Smidge Mosquito Repellent Review

Smidge Insect Repellent is the best mosquito repellent spray on the market because it lasts 8 hours, smells goods, and is water and sweat resistant.

It contains no DEET but uses 20% Picardin (Saltidin) which is recommended by the World Health Organisation for protection against mosquitos.

Smidge lasts eight hours and because it’s sweat and waterproof, you have no worries about reapplying – that’s always a pain if you’re travelling, playing sports, or looking after kids.

And speaking of kids, Smidge is suitable for children over the age of 30 months. Its pleasant smell and non-sticky texture mean your kids won’t go ballistic every time you wave the spray at them – we all know it’s bad enough trying to apply sunblock, let alone another layer.

There’s 75ml in the aluminium pump spray, so it’s lightweight enough for travelling and easy to pop in your backpack.

If you want the best natural mosquito repellent to scare off mosquitos, scottish midges, horse flies, ticks, and other biting vampires, Smidge is the ideal choice!

Pyramid Trek Mosquito Repellent With Deet Review

If you’re a fan of deet then check out Pyramid’s best deet mosquito repellent. It has 50% deet so it’s super strong and perfect for tropical holidays in Zika virus or Dengue fever prone areas such as sub-Saharan Africa.

The can contains 60mls so it’s a suitable size for hand luggage and uses a pump spray – a godsend if you’re in a mosquito heavy area and need to stay protected at all times!

This maximum strength insect repellent will last six hours and is suitable for children over 12. Don’t use it if you’re pregnant or on younger children though because this is strong stuff.

Made and approved in the UK, Pyramid’s Trek mozzie repellent is reliable and trustworthy. If you’re serious about repelling mosquitoes (or sand flies and ticks) you’re in safe hands.

Pyramid Trek Sensitive Non Deet Mosquito Repellent Review

Pyramid Trek Sensitive is the best non-deet mosquito repellent on the market. If you want to keep your kids safe from biting insects, or you don’t like chemicals on your skin, this is the best choice.

Just as effective as Pyramid’s 50% Deet spray, this all-natural offering is non-greasy, sweat and water-resistant, and can be used by pregnant women and children over 2.

It has a lovely fresh scent and is formulated to suit sensitive skin, even though it repels mosquitoes. It does this using 20% saltidin – an alternative to DEET that is less irritating to the skin.

One application from this 100ml bottle lasts all day and protects you against a broad spectrum of biting insects by slowly releasing its ingredients.

A great high protection choice for kiddies, pregnant women and anyone who prefers more natural products.

Jungle Formula Mosquito Repellent Spray Review

Jungle Formula is a well-known, trustworthy brand and their non-aerosol 50% DEET spray is an excellent choice for adults over 17 who need high protection from biting insects.

This is one of the best outdoor mosquito repellents around. It lasts for nine hours and is endorsed by the Hospital of Tropical Diseases. You can’t get better for travel to far-flung places that have Zika virus, Dengue fever and West Nile fever transmitted by mosquitoes.

Of course, you don’t need to go abroad to use this excellent mosquito repellent. If you get bitten to death right here in the UK, apply this and wave goodbye to those little vampires.

Mosquito Repellent Buyer’s Guide

Where on Earth do you start when the best mosquito repellent is on your shopping list? Right here!

Deet or not to Deet?

The main choice you have to make is whether to use DEET or go for an alternative less irritating formula.

Deet is diethyltoluamide and it was developed for use in 1944 by the US army. It can be an irritant to some people and shouldn’t be used by pregnant women or young children. It can also damage clothing – but there’s no arguing against its effectiveness. Mozzies hate it.

Non DEET formulas contain saltidin which was developed by BAYER as an alternative. It’s less toxic, non-irritant and widely tolerated.

And then there’s Citripel, also called Citriodiol. This is produced from oil of lemon eucalyptus. It’s a strong repellent and safe for children.

All three ingredients are clinically approved insect repellents, so the choice is yours.

Long-Lasting

If you’re in a midge or mosquito prone area the last thing you want to do is apply insect repellent every hour.

That’s why the best mosquito repellents will last for hours even if you sweat or get rained on. Look for products with long wear time.

Size of Bottle

Big isn’t always best. If you’re travelling then a lightweight bottle will fit in your luggage and won’t weigh you down.

Spray, Lotion, or Roll-On

Most people prefer a spray, but if you choose which you like to apply, then the chances are you’ll put it on regularly and apply it properly.

Conclusion

Mosquitos and other biting insects are an uncomfortable pain in the UK and they’re dangerous abroad, so choosing the best mosquito repellent is important.

My recommendations above are the best mosquito sprays whether they contain DEET, Saltidin, or Citripel.

Remember to get any required vaccinations before travelling abroad and take note of any recommendations not to travel to mosquito prone areas before you book a ticket.
