The UK's bestCordless Drill Drivers2022 Review

In this guide we’ll look at the best cordless drill drivers for the UK market.
I’ve compared power, weight, features and cost
to give you my top recommendations.

What Is the Best Cordless Drill Driver?

In a rush? Here's my top choice...

Bosch Professional GSR 12 V-15 Cordless Drill Driver Set

The best drill driver for the UK market!

In the incredibly competitive lightweight tool market, the standout best drill driver in my opinion is the excellent Bosch Professional GSR 12V-15 FC. The high standards of one of the best tool companies in the world is plain to see- this drill is going to last you for years of good service. But what makes it the winner is the ground-breaking set of accessories. Being able to drill so close to an edge is something I’ve always struggled with, so it’s probably worth it for the offset Flexiclick system on its own, but the other attachments will come in handy as well.

Ryobi R18DD3-120S One Plus Cordless Drill Driver Kit Review

Japanese tool masters Ryobi know more than a thing or two about making the best drill driver, they’ve been in the game for close to 80 years and the R18DD3-120S is a great example of why people love their bright green tools.

The first thing that people notice about Ryobi’s tools is the ONE+ battery system- you can power any Ryobi power tool with just the one type of battery- whether it’s one of the best cordless drill drivers or a garden strimmer, you can save yourself a lot of time and money by buying “naked” tools and sharing the batteries.

You don’t have to worry about sharing the battery on this drill driver set though, it comes complete with a 2.0 Ah battery and fast charger. The drill itself has a comfortable ergonomic handle for extra grip, you get a full-size 13 mm keyless chuck, a work light and 24 torque settings to play around with.

On the technical side, the drill puts out an impressive 500 – 1800 rpm and a massive 50 Nm of torque for drilling holes up to 13 mm in steel and 38 mm in wood.

Bosch EasyDrill 1200 12V Cordless Drill Driver Review

The EasyDrill 1200 forms part of Bosch’s popular “green” line of DIY level power tools. This is a handy little lightweight drill driver that still packs a punch when you need it to.

A more stripped-down version of the Bosch Professional GSR kit, the EasyDrill 1200 has the same comfortable pistol grip and variable speed trigger that I like so much, 15 torque settings and a little work light that is always handy to have.

Taking advantage of a 1.5 Ah Lithium-Ion battery, you’ll be happy to know that it’s part of Bosch’s PowerForAll system, so if you’ve got any of their other 12V power tools laying around you can double up on your battery power.

And on the technical side, you get up to 450 – 1650 rpm, so it actually spins up quicker than the Professional GSR but puts out less torque at a not-too-shabby 20 Nm. Don’t expect to drill enormous holes all day long, but it’s still one of the best lightweight drill drivers you can get hold of.

Flybiz 21V Professional Cordless Drill Driver with 23 Accessories Review

Although I wasn’t familiar with the Flybiz brand, their 21V cordless drill has rave reviews and some features you’d expect to only see on the best drill drivers. For an inexpensive kit, you get a pair of 2.0 Ah batteries, a blow-moulded case and a comprehensive accessory kit as well.

I was pleasantly surprised with this drill driver, it’s comfortable to hold on to and not too heavy for a full-size power tool. You get a handy traffic light system that lets you know the charge level and 19 torque settings to choose from too.

I couldn’t find out the under-the-bonnet stats for this drill driver, but it feels like it should be more than enough for most day-to-day drilling and driving tasks. The accessory kit has everything you’ll need to get started including a flexible drive shaft and a handy set of drill and driver bits.

Mylek 18V Cordless Drill Driver with 1300 mAh Li-Ion Battery Review

Yorkshire-based Mylek produce an impressive range of products from power tools to metal detectors, and what I think is one of the best full-size drill drivers on our list. Don’t be put off by the budget price, it’s a powerful beast and a more than capable drill driver.

First off, it looks and feels like a more expensive drill driver. If you don’t look too closely you might think you were holding a £150 Makita tool, it’s not quite as refined but for the price you can’t really go wrong.

The 18V, 1.3 Ah battery is strong enough to push the motor up to 1500 rpm and creates a heavyweight 30 Nm of torque- more than enough for most DIY projects you might undertake at home.

The blow moulded case should keep everything together, and the one-hour charger means you’re not spending too much time waiting to recharge between jobs. They’ve even thrown in some drill and driver bits to get you started.

Hychika 12V Cordless Drill Driver with 1500mAh Li-Ion Battery Review

Firmly on our list of “budget tool brands to keep an eye out for”, Hychika make no-nonsense power tools for DIYers that want good performance without breaking the bank. They’ve put together one of the best budget drill driver kits out there, as far as I’m concerned.

The two selectable speeds and 21 different torque settings give you plenty of control over the power you’re putting into drilling and driving, and the fact that you can get 30 Nm of torque is impressive for an inexpensive drill driver.

The motor puts out 400 – 1500 rpm, and you get a decent accessory kit for tackling all those DIY jobs around the house. The belt clip is a nice added feature, you can attach it to either side of the drill if you’re left or right-handed.

Terratek 18V Cordless Drill Driver Kit Review

Part of Futura Direct, Doncaster’s Terratek make a decent range of budget power tools, including this handy 18V cordless drill driver. It’s a reliable no-frills tool that isn’t as refined as the best drill driver on the market, but for the price it’s an essential addition to any budding DIYers tool kit.

You get 16 different torque settings, and a pressure-sensitive trigger that controls the speed of the drill. You might only get up to 650 rpm on the sharp end, but you can still drill up to 20mm in wood and 8mm in steel. This is a lightweight and versatile drill that is great when you need to get into those tight spots.

The 10 mm keyless chuck feels solid enough, and you get reasonable set of accessories to get you started, but I would prefer a bit more grunt under the hood to tackle heavier screwdriving jobs.

Black & Decker BDCDC18 18V Cordless Drill Driver Review

Still one of the biggest names in DIY, BLACK+DECKER have produced some of the best drill drivers over the years, and the BDCDC18 is a lightweight and compact power tool that’s suited to most home DIY tasks.

You get a comfortable grip that helps to keep the drill driver well balanced in the hand, and a solid feeling keyless chuck that takes drill bits up to 10 mm in diameter. The work light sits on the front of the battery along with a handy double-ended screwdriver bit.

The reason why it’s so affordable is that you only get one drive speed with this model, and there’s no case to speak of. However, it does deliver a perfectly respectable drill speed of up to 650 rpm and there are still 10 torque /clutch settings (plus 1 reverse) to control a max torque of 30 Nm (265 inch/lbs) for driving screws down to depths of 25 mm in wood and 10 mm in metal.

Bosch Professional GSR 12 V-15 Cordless Drill Driver Set Review

The mighty little Bosch Professional GSR 15 Flexiclick set is powerful, compact and comes with some of the best accessories I’ve tested out.

Forming part of Bosch’s “blue” line of professional-level 12 Volt power tools, the Flexiclick system is a game changer when it comes to tackling those hard-to-reach areas whether you’re putting together flat-pack furniture or building fine cabinets.

In the set you get one of the best drill drivers that you can own, but the real magic comes in the form of four different quick release Flexiclick adapters – a standard keyless 10 mm chuck, a hex head bit holder, an offset angle adapter for drilling as close as 5 mm from the edge of the wall or floor and a right-angle adapter for when access is really tight.

Just because it weighs just 600 g (without the battery) doesn’t mean that the GSR is underpowered- you get 400 – 1300 rpm, 21 torque settings and up to 30 Nm of torque, which is more than enough for a lightweight drill driver.

Bosch throw in two 2.0 Ah batteries, a charger, one of their excellent slimline hard cases and even a pair of screwdriver bits, so you can start work straight away.

How to Choose The Best Cordless Drill Driver

Disclaimer time- if you want to drill holes in brickwork or masonry, don’t buy a drill driver. Tons of poor reviews are written by hapless DIYers saying that drill drivers aren’t any good at drilling holes into blockwork. Well, they’re not designed for that in the first place!

The handheld drill is one of the most used power tools in any DIYers arsenal. Whether you’re hanging a picture or building a house, you’ll be reaching for the best drill driver you can get your hands on. But you can’t do anything without enough power to safely drill holes and drive screws.

The best drill drivers balance power and weight to give you a tool that’s light enough for anyone to hold on to but has enough grunt to drive screws into hard materials. If light weight is top of your list, go for a 12V drill driver: it sacrifices some torque and rpm to give you a tool that weighs less than 1 kg. But, if you’re more concerned with high torque and weight isn’t an issue, 18V is your friend.

Since power tools have gone cordless, you don’t have to worry about tripping over power cables or finding a plug, but you also need to know a bit about the battery you plug into your drill. They’re not all the same, after all.

The best drill driver battery is also a balance of weight and power, and it’s measured in Amp hours, or Ah. The higher the Ah, the bigger the battery. But the downside of longer battery life is extra weight that you have to carry around.

When it comes to the battery itself the best drill drivers all use Lithium-Ion, or L-Ion, to power up all sorts of power tools and portable electronic devices. They’re lightweight, powerful and can hold a charge for months and months without a significant loss of power.

Cordless Drill Driver FAQs

The best drill driver gives you the ultimate balance between weight and power and is packed with useful features to get the job done fast, safely and in any environment.

A keyless chuck saves time because you can tighten the collar up with just one hand- but having interchangeable adapters like the amazing Bosch GSR Flexiclip heads gives you even more scope for what you can do.

An LED work light is useful when you need to drill inside a cupboard, but it’s even handier when it stays on for a while after you let go of the trigger. I also prefer it when the work light is up above the trigger rather than on the battery pack so you can light up the precise area if you need to poke the drill in a tight spot.

Selectable torque settings are normally found as a twist-collar on the body of the drill behind the chuck. They don’t change the speed or power of the drill driver but act like a clutch so that you can drive in screws without overtightening or stripping them.

An accessory kit can make all the difference to a novice DIYer- it’ll save you from having to buy extra drill or screwdriver bits and might include cleaning heads or even flexible drive shafts.

Depending on what you need to drill into, there’s a drill bit that does the job. For wood, use a wood bit that has a sharp point and wide flutes to remove the chips. For metal, use a high-speed steel (HSS) bit that is specially hardened and coated to stay cool. Just remember that even the best drill driver isn’t designed for use on blockwork, so don’t buy masonry bits.

There are more types of screw head out there than you might think, but the most popular ones are still flat head, cross head, Pozidrive and Torx. The last two might not be familiar names, but they’re two of the most used screw types you’ll come across.
