change it when they leave.

Cons

  • Upgrade the wall fixing screws from the ones supplied with the key safe. The weak point of a lock box like this is that it can be pried from the wall with a crowbar. Bigger screws can stop that.
  • Some users have complained that the combination tumblers can become stiff over time. This makes opening the box more difficult than it should be.
  • Make sure you test out the key safe before you start using it to store keys. Some users have had issues with the opening mechanism. Don’t lock your keys inside accidentally!

Supra C500 Wall Mounted Key Safe review

  • Cover / Shutter: No
  • Exterior Dimensions: 14.3 x 7.9 x 6.4cm
  • Interior Dimensions: 7.9 x 5.1 x 2.2cm

For more than 60 years, Supra have continued to innovate in the field of locking systems for homes and commercial properties. They’re one of the most trusted brands when it comes to choosing the best key safe box.

I checked out the Supra C500 Wall Mounted KeySafe, and love the robust design. The Supra key safe uses a hard zinc alloy body that can resist puncture and is, as they say, “as safe as your front door”. The push button lock allows you to choose your own entry code between 1 – 12 characters using numbers and letters.

This Supra key box is part of the police-backed “Secured by Design” initiative, so you can trust this is the best outdoor key safe that money can buy.

Pros

  • This is a wonderfully small and streamlined key safe. If you need to conceal where you stash your spares, you can really hide this little safe. It’s the smallest one on my list.
  • It’s the original police-accredited key safe. If they think it’s a good idea, I’m inclined to believe them!
  • Even though it’s small, the zinc body on this key safe is incredibly solid. A burglar wouldn’t bother to try and saw through it.

Cons

  • Compared with the Master Lock 5420EURD, there’s no weatherproof cover. Rainwater and dust could work its way into the mechanism over time.
  • There are fewer possible combinations to choose from. Compared with the 10,000 available on the BeskooHome lock box, it’s a bit less secure.
  • You can’t set a true combination. If you press the four numbers or letters in any sequence, the key safe will open. That’s nowhere near as safe in comparison with the tumbler combination on the Dexter Innovations key safe.

Dexter Innovations Wall Mounted Key Safe review

Specifications

  • Type: Combination Key
  • Mounting: Wall Fixing
  • No. of Keys or Buttons: 4 Combination Keys
  • Cover / Shutter: Yes
  • Exterior Dimensions: 11.5 x 9.0 x 4.0cm
  • Interior Dimensions: 9.0 x 7.0 x 3.5cm

With an interesting roster of useful gadgets, Dexter Innovations have produced one of the best external key safes I’ve tried out. It’s got a larger internal space for your spare keys without being enormous on the outside.

It’s remarkably easy to install on a wall with four screws, and it should stay secure for a long time.

I like the sliding weather shield that protects the combination tumblers from the elements. This complements the black stealthy look of the lock box. It also helps it blend into the background effectively. This outdoor key safe is a simple solution for keeping several keys safe when you’re out and about.

Pros

  • I like the extra security fittings you get with this key safe. It comes with wall plugs as well as screws, and a big washer to stop it being pulled through a wall.
  • You can install the key safe on a wall or through the peep hole in a door. It makes it possible to install it if you’re not allowed to drill into an external wall in a rental property.
  • Dexter Innovations are a family-run UK business. They pride themselves on good quality control, which makes a change.
  • Changing the code is a piece of cake. It takes about 20 seconds once you’ve done it a couple of times. It makes the key safe a lot more secure if you’re keen to change the code often.

Cons

  • This key safe has one of those small weather covers that can work loose over time. They slide downwards as well, meaning that gravity is against them staying closed.
  • Opening and closing the key safe door can be tricky. There’s no easy way of getting a grip on the door. It helps to keep out thieves but can keep the owner out as well!
  • The internal space is good, but a lot of the top part is then filled up with the lock mechanism. You can’t easily store a bunch of keys, just single ones.
  • Compared with the excellent Master Lock 5425EURD’s light up keypad, it can be hard to see the tumblers on this one in the dark. Make sure you’ve got a torch to hand.

Rhino Lock Heavy Duty Wall Mounted Security Key Safe review

Specifications

  • Type: Combination Key
  • Mounting: Wall Fixing
  • No. of Keys or Buttons: 4 Combination Keys
  • Cover / Shutter: No
  • Exterior Dimensions: 15.0 x 9.5 x 5.0 cm
  • Interior Dimensions: 8.5 x 7.8 x 5.3cm

Specialist security company Rhino Lock are a UK based firm. They’ve made it their business to manufacture a range of the best external key safes for the UK market.

The first thing you notice about the Rhino Secure Home lock is the design. Shaped like a miniature house, this master lock key safe is instantly recognisable. It adds a touch of character to your home security as well. The roof section should act as real-life weather proofing as well.

Our favourite feature of this combination key safe must be the failsafe emergency key. It seems simple but having a way to bypass a forgotten code or damaged tumbler is another level of security. Combination locks are great, but if you forget it, you’re stuffed!

Pros

  • The internal space is incredibly generous. You get more than double the room compared with the Master Lock 5420EURD.
  • Unlike the Dexter Innovations key safe, the lock mechanism doesn’t steal a lot of the precious space.
  • You don’t just get one override key, but a pair of them.
  • Being able to override a combination lock is clever. If you run a holiday let and change the code so often you forget it, you can always use your backup.

Cons

  • This key safe doesn’t feature a weatherproof cover. The combination rollers are exposed to the elements, which could shorten their working life.
  • As good as the roof design looks, I’m worried that a thief could hook a crowbar under the “eaves”. It could be a weak spot.
  • It’s a sturdy key safe, but it’s made from an aluminium alloy. For extra protection against attack, I would always opt for steel. It’s harder to pry or drill.

For more than a quarter of a century, Solon Security have produced quality home security products under the Defender brand name. Gaining a Secured by Design accreditation, you can trust that their key box will be one of the best key safes in the business.

I like the Defender outdoor key safe I tried out. It’s simple, robust, and well designed. The large push-buttons on the lock box are easy to see and operate. This makes it handy for anyone with mobility problems. The entire front is covered with a rubber weather-shield, so there shouldn’t be any problems in the wind and rain.

Lastly, the included Thunderbolt self-tapping bolts are some of the most secure fixings around. Luckily, they’re much easier to install than they are to remove. You can be sure that one of the best outdoor key safes on this list won’t fall off any time soon.

Pros

  • The only key safe on my list to have a handy hook inside to hold your keys. It seems so obvious, but even the Master Lock 5425EURD has forgotten one.
  • The weatherproof front is just that. It’s a rubber case that envelopes the whole key safe. When it’s in place, nothing’s getting in or out.
  • The fact that Defender include Thunderbolt fixings is great. Compared to the tiny screws that come with the BeskooHome key safe, they’re much stronger.
  • There’s plenty of internal room in this key safe. Enough to store a bunch of keys, which is a welcome design feature.
  • A push-button locking system can be much easier to use for people with mobility problems. Rolling tiny tumblers isn’t ideal for anyone that has finger dexterity issues.

Cons

  • Several users have complained that the weatherproof case breaks too easily. The rubber “hinge” on the bottom wears out and splits, letting the cover fall off.
  • Compared with the four tumbler combination lock on the Master Lock 5420EURD, the push button system isn’t as secure. You can punch in the four number code in any combination.
  • Unless you locate this key safe in a corner, it might be easy to pry off the wall with a crowbar. Compared to the Supra C500 it’s square in shape. I prefer a rounded key safe.

Key Safe FAQs

How do I open a key safe?

Although all key safes are built differently, opening them is usually quite similar. You’ll have to input the code before either turning a knob or pressing down on a slide mechanism. If it doesn’t work the first time on a tumbler combination key safe, you roll the numbers around to reset them. On a push-button keysafe, there should be a “clear” button that resets the process.

How do I change a code on a key safe?

The best key safes allow you to change the code easily, and some even allow you to choose a code length from 1 – 12 digits. The process will vary depending on the key box, but it will usually involve the following steps:

  1. Enter the correct code to open the key safe box
  2. Pressing an internal lever or button will allow you to set a new code on combination tumbler locks
  3. For push-button key safes, press the internal button to reset, then use the included key to input a new code
  4. Close the key safe again for the new code to be set
