Makita D-47363 Forstner Drill Bit Set Review
The Makita D-47363 is one of the best Forstner drill bit sets because they are excellent quality bits for a reasonable price in a handsome display case. Anyone who has worked on a building site or around tradespeople will know the good name that Makita have built for themselves, with a huge range of excellent power and hand tools for all eventualities.
We got hold of this Makita set and were impressed by the quality of the shank on each of the five bits. Forstner bits must be incredibly robust because they’re put under a lot of rotational stress when used, so the thick steel shaft is good to see on this set. This should stop any chance of bending and make sure that you get a straight cut every time.
The cutting heads look like they’re well-made and the set comes with all the main sizes you might need when you’re doing hinge or cabinet work. Add to that the handsome display case and you’ve got one of the best Forstner drill bit sets available right now, that you can put on the side in your workshop and be proud of.

Flintronic 19 Pcs Forstner Drill Bit Set Review
A brand with many different directions, the flintronic name can be seen on products as diverse as leather belts to silicone table mats. This isn’t to say that their range of drill and router bits aren’t impressive, as we found out when we tested this set.
With super-hard tungsten steel cutting heads, these Flintronic Forstner bits do the business, and for a reasonable price. Not to mention you get 19 bits that should work for every project you can think of in your workshop. They use the more traditional spur-type cutter rather than a set of teeth on the cutting head, but they work well if you keep the drill speed low and the pressure light.
Our favourite feature of this set has to be that each bit comes in its own protective case. Not only does it mean that you can take only the bits you need for the job at hand and still keep them safe, but the level of protection is excellent. They come in individual boxes, so nothing can rattle about. Easily one of the best Forstner drill bit sets we’ve come across.

Workpro 16-Piece Forstner Drill Bits Set Review
US tool brand Workpro pride themselves on their affordable dependability, with a stable of no-nonsense tools for keen DIYers and professionals to get the job done right. If you want to cut neat holes with a flat bottom on them, they know a thing or two about making the best Forstner drill bits.
This 16-piece smooth shank bit set comes with all the sizes you could possibly need as a hobbyist, and because they’re made from durable 40CR steel, they’re hard and should last for a long time even after making plenty of cuts. The teeth on the head of the bits are sharp to help prevent tear out as well.
The overall finish on these bits are good, if not quite up to the level of the Makita, but with this range of sizes at your disposal, it’s hard not to like them. The tough plastic case is another nice touch, because you can throw it in your toolbox and know that your new bits will stay in good condition.
Forstner Bit Set Buyer’s Guide
When you need to cut a large hole in a piece of wood, a normal drill bit just won’t cut it. It’s much cleaner and easier to use the best Forstner drill bits you can get your hands on.
Number of bits
The number of bits in a set is always a big draw when it comes to tools, because you know that the bit you need is usually the one you don’t have. The standard hole size for cutting things like kitchen cabinet hinges is 35 mm, so the Makita D-47363 has you covered with just five bits, but you never know when you might need more.
Construction
Due to the high level of friction created when using Forstner bits, they need to be made from strong and durable types of steel. A lot of quality drill bits are constructed from 40CR steel, but the gold standard for high performance cutting edges is always tungsten carbide.
Usage
Carpenters and kitchen fitters use the best Forstner drill bits they can find because they know they’ll need to cut hundreds of holes in their day-to-day life. Drilling out recessed holes to hang hinges or door locks are just two jobs that you couldn’t do without a decent Forstner bit. You can use them to accurately drill large holes through soft and hard woods and plastics using a hand drill or drill press.
Accessories
Keeping your Forstner bits in good condition is essential, they have plenty of sharp edges that work together to create clean cuts, so when one is of the whole system doesn’t work properly. Having a quality carry or display case like on the Makita or Workpro set will keep your bits organised and clean for when you need them.
Conclusion
Drilling clean holes is hard enough but drilling a clean hole with a flat bottom is almost impossible to do quickly without a Forstner bit. We would use any of the bits on our list again, but the best Forstner drill bits are found in the Makita D-47363 drill bit set. The level of finish is superior, and the design of the cutting heads will help you cut plenty of clean holes when you need them.
