Material
Blades are usually made from either plastic or metal. Plastic blades are used for the same type of vegetation as you would a nylon line. They are best for less dense areas and shorter lawns. Metal blades are designed for tackling heavily overgrown areas and dense vegetation.
Design
Plastic blades are an alternative to nylon lines, and they generally have an easy to use design. They can be snapped into position and are very durable. Provided you keep them away from hard surfaces, you shouldn’t need to replace your plastic blades too regularly.
Metal blades come in a range of designs, with multi arm and multi teeth designs the most common. 3 arm metal blades cut through tough grass, and these usually come with an adapter so you can fit them to most strimmer types. Those with multiple teeth are best for very dense areas, and offer more of a sawing action.
Safety
Provided you use the blades in the way they were intended and follow all safety precautions, your blades shouldn’t cause you any harm. If you are using plastic safety blades, ensure you keep them away from hard surfaces and avoid strimming areas where there’s the possibility of rocks and stones.
Strimmer Blades FAQ
How to fit a blade to a strimmer?
This depends on the type of strimmer as well as the type of blade you are using. Most plastic blades can be clipped into place. For large multi arm blades, you should first remove the trimmer head. Put the strimmer blade on top of the drive disc, then place the trimmer head back on top. Fasten everything back together and tighten the bolts.
