Who knew that seaweed was the vital ingredient missing from our lawns? The manufacturers at Maxicrop certainly didn’t let this information pass them by, and have found a way to harness seaweed’s potential in their Moss Killer and Lawn Tonic. It contains a wide variety of nutrients to kill off moss and improve lawn health, with the seaweed extract helping to stimulate grass regrowth and establish stronger roots.

The idea of healthier grass and less moss go hand in hand; whilst the active ingredient in this product for killing moss is the 17% iron sulphate content, improving grass health is another way to keep moss at bay. Healthy lawns don’t permit as much moss growth, plus stronger lawns will be able to fill in holes left by moss quicker.

The 2% nitrogen in this Moss Killer and Lawn Tonic encourages new growth, which will help grass fill in the bare patches where the moss used to be. Unfortunately, sometimes you only learn how much moss was really hiding in the lawn when a moss killer gets rid of it all – and this can result in a sad and patchy-looking garden. With this particular product, the lawn tends to look greener within days, quickly helping combat the damage caused by moss.

Sold as a 2.5 L bottle, this moss killer is diluted with water and sprayed onto the garden. Compared to granular or powder products this is a much cleaner application, which can also result in a more even coverage. The product dissipates through the water, leaving no highly-concentrated areas, so when applied with either a sprayer or a watering can there’s less chance of it scorching the grass.

Plus, given that one bottle should be sufficient to cover around 166 m² of lawn, economically speaking it’s quite fairly priced.

One thing to note: care needs to be taken with this product around any paving or concrete, as contact with these surfaces can cause staining that is hard to remove. It’s best to steer well clear of patios, leaving a margin when treating any grass nearby, just in case.

This is the best moss killer if you want a liquid product. It’s easy to apply and effectively combats moss growth whilst improving the health of the lawn. When it comes to lawn moss killers, this is a combination worth looking out for.

Runner Up
  • The built-in spreader makes applying product to smaller areas very easy
  • Good visible results after just one application
  • Improves lawn thickness and leads to a healthier lawn

  • The built-in spreader is best suited to use on smaller lawns; it isn’t quite as effective when it comes to larger applications, and some people have purchased their own spreader separately
  • Needs a lot of watering - either wait for rainfall or water for a few days following application
  • Can scorch your lawn although it should recover very quickly

Successfully spreading products over the lawn without the right tools can be a difficult task, especially when it’s important to get an even application. Whilst it’s true that buying a granule spreader can help make spreading moss killer easier, it does sometimes seem like a waste of money to buy a tool you might only use twice a year.

Fortunately, the manufacturers at Scotts Miracle-Gro have designed their Evergreen Lawn Food, Weed and Moss Killer to have a built-in spreader, making it easier to achieve an even application without any additional purchases. It’s one of the best moss killers if you want a product that’s easy to apply.

Of course, easy application means nothing if the product is a flop, but luckily this 4-in-1 product ticks several boxes in terms of performance as well.

Not only does it efficiently kill off moss, fighting it effectively even if there is a thick blanket on the lawn, it’s also strong enough to get rid of larger, stronger weeds like dandelions and clovers. If weeds and moss are starting to take over the garden, this is a strong challenger in the fight against them – generally they start to die in 3 – 5 weeks after treatment.

In some cases, a second application might be required to catch any persevering weeds, but seeing as one container holds enough product to cover an area of roughly 100 m², there should be enough for several subsequent applications.

The granules do need to be kept very dry within the container, as any moisture can cause them to stick together which causes problems using the spreader. Ensuring adequate storage, particularly keeping the product out of damp areas over winter, can help preserve it for future use. It can be used any time from April to September, and helps protect grass from drought too.

Thanks to the ‘WaterSmart’ formula, this moss killer also helps the soil and grass absorb water and nutrients more effectively. As a result, grass is more resistant to heat and drought, staying resilient and healthy which deters moss growth.

Overall, thanks to the built-in spreader, this is the best moss killer if you want something that’s easy and fuss-free to apply. It’s worth nothing that it’s most efficient on smaller lawns due to the size of the spreader – it won’t throw the moss killer out across larger areas.

Also Good
  • Very easy to apply with no need to rake lawn after application
  • Makes your lawn healthier and greener within a couple of weeks
  • Will not stain decking or slabs unlike some other moss killers on the market

  • Visible results don’t come as quickly as other products on the market
  • Will not work if the soil temperature is too low. Your soil should be 10 degrees or above so you’ll need to check this before application, especially if it’s early in the growing season

If the idea of raking up dead moss, after already spending time laboriously spreading moss-killing granules, doesn’t fill you with joy, the Miracle-Gro EverGreen Moss Remover Lawn Food is the best moss killer for getting this job done fast. In fact, there’s generally very little raking required after treatment, thanks to its specially-designed formula.

This product contains naturally occurring bacteria that ‘eats’ through dead moss, clearing it from the lawn when other lawn moss killers would require it to be painstakingly raked up.

As well as tackling moss, the formula contains a fertilising mix of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK 4-15-9) that continues to feed the lawn for up to three months after treatment. This helps prevent moss from coming back. Given that moss tends to favour areas where grass isn’t thriving, having a healthy lawn that has continuously benefitted from these slow-release nutrients works to deter moss growth.

In particular, the additional high-magnesium content of this Miracle-Gro Moss Remover specifically helps promote the production of chlorophyll, as well as aiding seed germination, resulting in grass that is visibly greener after about seven days. Just the ticket after fighting a long battle with moss!

Whilst other lawn moss killers may stain concrete and patios, these moss killer granules don’t cause this problem. It’s also safe for pets and children to get back onto the grass as soon as the granules have been watered in – this can either be done naturally, by waiting for rain, or by spraying or watering the area.

When it comes to value, one bag contains enough product to cover an area of 200 m². This does work out slightly more expensive than some moss killers for lawns, but the main selling point of this Miracle-Gro EverGreen Moss Remover Lawn Food is the time saved from not having to rake the whole lawn after use.

For lawns that need a full overhaul, be they overrun with moss, or weeds, or both, the A1 Lawn: Feed, Weed & Moss Killer is a no-nonsense product that will fight off moss whilst simultaneously putting weeds in their place. It’s one of the best high-strength moss killers for an all-round treatment on rebellious lawns. Plus, whilst combatting the not-so-pretty moss, it also finds time to green-up the grass and improve lawn health.

Specially formulated to accelerate grass root development, leading to a faster-growing, stronger lawn, this Lawn Feed, Weed & Moss Killer also has an iron content of 8.0% to kill off moss, and contains three separate weed killers.

‘Dicamba’, ‘2,4-D’ and ‘Mecoprop-P’ might not mean much initially, but these are three herbicides which have been included in this A1 Lawn product due to their specific properties. Mecoprop-P, for example, kills already-established broadleaf weeds (read: dandelions, clovers, etc.) whilst Dicamba will also tackle emerging weeds to stop them from getting comfortable in the lawn.

Moss visibly shrinks within a few weeks, and weeds also retreat, leaving a lawn that often starts to look greener and clearer within seven days. Dead moss can then be raked up and disposed of.

Applying this lawn moss killer needs to be done carefully, as leaving too high a concentration in one area can lead to scorching. 10 kg of product is enough to cover 250 m², so it’s best to apply sparingly with a spreader to get the best results and the best value for money.

Compared to some similar products, this moss killer does have quite a strong smell – something to be aware of whilst also making sure that children and pets don’t enter onto the lawn until all the granules are fully dissolved. This generally takes around 48 hours as long as there has been a lot of rainfall. Granules can also be watered in by frequently using a sprayer or hose until they are dissolved.

If your lawn is overrun by weeds as well as moss, this is the best lawn moss killer. Not only does it contain iron sulphate to kill moss, but also a selection of herbicides to combat weeds. Plus, there’s some fertiliser in there as well to aid lawn health.

Grass can face some really harsh environments over the winter, with moss running riot thanks to the cool, damp conditions. Whilst a lot of moss killers contain ingredients that are best suited to use in spring/summer, it’s useful to have something on hand that can take care of lawn health during the colder months.

The Proctors Autumn and Winter Lawn Feed Moss Killer is a great product to deploy in the autumn/winter to keep everything ticking over, keeping moss at bay whilst creating healthy foundations for the summer. It’s the best moss killer to use in autumn and winter.

It contains a much lower nitrogen content than many other moss killers/lawn feeds, which avoids an undesirable growth spurt for grass over winter. Instead, the root systems are fortified, resulting in stronger grass that is less likely to let moss overpower it.

On top of this, the granulated formula contains iron which kills off moss, stopping it from taking over whilst the weather forces you to spend more time inside. It can be applied every six weeks, with this 20 kg bag containing enough product to cover an area of 571 m².

The Proctors Lawn Feed Moss Killer achieves better coverage than other products sold in a similarly-sized container; this is because it is made up of ‘micro-granules’ that are more compact than standard granules. The product goes further, and these granules are also less likely to clog in a spreader than those of traditional size.

That said, if applying every six weeks during the winter months, you may find that you go through this moss killer quicker than you might with an equivalent product in the summer.

Overall, if you’re looking for a lawn moss killer that can be applied in autumn and winter this is an excellent option to consider. It won’t cause an unwanted growth spurt in grass, but it will control moss and strengthen grass roots.

If you’re after an effective product that won’t need to be applied too many times, the Westland Aftercut Lawn Feed, Weed & Moss Killer works to eliminate moss and weeds whilst helping with grass growth. It only needs to be applied twice a year, once in the spring and once towards the end of summer, improving the appearance and health of the lawn without being too time consuming. For this reason, it’s the best lawn moss killer if you want a low-maintenance option.

Even if grass seems to be on its last legs, when you might be thinking that returfing is the only viable option, spreading this granulated formula over the ground can see improvements in as little as seven days. It keeps working over an extended period too, so whilst results may not be delivered immediately, grass steadily becomes greener and thicker in the following weeks after application.

With a few different ingredients at work, the ferrous sulphate attacks moss on the lawn, causing it to shrivel and die, whilst the various active weed killers such as Mecroprop-P and Dicamba fight against large established weeds like dandelions and ribwort plantain. The nitrogen/phosphate/potassium content is 10-2-2; the high nitrogen levels focus on improving the grass’ root system and strength which, in turn, deters moss from returning.

It’s best to use a spreader to ensure even coverage of this Feed, Weed & Moss Killer, and doing so can also help achieve the stipulated coverage of 500 m². There’s enough product in the 17 kg bag to cover a medium to large garden, as long as it is spread accurately.

Thoroughly watering these granules in is a must. This either means applying just before a lot of heavy rain is forecast, or putting in the work to water the lawn for several days after application. Pets and children should be kept off the lawn until the granules are completely dissolved.

A final note on application: planning a route to spread these granules in the garden can help to ensure accurate coverage, they can be difficult to see once on the ground, and this can result in the temptation to cover the same patch twice, which should be avoided.

  • Chemical-free so a good option for those with children and pets
  • Very easy to spread across small areas
  • Most users only needed to apply once, with results appearing in 6 weeks

  • Slower to produce results than other fertilisers and moss killers on the market.
  • Although it states pet and child safe, they still should not enter treated area until the product has been watered in and dried fully, which is no different to many other chemical moss killers
  • Not suitable for lawns less than 6 months old

Lawn Gold Lawn Fertilizer & Moss Remover is the best lawn moss killer if you want a chemical-free product with organically-based ingredients. It works to create an environment that will successfully deter moss, containing calcium which is used to reduce soil acidity. Moss thrives in acidic ground, so combatting its growth by improving the composition of the soil is an excellent, long-term solution.

Alongside its calcium content, this Lawn Gold product has an NPK value of 6-1-30. The particularly high amount of potassium helps grass better absorb water and nutrients from the soil, improving the health of existing grass.

In periods of heavy rainfall, which, let’s be honest, aren’t uncommon here in the UK, potassium can be washed out of the soil. As a result, products like this one, which focus on adding it back in, are well suited to our showery climate.

Unlike a lot of moss removers featured on this list, this is not a weed killer. It can help deter weeds, by generally encouraging the healthy growth of grass, but it does not contain chemicals to specifically fight them. This is the reason it is referred to as an organic product, as it is chemical free with organically-based ingredients. For many gardeners, this may add to its appeal, as it should not be as harmful to the environment as some chemical products.

The 4 kg box covers between 40 – 100 m² depending on application; it can be applied in a more concentrated way if the lawn is in very bad condition, or more sparingly on a standard lawn. In terms of price, the smaller coverage of this box makes it slightly less value for money than some other products featured here, but it does come with the reassurance of improving lawn health without using harsh chemicals.

However, just because there are no chemicals in this product, it doesn’t change the application procedure shared by many other granular moss killers and lawn feeds: children and pets should be kept off the lawn until it has been fully watered in, and grazing animals (such as rabbits) should not be allowed onto the area for at least four weeks.

Clive's Smart Buying Tips

  1. Moss killers come either as a concentrated liquid, soluble powder or solid granules. Choose liquid moss killer or soluble powder if you want something easy to apply. It can be applied using a watering can with a rose attachment, meaning you can use equipment you already have. Alternatively, you could use a garden sprayer over a large area.
  2. I recommend liquid-form moss killer if you’re worried about grass burn. Because the solution is diluted, there’s less danger of patchy application. Patchy application can lead to areas of product concentration (which ultimately burns grass!).
  3. However, if you already have a spreader for granulated fertiliser, applying a granular moss killer will be straightforward. Plus, granulated moss killer is a good choice for those on a budget – it’s typically cheaper than liquid products.
  4. Diluted moss killers often show visible results within one to two days. Although, they shouldn’t be applied if rain is forecast as they may wash away and become less effective. Granular moss killers generally take effect in around two weeks. They slowly release their active ingredient so bad weather shouldn’t reduce their effectiveness.
  5. One final tip: a combination moss killer and lawn feed is also worth looking out for, as this can help prevent bare patches after the moss has died off.

How to Choose The Best Moss Killer

Moss is a common problem in gardens for a variety of reasons. It can give the lawn an uneven colour and feel spongy to walk on.

Moss often occurs when there is sparse grass cover, on compacted or waterlogged soil, in shady areas, or on soil that is lacking in nutrients or too acidic.

Moss killers are an easy and effective way to rid your lawn of that ugly moss. The moss will die quickly after treatment and can then be raked or scarified out.

READ NEXT: The Best Lawn Scarifiers to Remove Moss and Thatch

So, if you want to start using moss killer, read these helpful tips to help you make an informed purchase:

The Benefits of Using Moss Killer

If allowed to get out of control, moss can overrun your lawn. It often outcompetes grass and will steal valuable water and nutrients away. As a result, moss will spread, killing off your grass.

A lot of moss on the lawn will look patchy and spongy, it won’t give you the smooth, well-groomed lawn that you’re after.

Using a moss killer will stop this spread, and the majority of them will actually fertilise your lawn and help improve its appearance.

Moss requires a moist environment to thrive; unlike most other plants, it doesn’t have roots to transport water and nutrients. The best way to treat moss is to dry it out completely, and this is how a moss killer works. Most moss killers contain iron, which can dry out the plant over time.

The best moss killer products will also improve the health of your lawn. If you have a lot of moss you may need to repeat the application. Most moss killers contain iron sulphate which kills the moss as well as greening up the lawn. At lower concentrations, these products can be used as a lawn tonic.

What’s Best – Liquid or Granular Form?

Both liquid and granular form moss killers are very effective.

One factor that may affect whether you choose one or the other is the type of spreader you have available.

If you already have a granule fertiliser spreader, you may be more comfortable with granular moss killer. Equally, if you normally use a liquid sprayer when fertilising, or have a watering can with a fine-holed rose, it might suit you better to use liquid moss killer.

Pros of Liquid Moss Killer

  • If applied properly, gives very even coverage
  • Easily and quickly absorbed
  • Easy to apply

Cons of Liquid Moss Killer

  • May not last as long in storage as granules
  • Shouldn’t be used before rainy weather

Pros of Granular Moss Killer

  • Can be ‘slow release’ – lasts longer and may be more effective
  • May be cheaper than liquid products

Cons of Granular Moss Killer

  • May burn the grass if not carefully and evenly applied
  • Can be more difficult to apply evenly

Moss Killer With or Without Lawn Feed?

All of the moss killers featured in these reviews also advertise themselves as lawn feed. Personally, I think it’s best to buy a moss killer combined with lawn feed because when moss dies off it can leave sparse patches. If the lawn is treated at the same time, it won’t take long for the grass to grow and fill in these areas.

However, if your lawn has been really overrun by moss, you might want to consider buying a specified moss killer. This will be the best way to really tackle a carpet of thick moss.

Moss Killer FAQs

Use a high-quality moss killer.

Moss relies on moisture to stay alive, so the best way to eliminate it is to dry it out completely. Many traditional methods such as power washing and bleaching won’t get rid of it for good.

Follow the instructions of your moss killer carefully, and check exactly where your moss killer can be used. If your first application doesn’t successfully eliminate the moss, you may need to treat the area more than once.

Most moss killers will deliver results within anywhere between a few hours and a couple of weeks, depending on the product you use.

Ideal times to apply moss killers are in spring or autumn.

If applying in spring, do this as soon as the weather warms and the grass begins to grow, ideally before the likelihood of sporing in April. If you want to apply the treatment in autumn, wait until the dry weather is over and the conditions are wetter, September is usually about right.

Wait until the moss is dead and black before raking, otherwise, you can spread pieces of live moss and spores over to another area of your lawn.

It’s best to wait a few weeks before applying a second application of moss killer, especially if it contains iron sulphate as an overdose of this can scorch the grass.

It is best to apply these products over the whole lawn as they increase the acidity of the soil and this can affect the colour of the lawn. Part applications could result in a variable colour in your grass and a patchy and uneven effect.

  • Improve drainage and aerate the lawn – if your lawn has a tendency to become waterlogged or compacted this will encourage moss.
  • Always feed your lawn in autumn to help prevent moss taking over in the damp winter months. Regular feeding keeps your grass in tip-top condition making it harder for moss to find a way in.
  • Avoid cutting your grass too short as this can damage it and allow moss to get a foothold.

Iron sulphate is safe to use as long as you follow the guidance on the pack carefully. You should, in general, keep pets and children off the area for 24 hours after use. If you want to use moss killer on patios or paths then test it on a small inconspicuous area as the product can stain. Wear gloves and protect the areas where you mix the product to prevent staining and remember to check your shoes before going indoors as the products can stain floors and carpets.
