Things to Know Before Buying an Outdoor Broom

An outdoor broom is a must-have for anyone who prides themselves on a neat and tidy outdoor space. Whether it’s a patio, driveway or balcony, sweeping up leaves, dirt and debris will have you feeling great about your outdoor space!

Not sure what to look for when it comes to the best outdoor broom? The following tips will help you to make the right decision.

Broom Handle Length and Material

The handle of your outdoor broom is very important. Not only does it need to be the right length to allow you to sweep without stooping, it also needs to be comfortable to hold, and sturdy!

The brooms I’ve recommended come with different lengths of handle, but if you’re particularly concerned about the handle length, opt for the Charles Bentley National Trust Garden Broom. This broom has a fully adjustable handle, so can be altered until it’s the perfect height for you. Ideally, the handle should reach just above your chin when placed straight upright.

Another consideration is the handle material. Plastic is by far the cheapest material, and it’s also very lightweight. Plastic is also weather-proof and won’t rust, but it’s not the most sturdy due to its lighter weight.

Wood and metal are strong and weighty. They are both more durable than plastic, but they lack the weather resistance. Wood can rot over time, and metal may begin to rust, but provided you store your broom in a dry spot, this shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

Fibreglass is the final option for the handle material. This is lightweight yet extremely strong. In fact, the only downside is that it’s expensive!

Selecting the Right Broom Head

The width and shape of the broom head is also important. If you have a large balcony or patio, it’s worth opting for a wide brush head. These will make it easy to clear a wider area in a shorter space of time, although wider brush heads are difficult to get into smaller spaces or around obstacles.

For smaller areas such as pathways between flower beds or small balconies, a narrower brush head will be easier to use.

The head and handle are usually joined together at the base of the handle. Screw in models tend to last a lot longer, and are better suited for heavy duty sweeping.

Bristle Material and Stiffness

The bristles can make a huge difference when it comes to how easy your broom is to use. Most are made from synthetic fibres and are either soft or stiff. Stiff bristles are best for heavy duty sweeping and they can be used to remove stubborn bits of debris.

For a quick surface sweep and lighter tasks, softer bristles tend to be best. While very stiff bristles can damage delicate surfaces, soft bristles will not.

Outdoor Broom FAQ

Should you push or pull a broom?

The models I have recommended are push brooms, which means they are easiest to use when pushed away from you. To effectively use a push broom, push it forward in short, quick strokes to sweep the debris into a neat pile.

How do you hold a broom when sweeping?

To hold a broom properly, place your dominant hand about a quarter of the way down the length of the handle. Hold the top of the broom with your weaker hand. When using the broom, your arms should be moving, with your back straight and stable.
