Stanley Maxsteel Multi Angle Table Vice Review

Stanley are a household name in the professional trades and DIY sectors, and produce tough and innovative tools. The Stanley Maxsteel Multi Angle Vice is simply one of the best table vice clamps on the market.

The ball-joint pivot and swivel systems allow for almost infinite adjustment of the workpiece, so you can saw, drill or file from any angle. It’s a game-changer for anyone who regularly works with small workpieces. The vice tool’s removable jaw pads are great when you want to protect the workpiece from scratches.

Our favourite feature on the Stanley vice is the C-clamp attachment system. It’s wide enough to attach the vice to a workbench, timber, or even a pipe, meaning you can work on small pieces anywhere at home or on the job site.

Silverline VC17 70mm Pivoting Multi-Angle Vice Review

This Silverline VC17 pivoting vice is a lightweight and capable vice tool suitable for a range of uses, and can swivel through 360° and pivot by 45° to get to the right angle for the job at hand. The rubber jaw pads mean you can hold softer items without marking them, but can also be removed to hold more rigid items securely.

We really liked the rubber pads attached to the table mount though. As a hobby vice, it’s likely that you want to attach it to a kitchen table and these clever pads mean they won’t mark the surface anywhere. This feature makes the vice one of the best tabletop vices on the UK market.

Irwin Record V75B 3 Inch Table Vice Review

Anyone who has used a set of clamps or vices knows the brand Irwin Record. Famous for their build quality, you won’t be disappointed with their solid V75B Table Vice. If you need to solidly clamp a workpiece on the go, the cast iron body on this Irwin Record vice is unbeatable.

It’s one of the best table clamp vices for jewellery makers because it includes a useful anvil section on the back side. This is invaluable when working with metals, and when you need to beat something repeatedly without damaging the work surface.

Uniquely on this Irwin Record vice there’s also a small section underneath the jaws for clamping rods securely.

Hi-Spec 60mm Suction Vacuum Table Vice with 360° Swivelling Head Review

Hi-Spec isn’t messing around with this hobby vice. You might not believe that a suction pad would hold a vice strongly enough for working on, but it’s a great system when the workbench is flat and there is nowhere else to clamp to.

With dual alignment pins keeping the jaws parallel to each other, the Hi-Spec Vacuum Table vice is accurate as well as strong. Featuring a ball-joint system, it was easy to pivot and swivel the table vice around to our desired position.

When you need to work on a small item and don’t have a tabletop to clamp to, this is the best tabletop vice on our list by far. We loved the grippy removable jaw pads, and think they’ll last for a long time.

Silverline 632607 50mm Bench Vice with Swivelling Base Review

This Silverline 632607 Swivelling Vice is tough enough for performing light metal jobs with its handy little anvil, even though it is also the smallest vice on this list.

The jaws have grip lines machined into them to help hold on to a variety of workpieces, and the cast iron body should stand the test of time for such a small vice. We really like the steel hardware; the small vice tool was easy to clamp onto a table or workbench and felt very solid for its size.

Bench Vice Buyer’s Guide

Holding objects securely is the secret to accurate and safe work. When you hold something down with your hand and attempt to saw or file it, you appreciate just how valuable a decent bench vice or table vice is. When it comes to the best bench vice though, it’s a trade-off between heavy usage and a versatile clamping arrangement.

Construction

Heavy bench vices like the Silverline 632607, are typically made of cast iron and heavy, so they can take a lot of punishment in the form of hard hammering or sawing. But tabletop vices like the Silverline VC17 pivoting vice or the Hi-Spec Vacuum Table Vice, tend to be lighter and are manufactured from alloy metals or aluminium.

Features to Look Out for

Really handy features like the ball-joint clamp seen on the Stanley Maxsteel Multi Angle Table Vice are innovative because you can hold your workpiece in virtually any position for accurate work. But don’t expect to be able to hit your workpiece with a club hammer and stay in the same position.

Pipe clamps and small anvils are useful features too. The Irwin Record V75b is the best mini table vice when you need to do light metalwork.

Usage

Bench vices are also excellent for a range of tabletop projects, like jewellery making, electronics, and hobby-craft. A ball-joint system would be the best table vice clamp for soldering, for example.

Conclusion

After looking closely at these bench vices, we think the best tabletop vice is the excellent Stanley Maxsteel Multi Angle Vice. This vice tool has the most versatile jaw setup that allows a full 360° swivel of the workpiece whilst remaining securely clamped to the benchtop.
