The UK's bestFloor Fans2022 Review

What To Look For in a Floor Fans

It’s only when we’re hit by a sudden three-week heatwave that we realise how poorly-equipped the average UK home is for dealing with hot weather. Whilst homes in the Mediterranean often have air-conditioning as standard, us Brits are much more prepared for cold weather than hot. Although great in the winter, the insulation in our houses can make temperatures almost unbearable come summertime.

A floor fan is a great option for larger rooms that get uncomfortably warm. Floor fans are often more powerful than traditional desk fans, and are ideal for larger areas such as bedrooms, garages, offices and even home gyms.

Finding the best floor fan is about getting a good balance between budget, power and manoeuvrability. I’ve chosen the Pro Breeze Chrome Floor Fan as my top recommendation. This ultra-powerful, heavy-duty fan keeps air circulating around large areas to maintain a lower temperature. For more details about this floor fan, plus other great alternatives, see the reviews below.

Pro Breeze Chrome Floor Fan Review

If you’re after a floor fan for large spaces, the Pro Breeze Chrome Floor Fan is powerful, robust and (most importantly!) great for keeping areas cool. Measuring 50 cm in diameter across, with a 120 W motor, this floor fan creates a strong and powerful cooling breeze.

Not only is it great for daily use in specific rooms such as gyms, living rooms and offices, but it can also help air circulate better around the whole lower or upper levels of a home.

It’s heavy duty, with a metal chrome head and stainless-steel blades. The fan head can be freely moved and tilted, pointing towards the floor or ceiling. This allows the air to circulate better, or makes it possible to direct the output in a specific direction. Overall, the air output is exceptionally strong and there are three air-flow speeds.

The fan speed can be set at high, medium or low, with the highest option required for use in larger areas.  The speed controls are easy to access on the back, and the anti slip feet ensure this fan is stable on all surfaces.

The only real negative to this fan is that it’s relatively noisy. This is the case on all of the speed settings, as opposed to just the highest, and it may be too loud for some people to sleep through. For this reason, it might not be a suitable choice for bedrooms, but it’s still one of the best floor fans overall for keeping the house cool – it’s simple yet powerful which is a great combination.

Pros

  • Very powerful on full power - suitable for cooling upper/lower levels of house
  • Makes a noticeable difference to the temperature of the room(s)
  • Very straightforward assembly takes approximately 5 minutes
  • Fan head is adjustable so you can direct the airflow if you don’t want it pointing straight at you
  • Suitable for large rooms thanks to the 50 cm fan head

Cons

  • Relatively noisy even on the low settings so may not be suitable for bedrooms
  • Does not oscillate, although it can be tilted up and down
  • Very large 50 cm diameter may take up too much space in smaller rooms

Oypla Electricial Chrome Floor Fan Review

One of the smaller fans on this list, the Oypla Electrical Chrome Floor Fan measures 30 cm across and has a 50 W motor. It’s well suited to smaller spaces, and the slowest speed is quiet enough not to be too disruptive.

One of the best things about this fan is the overall quality of its construction. It’s made from chrome and has a well-balanced base. The design is modern, and relatively sleek – coming with predominantly metal components. The feet, buttons, control box and tension screws are made from plastic which keeps the weight down. In fact, it’s very lightweight at just 3.5 kg, and there’s a handle on the back too, so it’s easy to move from room to room.

The cage doesn’t rotate at all, but it can tilt towards the ceiling or floor to help circulate air. Unfortunately, the power cable is quite short at 1.5 m, so in certain cases you may find it’s necessary to use an extension cord as well.

This fan has 3 speed settings so you can adjust the power to suit the temperature of the room. Even the first speed is pretty powerful, but it’s sufficiently quiet for most people to sleep through. Therefore, this setting is suitable for bedrooms or offices. The top speed is for those sweltering days where you’re looking to cool off quickly! Unfortunately, the medium and highest speeds are fairly loud, and would likely disturb all but the easiest of sleepers.

Like most floor fans, this model is relatively simple in terms of features. There’s no timer or oscillation, but it strikes a good balance between design and power. Due to its size, it can be placed either on the floor or a table if needed, and it’s one of the best floor fans for smaller rooms. It may be too small for larger rooms, but it will provide a lot of cooling air to anyone nearby.

Pros

  • Handle on the back means it can be easily transported from room to room
  • Even the lowest speed is fairly strong
  • Lowest setting is relatively quiet and should be suitable for bedrooms and offices
  • 3 speed settings, with the highest setting being very powerful

Cons

  • On the highest speed, this fan is a little noisy
  • Not much differentiation between low and medium fan speed
  • Fan head doesn’t oscillate or tilt forwards, although it can be tilted backwards
  • 1.5 m cord may be too short for some room layouts and require an extension cable

XPower P-80A Floor Fan Review

The XPower P-80A Floor Fan may not look like a traditional floor fan, but it performs just as well as others on the market (whilst offering a little more visual interest!). It’s compact, measuring just 29 x 23.6 x 31 cm, and weighs 3.58 kg, meaning it’s easy to move from room to room using the integrated, moulded handle.

This little fan has a multipurpose design that allows it to be used at 4 different angles. It can be placed level on the floor, or rotated so that the air output is situated at a 20°, 45° or 90° angle from the floor, sending a cooling air stream in the desired direction. It’s a robust and durable unit overall, with moulded plastic covering the outside.

There’s a 115 W motor which produces an airflow of 350 cubic feet per minute and it’s very powerful despite the small size. There are three speed settings to choose from, and the jet of air that it produces is a strong blast. It’s more of a concentrated flow of air compared to traditional fans, but this makes it one of the best floor fans for focusing air in a specific direction – useful when exercising or watching tv in hot weather. In fact, it’s a particular favourite amongst static-bike enthusiasts.

If you want to use more than one of these fans, the unit has a built-in power unit meaning that they can be ‘daisy-chained’ together. This daisy chain potential is useful for large rooms and spaces.

It also has an impressive cord length, which is useful whether using just one unit or connecting several together. Whilst most floor fans have a power cable of 1.5 or 2 m at best, this fan has a 3 m cord so there’s a lot more flexibility on where it can be positioned.

Pros

  • Runs relatively quietly on the low setting so perfect for large offices
  • Extremely powerful - suitable for home gyms or garages
  • Produces a fast stream of air
  • Can draw air from open windows/doors to help with circulation
  • Concentrated air jet is a great choice for anyone using an indoor exercise bike

Cons

  • Medium and high settings may be too loud for working/sleeping

Belaco Store Metal Floor Fan Review

The Belaco Store Metal Floor Fan is a medium-duty fan, suitable for small/medium offices, home gyms and garages. This fan measures 30 cm across, although a 45 cm version is also available. It produces 80 W of power, which is less than some of the fans featured here, but still more than enough for cooling the house during hot days at home!

With a sturdy metal construction, this fan is designed for long-term use. The blades are made from metal and protected by a strong metal grill. The chrome finish ensures this fan is not an eyesore and looks good in any style of room.

The Belaco fan has three speed settings and it’s generally pretty quiet on the first two speed settings; however, it still can’t be described as silent. Given the price, it offers good value for money, but if you want a really quiet fan you may need to opt for a specifically ‘low decibel’ model.

There are four buttons along the top for controlling the speed which are easy to access, and the rubber feet ensure the fan doesn’t slip or slide around. Also, thanks to the rubber feet it shouldn’t damage wooden floors or surfaces.

With an angle that can be adjusted vertically through 120°, you can position the stream of air exactly where you need it. However, if you need a little extra height, this fan can be placed on a table or desk, as it’s very low vibration. On that note, it’s also very quiet, although the highest setting may still be a little too noisy if you’re trying to sleep.

Overall, this fan is one of the best floor fans if you’re after a budget model that still packs plenty of punch. Whilst the features are relatively simple (there’s no oscillation or timer for instance), the 80 W output is powerful enough to cool small/medium rooms for a very reasonable price.

Pros

  • Good size for keeping small/medium rooms small, including offices with lots of electronic equipment
  • Limited vibration so can also be placed on a table if needed
  • Runs relatively quietly on lower speeds
  • Good value for money for the power provided

Cons

  • Generally quiet, but people who need silence to work may find the noise distracting
  • Over time, some customers have found that the noise of the fan increases

Schallen Chrome Floor Fan Review

The Schallen Chrome Floor Fan is another fan that makes up for its simple features by producing an impressive amount of cooling air. It’s available as either a 40 cm or 45 cm model, making it similar in size to the Belaco Floor Fan, although it has marginally less motor power at 70 W.

Nevertheless, its air output is still strong enough to cool different rooms in the house and significantly improve air circulation during hot weather. The stylish chrome finish ensures it looks good in most homes and offices.

Like other models that I’ve recommended, this fan has three speed settings. Even the lowest setting is strong enough to cool medium-size rooms, whilst the middle and highest settings are perfect for home gyms, offices and large living rooms.

As is often the case with this style of fan, it isn’t silent to use; however, it isn’t horrendously disruptive either, especially on the lowest setting. The sound of the motor may be a little loud for those who like to work in silence, but, for areas such as home gyms or garages, where noise isn’t a problem, this fan is a great option.

Overall, the unit has a durable build, with metal blades and quality housing. The rubber feet ensure it’s stable on any surface, and it arrives fully assembled. The head can be tilted 120° so you can angle the airflow at any height, although it’s worth noting that there’s no oscillation feature. To point the airflow to a different area, this fan will need to be placed in a different spot, although this is easy thanks to the integrated carry handle.

Given its price and power capacity, this is one of the best floor fans in terms of value for money. It is inexpensive yet powerful and well made, and it works as you would hope..

Pros

  • Very powerful even on the lowest level
  • Available in 2 sizes with the 18” size perfect for large rooms
  • Adjustable 120 degree head tilt
  • Arrives fully assembled and ready to use
  • Durable and high quality metal build

Cons

  • Run quite loudly even on the lowest setting
  • Cord may be too short for some users at just 1.5 m
  • No extra features such as oscillation or a timer setting

How to Choose the Best Floor Fan

Let’s face it, British homes simply aren’t built for the heat. Getting cool air to circulate around living rooms, offices and bedrooms can be very difficult when thermometers start reading upwards of 25°C.

Whether you’re looking to cool a large living room, garage, home gym or office, a floor fan is worth considering. Unlike pedestal fans, these provide air circulation at floor level, encouraging air to circulate around the whole space.

Floor fans also benefit from their portability. Unlike ceiling fans, which are permanent installations, floor fans can simply be moved from room to room. You don’t need a whole lot of space; they can simply be placed in a corner and left to do their job.

Floor fans are available in a range of sizes and styles. Check out the following tips to help you make an informed choice.

Floor Fan Shape / Style

There’s a surprising amount of variation in the world of floor fans, although traditional, bladed models are the most common. This is for good reason as well – they’re very effective, good value for money and tend to be long lasting.

However, there are other options available, which can be more useful for certain contexts. For example, if you have young children or pets, you may not want a traditional fan with blades at ground level. But that doesn’t mean you have to desert the idea of a floor fan altogether. Instead, you’ll need to look for a fan with a more concealed mechanism, instead of a wire cage.

There are also floor fans on the market that direct a more concentrated stream of air; these can be useful in many different situations, but can be particularly useful for home gyms and people working out on static equipment. The XPower P-80A Floor Fan is a good example of this different style of floor fan.

Floor fans are also available in a range of sizes. The smaller options measure around 25-30 cm in diameter, and larger options up to 50 cm are readily available. Larger fans can be bulky, so they won’t be suitable to place in smaller rooms; however, they can encourage air to circulate around the whole lower/upper level of a house instead of just one room.

Noise Level

As you’ll have learned from reading these reviews, floor fans are rarely silent. They are designed primarily for power, and this does come at a cost. If a quiet-running fan is your priority, you might benefit from checking out our page dedicated to quiet units.

The larger floor fans are likely to be fairly noisy, but they aren’t really designed for bedrooms. Best for home gyms, garages, or very hot areas such as terraces, ideally they’ll be used in areas where you won’t really notice the noise output.

That said, the noise level does vary between brands. Some fans are quiet enough to have in an office or bedroom on the lowest setting, but not the higher ones. If the fan doesn’t have a decibel rating, it can help to check out customer reviews for an idea of how loud (or not) the fan is.

Adjustable Settings

Floor fans tend to be very simple, so you’re unlikely to see many adjustable settings like oscillation, a timer or sleep mode.

The fans I’ve recommended all have 3 speed settings which are easy to switch between. A timer is a useful feature but not a necessity. If you set your fan running as you’re going to sleep, the timer function will turn it off after a couple of hours. This can help save electricity. While a nice feature to have, it’s only really helpful if you’re going to be using your fan in your bedroom and are worried about temperatures dropping in the middle of the night.

Useful Features

Other useful features to have include a remote control which will allow you to control the fan from a distance. These are great if you want to adjust the settings from your bed, but they aren’t standard with floor fans.

An adjustable, tilting fan head is another good feature to look for. Pointing the fan at the floor or ceiling can encourage air to circulate in a certain way. You can direct the flow towards or away from you as desired.

Floor fans rarely oscillate, so will need to be manually repositioned if you want to adjust the horizontal direction.

Floor Fan FAQs

Can you leave a floor fan on all day?

Floor fans don’t generally have timer functions, so it can be tempting to leave a floor fan on all day. Provided your fan is well made and in good condition, you should be able to leave it on for long periods without any problems.

However, it’s best to turn fans off when they’re unsupervised. Just in case. Also, if your fan looks worn out or is rattling slightly, do not leave it on for long periods of time. If you notice the motor getting hot, you should also turn the fan off.

Leaving a fan on all day while you are out is actually not energy efficient. Fans don’t technically cool the room, so there won’t be many benefits from leaving one on. They can stop it from getting stuffy, but putting the fan on for 30 minutes once you’ve returned to the room will also have the same effect.

Therefore, I recommend only leaving fans on if you are in the house and benefitting from the power they’re using. Otherwise you’ll be wasting energy unnecessarily.

What is the benefit of a floor fan?

Floor fans tend to be more powerful than traditional pedestal or tower fans, and the features are a lot simpler. If you’ve got a lot of space, for example a large garage, decking or living room, a floor fan can be a better option.
