Sun Lounger

The UK's bestSun Loungers2022 Review

The most versatile type of sun lounger has four to five adjustable positions and the option to lie completely flat. This will allow you to comfortably position yourself whether you want to read, relax or have a nap.

Look out for cup holders or attachable trays for drinks and snacks if you want a bit more luxury and practicality. Another feature to consider is a sunshade. These are suspended over the top of the lounger and help shield your eyes from the sun (though they won’t necessarily offer UV protection).

Alternatively, zero gravity chairs have become a popular option in recent years. These tilt backwards until your feet are suspended above your heart – something shown to improve circulation. Several zero-gravity chairs are featured on this list because they offer a good combination of portability, comfort and value.

Certain loungers are easier to transport than others. For an option that’s easy to take in the car, choose a recliner that folds up like a metal deckchair. These are also a great choice for gardens that are short on storage space.

If you want low-maintenance furniture, you might want to look for loungers made from PE rattan. Plastic rattan is waterproof, long lasting and doesn’t fade in the sun; however, you may need to add your own cushions. If cushions come included, make sure they can be wiped clean. It’s ideal when cushion covers can be removed and machine washed, but these can be hard to find.

Overall, I’ve gone with the Outsunny Garden Rattan Furniture Single Sun Lounger as my top pick. This stylish sun lounger is made from PE rattan and has five reclining positions; it goes from upright to completely flat. There’s a thick padded cushion included and wide arm rests for additional support.

The Outsunny Garden Rattan Furniture Single Sun Lounger is an excellent addition to any patio or garden. It’s versatile, easy to move and comfortable to sit on.

Hand woven from PE rattan, this sun lounger has the appearance of wicker with all the long-lasting benefits of a PE plastic construction. It’s weather resistant, durable and easy to wipe clean.

It comes with a padded cushion that’s 5 cm thick, and an adjustable/removable headrest that can be attached and repositioned as required.

The backrest can be locked in five different positions, offering the option to sit upright to read, or lay flat if you want to lie down completely (with plenty of options in between). The wide 8 cm armrests add to the stability and comfort.

Additionally, this lounger is very easy to manoeuvre. Even though it weighs 16.2 kg, the large wheels mean it can be moved around the garden with little effort. It’s also a strong and robust model with a 160 kg weight capacity – far more than many other sun loungers on the market.

The frame itself is made from steel, and the cream cushion is polyester. The cushion can be wiped down when necessary to clean it, but it’s not waterproof so should be taken inside during bad weather. The manufacturers recommend buying a cover separately in order to further protect the lounger.

In terms of assembly, the pictorial instructions are relatively straightforward to follow. Some of the small screws are a little fiddly, but it’s not a difficult process overall. There are also different frame colours available, so you can choose between black, brown or grey depending on your preference and the colour scheme of your garden.

Due to its design, versatility and comfort, I’ve chosen this model as the best sun lounger overall. The fact it can recline from an upright position to completely flat means it’ll get loads of use over summer, and it’s also easy to move around the garden into the sun or shade.

    Pros

    • Reclines completely flat but can also sit upright
    • Polyester cushions can be wiped down to clean
    • Assembly Instructions are easy to follow
    • Headrest can be easily attached or removed
    • Very strong with a 160 kg weight capacity

    Cons

    • Weighs 16.2 kg so may be a little heavy for some to get in and out of storage although there are wheels for manoeuvrability

With an innovative, built-in sunshade, this SONGMICS Sun Lounger helps prevent squinting in the sun no matter which way the lounger is facing. It’s also a well-designed, fully collapsible lounger with a detachable head pillow, available in black, grey, light grey and taupe.

The two features that set this apart from many other loungers are the sunshade and the folding mechanism. It compacts down like a traditional metal deckchair, meaning you don’t need loads of room in order to store it – something that can be off putting with other reclining loungers. When folded, it is roughly the same size as two folded metal deckchairs.

It also doesn’t require any assembly on arrival, it comes folded and is ready to be pulled out and used straight away.

The sunshade attaches over your head and can be adjusted to four different positions so that your entire face and neck is in shade. This will reduce the amount of glare when looking at screens, and allow you to read books and magazines without being dazzled by the sun.

This lounger is also comfortable. It reclines to four positions, and the backrest can fold down completely flat so you can lie on your stomach as well as on your back. There’s no cushion included, apart from the head pillow, so you may choose to add one separately for additional padding.

It’s quite a long sunlounger, suitable for those over 6 ft, measuring 193 cm in length. However, it is reasonably narrow, measuring 53 cm across. The weight capacity is 150 kg which is relatively high for a sun lounger – particularly a collapsible model.

The overall construction of the lounger is lightweight so it’s easy to move, with plastic connectors at the joints that are reinforced with iron. The synthetic fabric canvas is UV resistant to protect against sun damage.

It weighs a mere 6.8 kg, and can even be slotted into the boot of a car to take to the beach or on camping trips too. There are two handles when it’s folded, to make carrying easier.

Overall, this is one of the best sun loungers due to its design. It’s easy to transport and store, even if you don’t have a lot of space, will help prevent squinting in the sun, and still offers excellent value for money.

    Pros

    • Adjustable sunshade means you can keep your head in the shade without having to get up and move the lounger
    • Folds down to same size as two folded metal deck chairs so doesn’t take up too much storage space
    • Head cushion can be removed so you can lie flat on your front as well as on your back
    • Arrives assembled so can be used straight away
    • Backrest adjusts to four different positions

    Cons

    • Sun lounger is quite narrow at 53 cm
    • No padded cushions provided
    • Canopy does not offer UV protection from sun

Offering excellent value for money, this SUNMER Set of 2 Sun Lounger Zero Gravity Chairs comes with two reclining chairs, both complete with built-in sunshades and removable trays/drink holders.

The sunshade canopies are completely adjustable, able to rotate through almost 360°. This means they can be positioned to block the sun, or moved behind the chair out of the way. As mentioned, as well as the sunshades, each chair has a removable tray with a cup and phone holder so you can keep your snacks, sunglasses, drink and phone within easy reach! There is also a removable headrest pillow for each lounger.

These zero gravity chairs can be reclined between 30° and 90°. They recline smoothly, whilst you’re sitting in them, so whether you’ve got your nose in a book or you’re enjoying a snooze you’ll be able to change position without getting up.

Each chair weighs just 8.5 kg and can be completely folded like a traditional metal deckchair. This makes them easy to move around. You could even take the set on holiday or to the beach.

The frame is made from powder-coated steel and the feet have grips that prevent them from slipping on patios or decking. However, these chairs should still be taken inside when not in use to prevent rusting.  The Textilene fabric, which covers the chairs, is easy to clean and very tough.

Although these zero gravity chairs allow you to recline back a long way, they don’t allow you to lie down completely flat in the traditional sense. Therefore, you may prefer to look for a more traditional sun lounger if this is what you’re after.

Nevertheless, these are excellent chairs and some of the best sun loungers if you are after value for money. Not only do you get a set of two zero gravity chairs, but they also come with sunshades and drinks holders. Another benefit is that they are easy to fold and transport, which isn’t the case with all sun loungers.

    Pros

    • Arrive ready to use with no assembly required
    • Smooth movement when changing between positions - no uncomfortable jolts
    • Adjustable sunshade helps to prevent squinting even when facing the sun
    • Very easy to fold and store
    • Detachable side tray offers a drinks holder

    Cons

    • Sun canopy doesn’t offer full UV sun protection
    • If left outside in all weathers, some wear and tear may develop including rust

Some of the best sun loungers to buy on a budget, this set of two GardenCo Zero Gravity Outdoor Sun Loungers includes two comfortable chairs, each equipped with a range of features.

These recliners are zero gravity and fold flat for easy storage. They can be positioned at 90° (upright) or pushed back for a 45° recline. There are also two removable side tables included which can be attached to the chair and hold your drink, snacks and phone. These simply clip into place.

There’s no assembly required either. Arriving folded, all you need to do is pull the loungers out when you want to use them. Each recliner weighs just 9 kg and has a generous 120 kg weight capacity.

Whether you’re sitting up to read or are suspended further back for a snooze, the simple recline mechanism allows you to smoothly change position without getting up. The breathable fabric canvas is comfortable to sit on, and isn’t taut and uncomfortable. It attaches to the frame using elastic cords which gives it more flexibility. There’s also a removable head cushion on each recliner.

The frame itself is made from powder-coated steel. This creates a strong foundation, but should still be stored when not in use to help prevent rust.

One of the best things about these chairs is that they are very breathable. Whilst loungers with thick padded cushions can get hot in the sunshine, these recliners stay cool. Even on the hottest days, the mesh fabric will help air to circulate around your body for added comfort.

There aren’t many downsides to these loungers, although they may not suit those who want to fully recline – lying completely flat isn’t possible.

Given their price, and the fact you get two loungers included, these are a great choice for anyone on a budget. They’re well-designed chairs that are also ideal for taking on camping trips and to the beach. Plus, they’re a great option for entertaining at home as well.

    Pros

    • Fold flat making the recliners easy to transport and store
    • Two chairs included which makes them inexpensive for the price
    • Fabric is breathable which allows air to circulate whilst sitting
    • Clip on side table is the perfect spot for storing a drink, phone or sunglasses
    • Easy to recline and can lock in the position you want

    Cons

    • Can suffer weather damage if not stored correctly and kept sufficiently dry
    • Not possible to lie completely flat

  • Our Review

The Outsunny Garden Patio Rattan Wicker Folding Sun Lounger is a lounger that allows for comfortable reclining but can also be folded up for storage. It has a comfortable moulded shape, and a thick, padded cushion.

The curved design conforms to the body’s natural curve, allowing you to lie in a position which can feel more natural compared to a totally flat position.

The cushion adds additional comfort. It has a depth of 3 cm which, although not the thickest on the market, feels soft and supportive. The cushion can also be wiped clean when needed, and removed from the lounger if required.

There are no adjustable positions, but the pre-set angle allows for a comfortable semi-upright seated position. Although not the most versatile recliner, it’s one of the best sun loungers in terms of comfort thanks to the cushion and frame shape. An added benefit is that it can be collapsed for storage, something not always possible with this style of PE rattan recliner.

Another plus is the strong construction, although this does mean it’s heavier than most of the loungers featured here. This lounger has a steel frame covered by woven PE rattan, and it weighs 16.1 kg. It has a maximum weight capacity of 160 kg.

As mentioned, when you do need to store this lounger, you shouldn’t struggle for space. The backrest folds inwards, and the dimensions of the folded lounger are 60 x 93 x 31 cm. This makes it very compact and it’s relatively easy to carry and store in smaller spaces if needed. A cover is recommended if you intend to keep it outside.

All things considered, this is a great choice for anyone with limited storage space who still wants a rattan recliner. It also has a contemporary look about it and a comfortable, practical shape.

    Pros

    • Folds up compactly so it’s easy to store and carry
    • Very comfortable - curved design mimics the body’s natural curve
    • Contemporary colour scheme complements most gardens
    • Cushion is easy to wipe clean if needed
    • High maximum weight capacity of 160 kg

    Cons

    • Can’t adjust angle of backrest
    • No wheels for portability which may make the 16.1 kg weight difficult for some to manage
    • Cushion cover isn’t removable so you can’t clean it in the washing machine

If you want a recliner with a little more versatility, the KingCamp Reclining Sun Lounger is my top recommendation. For starters, there are several colours available: Wine, Beige, Blue or Sandy.

However, it’s not only the choice of colours that make this versatile, but all of the different ways it can be used. Firstly, the adjustable backrest reclines to four different positions (with one of these being totally flat). Secondly, it’s also possible to change the angle of the leg rest too. It can be positioned at a 45° angle or in a horizontal position.

In fact, this lounger is so comfortable and practical that many people have used it as a camp bed as well as a sun lounger.

Even if you’re not camping, this lounger offers an ideal spot to chill on a sunny day. It has an ergonomic design and a padded, removable pillow. The fabric is strong 600D Oxford cloth and it’s attached to the frame via a double bungee system which gently supports your body. The shape is specifically designed to reduce muscle tension and stress.

There’s a removable, washable side pocket that can be used to store your book, phone, drinking bottle or snacks – perfect for both relaxing in the garden and camping.

Constructed from anodised steel, this lounger is very sturdy. It has a weight capacity of 120 kg, and it weighs just 6.4 kg (making it one of the lightest loungers featured here). It folds easily, much like a traditional metal deckchair, which means it doesn’t take up much room.

Plus, there’s also no additional assembly needed – simply unfold and relax.

Compared to some loungers, this model could be considered a little narrow at 59 cm. Whilst this helps with transport and storage, some people may prefer a little more space.

Nevertheless, I still consider this to be one of the best sun loungers in terms of versatility. The fact that it can be used as a camping bed as well as a sun lounger, due to the various adjustable angles, makes it an immensely useful and great value option.

    Pros

    • The leg rest is adjustable, as well as the backrest
    • Can be used as a camp bed as well as a sun lounger so it’s great for camping holidays
    • Folds up compactly in the same way as a metal deckhair
    • Very lightweight at just 6.4 kg so easy to move around the garden
    • High weight capacity of 120 kg

    Cons

    • Relatively narrow at 59 cm wide

The Transcontinental Allibert Daytona Sun Lounger is the one of the best rattan sun loungers; it’s a stylish addition to any outdoor space and is available in Brown, Cappuccino or Grey to suit your garden.

This lounger has a modern rattan design, and is very comfortable thanks to its padded cushion and adjustable backrest. The backrest offers four different positions, from relatively upright to completely flat. It’s also comfortably wide, measuring 67 cm across.

Due to its versatile design, this sun lounger can also be used as a flat bench when guests are round (as long as the maximum weight limit isn’t exceeded).

The padded cushion is made from taupe-coloured polyester. It can be wiped down when necessary but it’s not waterproof. Leaving it out in the rain can cause water spots to appear which are hard to get rid of; however, it’s easy to remove and store.

There’s some assembly required, but it’s relatively easy and there are no tools required. The lounger is made up of 3 x 70 cm sections, so it can be taken apart and stored in smaller sections if necessary. There’s also very little maintenance needed as the PE rattan is UV resistant and waterproof. In fact, according to the manufacturer, the plastic frame is also recyclable, which is good news if you’re reluctant to buy new plastic products.

Overall, this is one of the best sun loungers if you want a sturdy rattan option that is robust and simple to assemble. It has the added benefit of doubling as a bench to seat more people.

    Pros

    • Very easy to put together with no tools required
    • Made of UV-resistant, fully-waterproof plastic
    • No metal parts which could rust and weaken
    • Stylish design with cushions are a nice contrast to the base
    • Weighs just 11 kg so it’s easy to move around the garden, although there aren’t any wheels

    Cons

    • Water marks can stain the cushion if it gets wet - best kept fully dry

How to Choose The Best Sun Lounger

When the sun makes an appearance, we all want to make the most of it – especially as it can be a rare commodity here in the UK!

Whilst some loungers might seem like something you only associate with hotel resorts and holidays, they’re also a great thing to have in the back garden.

For starters, they’re often more comfortable than the standard deckchair, making it easier to stay outside in the sun all day, be it reading, sunbathing or taking a nap…

There are a few things to look out for, when trying to choose the best sun lounger for your garden, and the style that suits you best might be different to what suits your neighbour. Below, you’ll find more information about the different designs, what to look out for and what to avoid.

Construction Material

Most sun loungers have frames made from aluminium, steel, plastic or hardwood. All of these are hardwearing although there are a few things to bear in mind:

  • Steel tends to be more at risk of corrosion than aluminium, so extra care should be taken to keep the lounger dry if it has a steel metal frame.
  • Plastics should have UV-resistant properties. If they don’t, they may be prone to fading and weakening in the sun and should be stored whenever they’re not in use.
  • Wooden frames will require treating every few years to protect from water and insects.

If you want to extend the life of your sun lounger, buy a cover and put it over the chair when it’s not in use. This will protect it from any sudden extreme weather (which is quite likely, knowing our summers!).

Maximum Weight Capacity

Most sun loungers will come with a recommended weight capacity. Ideally, look for as high a weight capacity as possible, around 120 – 160 kg. This limit should not be exceeded, even if it seems as though the lounger can withstand a higher weight.

The reason for this is that exceeding the weight capacity can lead to damage of the components over time, and could lead to future weaknesses and breakages.

Cushion Material

It’s not only the lounger’s frame that needs to stand up to the elements, but the cushion or canvas material as well.

For the most part, stuffed cushions should be stored away when the lounger is not in use. Although many of them are shower proof, it’s not worth chancing a downpour. If cushions get very wet they may take a long time to dry, or get stained. Storing them away will prolong their lives for many reasons.

Plus, it’s not only rain that can damage textile cushions, but the sun as well. UV rays can cause fabric to bleach and degrade.

If you’re buying a sun lounger that has a removeable padded cushion, make sure that the cover is removeable too (often they have a zip fastening) so that the cover can be easily washed.

Loungers without removable cushions will have some sort of suspended ‘canvas’ to lie on. You may want to provide your own cushions, especially if lying down, as these can be less comfortable to kick back on.

Avoid too thin a canvas material and look for something that is easy to wipe clean. Good options include Textilene and other synthetic woven fabrics.

Sun Lounger Comfort

The comfort of a sun lounger generally comes down to a couple of things: it’s potential to recline, and its padding.

If you’re after maximum versatility, look for a lounger which has around 4 – 6 adjustable positions. This is standard, although some loungers may have unlimited range if they have a different locking mechanism.

Bear in mind that not all loungers are able to lie completely flat, so you’ll need to decide if this is important to you. Also, it may be harder for some people to get out of a lounger that lies flat, so anyone with reduced mobility may benefit from a more upright design.

Some sun loungers come with built-in cushioning; this usually makes them relatively comfortable without being overly padded. Seeing as the cushioning can’t be removed in these designs, it’s usually just enough whilst still allowing the lounger to be folded easily.

On the opposite ends of the scale, there are sun loungers that come with no padding, and those which come with large, removable padded mattresses.

What you choose will be down to personal preference, and you can always add padding to unpadded loungers. Just remember that loungers that come with padding included usually have a way to attach it to the chair. If you choose to add cushions yourself, they may slide around.

One final thing that can improve the comfort of your lounging experience is how easy the lounger is to move. This can make all the difference for easily moving in or out of the hot sun.

Loungers with wheels are easy to move around. Wheels are especially good to look out for if you think you will struggle to lift and move the lounger without them. It’s good to be able to move them round several times during a hot afternoon, without it being too much effort.

Alternatively, there are double-ended loungers which offer an alternative solution: you can leave them in place and change which end is elevated depending on the position of the sun. This way you may be able to change if the sun is in front or behind you.

Storing Your Sun Lounger

Large sun loungers are solid and comfortable but can take up a lot of space to store.

For example, non-folding designs with box-style bases are not easy to pack away. These may only be suitable if you have a large garage or shed that you can store them in over winter.

Alternatively, there are sun loungers that fold up, or even be stack on top of each other, which is useful if space is limited.

These are things that need to be considered on a case by case basis, but can be easy to forget when caught up with looking at the lounger’s other specifications.

When it comes to storage, ask yourself:

  • How does this lounger store away? (e.g. does it fold, detach, stack or need to be stored whole)
  • How large is it in its ‘storable’ form?
  • How much storage space do I realistically have available?

It might seem obvious, but these are all good things to check first. There’s nothing worse than a product getting damaged outside because there wasn’t enough room to store it over winter.

Zero-Gravity vs Traditional Sun Loungers

Zero-gravity loungers alter their positions depending on how you distribute your weight on the chair. This can be useful, as it means you don’t have to stand up to reposition the chair if you’d like to recline, but some people may find it inconvenient or uncomfortable. It can take a bit of time to get used to adjusting an zero-gravity chair when you first get one.

With traditional sun loungers, you need to physically choose which ‘reclining’ position you would like the chair to be in. Depending on the style of the chair, this is done by adjusting the arm rests or the position of the back support. Often, you need to get out of the chair to make these adjustments.

One final difference is that zero-gravity loungers don’t tend to recline to a full 180°. Whilst they can come pretty close, if you want to lie entirely horizontal then you might want a different style of lounger.

Sun Lounger FAQs

I don’t have much storage space, is there a sun lounger that can be left outside all year round?

Many sun loungers are highly durable and can be left outside all year round without suffering too much damage. Look for a model that has UV- and weather-resistant properties. If in doubt, message the manufacturer and ask if the lounger can be left outside. You will also want to choose something that is relatively heavy so that it won’t get blown around in the winter.

If you want to leave a sun lounger out year-round, invest in a cover to protect it from the worst of the elements over winter.

You might also like to investigate folding sun loungers as these are easy to store and take up less space in a shed, garage or attic.

Are the cushions of my sun lounger waterproof?

Generally, sun lounger cushions are shower-proof only. This means that they will fare ok in a short shower, but shouldn’t be left outside in more extreme weather. It’s best to bring sun lounger cushions inside when not in use, to protect the fabric from both wet weather and UV rays.

If the cushions accidentally get very wet, remove and wash the covers and lie the cushions out somewhere to dry.

How can I clean my sun lounger?

If you have a sun lounger made from poly-rattan or another plastic material, you can simply wash the sun lounger down with a sponge and warm, soapy water. You can use the same solution to gently clean wooden furniture.

For metal or plastic furniture, you can also use a hose, but don’t use it on too powerful a setting, especially on painted surfaces.

Make sure that the furniture dries relatively quickly, and don’t put a protective covering over the sun lounger until it is dry.

Are zero gravity sun loungers comfortable?

Zero gravity chairs tilt you backwards whilst keeping your position in the chair itself the same. They tilt instead of recline, until your feet are higher than your heart. At this position, you feel weightless, which can be very relaxing. Although they can be difficult to adjust at first, you soon get used to how to tilt them (generally by pushing back against the backrest and footbar).

This feeling of relaxation when the body is at zero gravity was actually developed by NASA, who observed how the bodies of astronauts relax when in zero gravity environments; so it’s safe to say that there’s a fair amount of science behind this design.

Zero gravity chairs aren’t for everyone (for instance, those who like to lie flat on their back or stomach for a snooze), but there’s no denying that for most people, they are exceedingly comfortable and can be very relaxing.

How much weight can a sun lounger hold?

At the lower end of the scale, you may find a sun lounger that can withstand around 90 kg comfortably.

Some of the loungers I’ve recommended have a weight capacity of 160 kg. These loungers are extremely strong, and should be able to hold the vast majority of adults.

You should also keep an eye on the lounger’s width. Some loungers are very strong, yet narrow. If you are concerned about your sun lounger being too narrow, look for one that’s over 65 cm wide.
