Makita DA331DZ 10.8 V Li-ion Angle Drill Review

The Makita DA331DZ 10.8 V Li-ion Angle Drill has a powerful four-pole motor with variable speeds and is also very compact.

This Makita right angle drill is lighter and has a smaller footprint than our top two choices but it does make accessing those trickier locations that much easier. The motor provides up to 800 rpm and has a variable speed trigger. The drill also has an electronic brake and an LED task light.

This angle drill has a capacity of 12 mm in wood and 10 mm in steel. It has a keyless chuck for easy bit installation. The drill comes bare and the smaller 10.8 V battery makes it lighter to use for longer periods. Overall dimensions are 6.5 x 30 x 10.5 cm.

This right angle drill is a good value purchase for smaller DIY tasks, especially where access is difficult, as it is powerful yet compact.

Angle Drill Buyer’s Guide

Angle drills are designed to drill holes and tighten screws in the same way as conventional pistol head drills, but the chuck is set at right angles to the main body of the drill. They also have very small heads so they can access awkward spaces, such as between joists and inside cupboards, with ease. Again for ease of use the majority of right angle drills are cordless.

Power

Not all 90 degree drills come with the same motor power. Heavy-duty work, such as drilling through joists, requires a motor with greater power that can generate higher rpm. These motors would generally be powered by 18 Volt Li-Ion batteries. Smaller and lighter right-angle drills run perfectly well on 12 Volt / 10.8 Volt batteries.

Construction

Angle drills range in quality and price. For heavy-duty tasks look for a top of the range angle drill with metal housing and gearing.

Features

Right angle drills usually feature a variable speed trigger which makes them easier to use and suitable for a wider range of drilling and screwdriving tasks.

A soft start function also makes operating the 90 degree drill more comfortable.

An electric brake makes an angled drill safer to use as it will stop spinning as soon as you release the trigger rather than gradually slowing down.
