The UK's bestFence Sprayers2022 Review

What To Look For in a Fence Sprayer

The best fence sprayer should apply an even coat to your panels with minimal dripping. It should have a sizeable reservoir capacity (at least 1000ml) to avoid regular refilling, be lightweight (under 2kg) and easy to clean after use.

You’ll also want to consider how well it handles ready-made fence paints, as diluting can be a pain and time consuming. Preferential features also include a strap, multiple nozzles, and a decent sized power cable.

Having recently switched from brushes to an electric paint sprayer, I can honestly say I’m never going back! Of course, you have to be more careful with accuracy and mess, but the time-saving benefits far outweigh this. I spent a lot of time researching and testing the best electric fence sprayers. Here is what I discovered…

Not all fence paints and treatments have the same viscosity, and finding a versatile fence sprayer that can cope with a range of different products results in owning a tool that will be useful time and time again. The Wagner Fence & Decking Paint Sprayer can be used with both water- and solvent-based paints and will evenly spray thicker liquids as well as thinner ones.

Whereas some sprayers are limited to certain products, this model can be used with any standard stains, oils, varnishes or paints. Plus, the speed at which it applies these is fairly unprecedented – able to cover six fence panels (front and back!) in 20 minutes, you’re looking at an average application rate of one side per 1 – 2 minutes (allowing a little time to refill the paint reservoir as well).

When it comes to capacity, the large 1400 ml paint container is one of the biggest featured here. As with all of these sprayers, it goes through paint at quite a rate, but this reservoir holds enough for approximately 1.5 fence panels, which is about as much as can be hoped for from these machines.

This Wagner paint sprayer also comes with a shoulder strap to help spread the weight better across the body and as improve stability. This is a job that can get tiring on the arms after a while, so this paint sprayer actually hits a good balance between capacity and weight.

In terms of coverage, this unit can be used to treat wood vertically, horizontally, or do finer work. It has an adjustable flow rate which can be altered depending on paint type to ensure an even application that doesn’t drip no matter the viscosity of the liquid.

Care does need to be taken to avoid going through the paint too fast – there is a bit of a learning curve required when it comes to working out how to most effectively use this sprayer. Adjusting the pressure on the trigger changes the application.

The mains-power cable is also quite short, which can be restrictive unless used with an extension cord, which is another things to bear in mind.

Overall though, this is the best paint sprayer on our list and well worth your consideration.

    Pros

    • Suitable for a range of different paints: solvent and water-based paint as well as creosote.
    • Creates a very even finish which isn't patchy.
    • Easy to clean after use, only takes 5 - 10 minutes.
    • Extremely quick - possible to paint six fence panels (both sides) in around 20 minutes.
    • Can manage relatively thick paint without blocking.

    Cons

    • Creates a fine mist that can carry in the wind, so nearby items (garden furniture etc.) need to be protected.
    • The paint reservoir will need refilling often, after approx. 1.5 fence panels.
    • No funnel included for refilling, but it's definitely recommended to use one.
    • The power cord length is short and can be restrictive without an extension cable.

Having control over application coverage whilst using paint sprayers is a must; it can be the difference between only being able to do large-scale jobs, and having the flexibility to use the fence sprayer for smaller tasks too. The Haupon TM-71 Fence Sprayer comes with several attachments and settings that make it ideal for a range of situations; not only is it efficient at spraying fence panels, it can also be used to paint cupboards, doors, and other more precise items.

Three interchangeable spray nozzles of different sizes come provided, for different spray patterns: 1.5 mm, 2.5 mm and 4 mm. These are made of hardwearing bronze, and can be used alongside the ‘blue air cap’, which creates a wider spray pattern, or the ‘black air cap’, which produces a narrower spray.

The blue cap makes it easy to quickly cover larger areas like fencing and decking, whilst the black cap can help out with the painting of furniture and cabinets etc. There is also a paint flow adjustment dial, which can be toggled to allow more or less product through. Whether you’re tackling lines of fence panels for the garden, or a new MDF cupboard unit for the shed, the spray can be suitably adapted to produce an even coverage without using excess paint.

This results in a versatile tool that allows for an impressive amount of customisation and control. It can be used for paint, oil based primer, stains, enamel, and airbrush coating, and can tackle various viscosities. When thicker paints are used, selecting a larger spray nozzle ensures that there are no blockages. Whilst three nozzles are included, Haupon actually have eight nozzles available in total, meaning the machine can be customised for any type of job.

A 450 W motor powers the sprayer, and it connects to the mains via a 2 m power cable which means you should expect to use it with an extension for most jobs. The 1100 ml paint reservoir is one of the largest on this list; it can get through at least one fence panel before needing a refill, which is more than can be said for some smaller containers.

    Pros

    • Easy to use for smaller jobs like spraying furniture because of narrow spray and small nozzle attachment.
    • Very little vibration makes this paint sprayer comfortable to use for extended periods.
    • Paint easily gets into smaller gaps and areas that a paintbrush would miss.
    • Can be used to paint vertically or even on ceilings by adjusting the angled paint tube.

    Cons

    • The machine itself is quite wide which can make it difficult to get into very narrow areas.
    • Cleaning the unit can take around 30 minutes especially if using oil-based paint.
    • Paint may need to be filtered before use as small particles in it will block the sprayer.
    • The short 2 m power lead could do with being 1 m longer to avoid extension cable lifting off the ground.

Whilst there are some people who enjoy the task of painting with a brush, there’s no denying that it’s a long and time-consuming process. Sometimes this is fine, and a bit of leisurely painting is welcome; however, for those moments when you want to cut a 5-day task into a 1-morning situation, the VonHaus 400W Fence Sprayer is one of the best paint sprayers to have on hand to really speed through painting jobs.

The 400 W motor can spray at a rate of 700 ml per minute on its highest setting. Comparatively, getting through an equivalent amount of paint using a brush will take upwards of 40 minutes. This fact alone makes it clear that we’re talking about a very efficient machine.

Of course, it’s not necessary to use it on the highest spray setting all the time, and indeed it might be a bit overwhelming to have to move so quickly when painting. Still, worth noting that this VonHaus fence paint sprayer can easily cut painting time by a quarter even using more manageable spray settings.

Like the other models featured, is also suitable for a full range of paints, so you don’t even have to limit yourself to just fence spraying either. Emulsion, oil-based, and water-based paints are all suitable for use with this sprayer, meaning it can be used for furniture and walls as well as outdoor surfaces.

Whilst able to be used with all the aforementioned paints, they may need to be thinned down more than they would with a more expensive model which can lead to another coat being required.

In terms of the spray, it comes from a brass nozzle (as opposed to plastic) which creates even coverage and won’t damage easily through cleaning. The spray settings are adjustable by twisting the casing around the nozzle, which creates variation between a wider and narrower spray. It has a fully adjustable paint flow as well that can also be increased or decreased by twisting a separate nozzle.

As is noticeable from the price, this VonHaus sprayer is more of a basic model, and therefore it doesn’t have as many adjustable settings as some of the pricier options. This essentially results in a machine that is well suited to larger-scale jobs (doors, fencing, etc.) but may not have the accuracy of more expensive models when it comes to precise tasks.

With an 800 ml tank, the paint reservoir does require more frequent refilling than the Haupon and Wagner paint sprayers, but again, it is a cheaper unit so this needs to be reflected in the construction somewhere.

    Pros

    • Smaller tank leads to a lighter machine which can be more manageable for some.
    • Good spray pressure which ensures good coverage on wood even in cracks and joins.
    • Paint sprayer can be angled to paint higher or lower.
    • Easy to clean as the parts come apart easily.

    Cons

    • May require paint to be thinned more than some other models.
    • Because paint needs to be thinned/watered down it can sometimes be messy and may run.
    • May block if there are particles in the paint, so paint may need filtering first.
    • Smaller paint tank needs refilling more often.

Comfort is important to bear in mind when it comes to DIY, especially seeing as certain jobs can take a long time.

The Wagner WoodPerfect Fence Sprayer offers a more comfortable fence-spraying experience than most because the motor and electric spray gun are separated into two units (connected by a hose). This reduces the weight of the spray head and means that the motor can be rested on the floor during the majority of painting jobs.

With a 280 W motor, encased in a sturdy, ergonomic unit with a carry handle, this machine produces a fine spray which is suitable for decking and fencing as well as numerous other surfaces. It can be used with all wood and metal paints, stains, varnishes and oils, no matter whether they are water or solvent based.

Additionally, it doesn’t matter where these surfaces are located, as the WoodPerfect paint sprayer can paint at all angles, including vertically.

In terms of reservoir capacity, this machine actually has one of the largest featured here at 1400 ml. Yet, compared to other units with a similar tank size, it’s not as heavy to use for extended periods due to the separate sprayer/motor design. The motor can be positioned on the floor whilst the sprayer is used (as long as the job isn’t too high) or held in the other hand.

Most paint needs to be diluted by at least 10% when using this sprayer – but check the manual and paint instructions carefully to make sure this is right for your job; it produces an even and controllable mist which dries neatly without overloading any surfaces. Nearby washing, plants, cars, etc. should be covered before starting to paint, as the particles can get carried in the breeze.

    Pros

    • Even works with undiluted Ronseal/Cuprinol paints.
    • Easy to take apart and clean in a tub of water (if using water-based product).
    • This paint sprayer creates an even finish.
    • Clear instruction booklet gives good detail about how to get best results.

    Cons

    • Using the highest 'flow' setting can often result in too much paint, causing it to run.
    • The spray-adjustment head isn't the best quality.
    • May use more paint for the same job than a paintbrush would do.

For ensuring uniform coverage, even on porous surfaces, the Tilswall 550W Fence Sprayer has a spraying force that can be adjusted from 0 – 1200 ml/min. As a result, it has enough power to ensure that no gaps are left when painting, and that there are no patches of uneven paint.

With a 550 W motor, this is one of the more powerful paint sprayers featured here, and it’s able to handle thick paint with a viscosity of up to 120 DIN/sec. This means that paint doesn’t always need to be thinned or watered down, which can result in less coats being required. Higher viscosity paint is also less likely to run, so it can create cleaner, neater finishes when it’s able to be used.

As well as being suitable for both solvent- and water-based fence paint, this sprayer can also be used to spray alcohol and other liquid disinfectants. It creates a fine mist which makes it suitable for spraying both light and heavier coverings of all the aforementioned liquids.

In terms of painting performance, the finish that is created by this electric spray gun is even and dries quickly. Overall, this machine dramatically reduces painting time and can paint in a horizontal, circular, or vertical spray patterns to achieve uniform paint coverage.

On top of this, there are three spray nozzle sizes included; the 1.0 mm and 1.8 mm diameter nozzles work well with thin paint like sealants and varnishes, whilst the larger 2.6 mm diameter nozzle makes it easier to spray more viscous paint.

With a 1300 ml reservoir capacity, it’s possible to paint one fence panel, or a couple at most, before needing to refill the tank. This is still one of the largest paint holders featured on this list, so whilst one fence panel might not sound like a lot, it’s more than many of these sprayers can achieve.

    Pros

    • Thanks to the fine spray the paint dries quickly, allowing for quicker application of a second coat.
    • Quite a wide coverage can be achieved with the paint sprayer which is quicker for bigger jobs.
    • Lid included for paint reservoir so that already-thinned paint left inside it can be saved for the following day.
    • Products like Ronseal are unlikely to require diluting.

    Cons

    • A lot of masking tape is required to protect surfaces, as it's not very accurate.
    • When lifting finger off the trigger, a splatter of paint may come out at the end.
    • It can take some time to get the right viscosity for the paint.

Painting large areas used to take days with the painstaking method of applying product with a brush. Fortunately, nowadays, the amount of time it takes to do even big jobs – like paint all the fences or decorate a room in the house – can be reduced by up to two thirds. The Ginour Fence Paint Sprayer makes it easy to spray bigger areas thanks to its large coverage and wide spray.

It’s also not prone to overheating, making it a good option for those longer jobs that require prolonged use.

Equipped with a 1300 ml detachable paint reservoir, it’s also up there as having one of the biggest capacities featured on this list. Larger areas can be covered with less refilling; it will likely need to be topped up with more paint after every 1 – 2 fence panels as a guide.

Choosing between the vertical, horizontal and circular spray patterns helps adapt this high quality paint sprayer between different jobs, and it doesn’t take long to switch between settings if the task requires several different sprays. Multiple nozzles are included, with diameters of 1.0 mm, 1.8 mm, 2.6 mm and 3.0 mm. These alter the flow and help accommodate different paint viscosities.

Speaking of flow, this can be controlled further by adjusting the flow valve, so, no matter the thickness of the paint being used (within reason), it can produce smooth, even coverage. The trigger is also pressure-sensitive, which gives a heightened sense of control when spraying.

In order to work out the viscosity of the paint, and the level of dilution required, a viscosity measuring cup comes included.

    Pros

    • Filters are included for ridding paint of debris that can block the spray nozzle.
    • Cleaning this paint sprayer is quick as it separates into five parts making them easy to wash.
    • Can be used to efficiently cover pebbledash house exteriors.
    • The thin coats dry quickly so you don't have to wait as long to apply a second.

    Cons

    • Can go through a large amount of paint quickly unless flow rate is reduced.
    • The fine paint can catch in the breeze and land on nearby surfaces.
    • The short 2 m cable will nearly always have to be used with an extension cord.
    • No funnel comes included but one will be required to pour paint into the tank.

If the lacking power of your previous paint sprayers has been enough to bring you to tears, the NoCry Electric Fence Sprayer brings a powerful 600 W motor to proceedings, making sure any subsequent weeping is only from joy.

To put this strength into layman’s terms, this machine can spray at a maximum rate of 1200 ml/minute. Of course, it likely won’t be used at this setting all the time, but with a 1000 ml paint reservoir there’s enough power and capacity to get a good job done fast.

Touted as a suitable machine for both DIY and professional painting jobs, this paint sprayer can be used both indoors and out. As a result, we’re looking at a handy machine that will have far more uses than simply painting the fences every couple of years.

There are four nozzles included, of differing spray diameters: 1.5 mm, 1.8 mm, 2.2 mm and 2.8 mm. These are used to help spray paint of different viscosities, as well as define the spray size depending on the job. Several other adjustments can be made, including changing paint flow rate and breadth of spray, to fully customise application.

As one of the most powerful on the market, this model probably isn’t the best fence sprayer for beginners; there are a lot of settings and adjustments to get used to. However, for those who are more experienced with these spray painters, it’s very efficient to use. It can handle paint of up to 100 DIN/sec in viscosity (which is pretty thick), and it can be used to spray paint, oil, stain, enamel and more. It’s one of the best options around for using paint without having to thin it down first.

A common problem with electric fence sprayers, shared by this model as well, is the short mains cable. At 2 m, it’s very likely that an extension cord will be required, and often even the extension ends up coming off the floor because the 2 m cable is just so short.

    Pros

    • Viscosity cup is provided to help check product viscosity and see if it needs thinning.
    • Can be used to spray indoor walls as well as outdoor surfaces.
    • Vertical, circle and horizontal spray patterns result in good coverage on most surfaces.
    • Customers feel this offers a very good price-to-value ratio.

    Cons

    • It can take a bit of time to ensure the best viscosity, but it's worth getting it right.
    • A light spray mist may come off the gun, which can settle on nearby surfaces.
    • When spraying emulsion indoors it needs to be watered down a lot which can require several coats.
    • Paint may need to be filtered before use to stop small granules and particles blocking the nozzle.

How to Choose The Best Fence Sprayer

Fence sprayers save time. Fact. Gone are the days when you’d have to stand there, painstakingly labouring away with a paintbrush. Now, you can simply fill up an electric paint sprayer, set it going, and finish the job in a fraction of the time.

Of course, it can be hard to know exactly what to look for when buying one of these nifty gadgets. After all, you want to make sure you’re getting the best fence sprayer possible, to make the job as painless as it can be.

Take a look at the advice below to help you make an informed purchase:

The Benefits of Using a Fence Sprayer

So, why go to the effort of buying an electric paint sprayer? Are they really worth the investment? Let me tell you, without a shadow of a doubt – yes they are! I didn’t even realise how much so until I bought one.

Paintbrushes make for slow work. This much we know. But it can also be much more difficult to apply paint evenly with a paintbrush. Furthermore, they often leave visible brush marks, and can even cover up the pleasing aesthetic properties of the surface.

A fence paint sprayer will:

  • Give an even application of paint
  • Provide excellent coverage
  • Take the back ache out of fence painting
  • Save you tonnes of time!

Type of Paint

Your choice of paint sprayer will depend somewhat on the type of paint you want to use.

Some fence sprayers are quite specific about the type of paint they can be used with, and this can really limit you. Especially if you already have some paint that you’re hoping to use.

For example, all of the fence sprayers in this list are suitable for use with a wide range of paints and stains, including solvent-based and water-based paints.

This is something to keep an eye out for, as some fence sprayers won’t be able to be used with solvent paints.

Your best bet is to ensure that the fence sprayer you’re thinking about buying can be used with a lot of different paint types. These fence sprayers are unlikely to be much more expensive, and will be more versatile and useful to you in the long run.

Some fence sprayers will require you to dilute paint before using it, you should check the manufacturer’s instructions to see what to do in this case.

Size of Paint Reservoir

Electric fence sprayers range in how much paint they can hold.

If you have a large area to paint, check that the paint sprayer you choose has a large paint reservoir. Otherwise, you will end up refilling the tank every five minutes.

It’s easy to see that some fence sprayers will need refilling more often than others. That said, refilling isn’t too time consuming and it will still be much faster than using a paintbrush. So, it’s up to you how much importance you put on this factor.

Another thing to bear in mind, when considering reservoir size, is the flow speed of the sprayer. For example, the NoCry Electric Fence Sprayer can be adjusted to have a painting flow of up to 1200 ml / min. Seeing as its capacity is 1000 ml, you would need to refill quite often if using it on the maximum flow setting. That said, you’re more likely to use these fence sprayers on lower settings.

Adjustable Spray Settings

Most fence sprayers come with a range of spray settings. These different settings will make them suitable for vertical work such as fences and sheds as well as horizontal work such as decking and flooring.

These are great to look out for because they really will make it a lot easier to complete these different jobs. You might find it a bit more awkward if you buy a paint sprayer without these options.

Another feature to look out for are fence sprayers with an adjustable flow rate. This is useful for two reasons. One, you can adjust the flow depending on the viscosity of the paint; and two, you can change the flow to get exactly the coverage you’re looking for.

Fence Sprayer FAQs

Do I need to buy special sprayable stain to spray my fence?

The best electric fence sprayers will work with standard stains and paints meaning there’s no need to buy specialist paints. Some fence sprayer manufacturers advise diluting the product to ensure it is thin enough to work with the sprayer. The details of the dilution process will be included in the product manual.

When is the best time to spray a fence?

When spraying a fence, the wood should be dry but not too hot. A sunny spring or summer morning is usually ideal. If the wood is too hot this can affect the adhesion of the stain or paint. Additionally, you should make sure it’s not windy – the fine particles of fence paint can easily be blown about and land on nearby plants or surfaces.

What precautions should I take when using a fence sprayer?

Use a mask when using a fence sprayer so that you don’t breath in fine particles. Gloves and goggles are also advisable. In addition, you should protect surrounding areas, such as patios and plants, as a light spray jet can get blown about a lot in even a light breeze.

Watch out for any items that could be damaged by the paint such as cars, garden furniture and washing – remove these to a safe distance. If using a paint sprayer indoors, make sure the room is well ventilated and protect floors and furniture. Make sure children and pets are well out of the way before beginning to spray.
