Stanley 1-54-022 20 oz FatMax AntiVibe Brick Hammer Review

Stanley’s FATMAX range is well-known by DIYers and professionals alike, and it never fails to provide innovative tools with ergonomic grips. The AntiVibe brick hammer we tested certainly has both of them.

The FATMAX brick hammer has a robust one-piece double-forged construction. It’s been specially designed for optimum balance and swing, and should be able to split bricks with ease.

The handle makes the most of the Stanley AntiVibe technology they developed, which isolates the head from the shaft to dampen vibrations that would otherwise travel up your arm.

The excellent hand grip is designed to work as well in the wet as in the dry, we thought it was well moulded and very comfortable. This Stanley brick hammer is the best hammer for a bricklayer to use on site every day.

Rolson 10802 600 g Brick Hammer Review

Most DIYers and professionals will recognise Rolson as a solid budget brand, that offer no-nonsense hand tools that get the job done, without breaking the bank. The 10802 brick hammer we looked at keeps this tradition going, with a solid brick hammer at an affordable price.

The Rolson brick hammer is perfectly suited for the task of for breaking, trimming and cleaning bricks and slabs, with a slightly curved head and small face for maximum impact. The chisel end comes sharp straight from the manufacturer, and we think it’s an excellent functional tool for the money.

It might not have the fine finish found on the best bricklayer hammer, but it costs about a third of the price. Rolson have managed to provide a decent quality bricklayers hammer for not a lot of money here.

The fibreglass handle is really solid, and the rubberised grip moulds nicely to the hand, even in gloves. If you have a DIY bricklaying project, it will save you time, money and most of all, effort.

Meister GS 2284000 600 g Brick Hammer, Berlin-Style, Two Components Review

German tool manufacturer Meister have produced a seriously capable brick hammer

What sets this Meister GS 228400 hammer apart are several design features found on the Berlin-style or pattern brick hammer. This bricklayers hammer has a rough face which should help to avoid glancing blows on bricks, and it has a wider chisel edge not found on the other brick hammers on this list.

We really like the added nail-puller on the side of the Meister brick hammer’s head, it’s a nice touch that sets this aside as the best brick hammer for multi-tasking. Most brick hammers would struggle with nail removal or prying, so this just adds another layer of usefulness not found elsewhere.

Estwing E3-20BLC 20-Ounce Mason Hammer with Vinyl Nylon Cushion Grip Review

One of the best hand tool brands to come from the USA, Estwing make premium hammers that are guaranteed not to break. This includes stone hammers and masonry hammers and the E3-20BLC mason hammer we looked at is quite simply the best bricklayer hammer that money can buy.

With a one-piece, all steel double-tempered construction, the head of this Estwing brick hammer is supremely well balanced and shaped for professional bricklaying tasks. The chisel edge is sharp enough to scrape mortar from blocks easily or chase out around bricks without much effort at all.

Estwing’s patented Shock Reduction Grips make the hammer easy to hold and genuinely reduces vibration to the hand and wrist, which we think should keep you going all day long on site.

You can feel the quality of this Estwing brick hammer as soon as you pick it up, and we’d be happy to add it to our tool kit any time. It’s worth the extra money when you know it’s going to last for decades.

Plumb T11421 24 oz Fiberglass Brick Hammer, Black/Red Review

Plumb has been making tools in the USA for more than a hundred years, and they’re known for their excellent range of hammers.

The T11421 brick hammer that we got our hands on is a durable masonry hammer that should hold together easily even during the toughest of jobs. We really like the fibreglass handle, because it reduces the overall weight but still allows for a 24 oz head.

The chisel end of this Plumb masonry and stone hammer is long enough to really rake out mortar, split bricks or even take on a geology expedition. It’s got a flat “T” shape that means it can get into the tightest cracks and lever out bricks or stones as needed.

Roughneck 61624 24 oz Brick Hammer Review

Established in Los Angeles back in 1976, Roughneck are probably best known for their Gorilla wrecking bars. Famous for their ultra-tough kit, it’s no surprise that the Roughneck 61624 is one of the best brick hammers you can buy today.

Made from drop forged steel and boasting a milled striking face, this is a heavyweight brick hammer that will make short work of brick, block or stone. Even though the head section is a massive 24 oz, it’s well balanced with a solid core handle that has been permanently bonded on.

Probably the best thing about this brick hammer is the bi-material rubberised plastic handle. It’s extremely comfortable and non-slip, no matter what the weather’s like outside. It’s incredibly important to have a good grip on a hammer, so the Roughneck is easily one of my favourites.

DIY Doctor 21 oz Brick Hammer Review

With a unique shape for extra comfort, the 21 oz DIY Doctor brick hammer is a different beast from the traditional bricklayer’s hammer. Looking more like a traditional claw hammer, it’s one of the best geologist picks I’ve come across recently.

The 21 oz head is an ideal weight for most DIYers. It’s not too heavy but it still packs a punch when you need it to. The chisel end is shorter than a traditional brick hammer and has a more pronounced curve, but in the right hands, it’s just as effective.

Featuring a solid fibreglass handle rather than a steel one, you get a bit more shock protection which will come in handy during long work sessions. The TPR handle is well shaped to fit your hand and should help to keep any vibrations down to a minimum. It’s basic, but one of the best budget brick hammers available right now.

Silverline HA65B 16 oz Tubular Shaft Brick Hammer Review

Well known in the UK for their huge range of budget-friendly and useful tools, Silverline know a thing or two about making the best brick hammer for DIY bricklayers. This inexpensive HA65B bricklayer’s hammer isn’t the highest performance tool on my list, but if you want a decent hammer without a huge price tag, you can’t go wrong.

The 16 oz head is the lightest on my list, it’s not designed for heavy-duty smashing but ideal for light work when you need a bit more precision. The drop-forged hammer head is chrome plated for corrosion resistance and features a standard square face to help make straight cuts.

The tubular steel shaft is also chrome plated, and although it’s not as tough as a solid shaft, it helps to keep the overall weight down for the average DIYer. At the bottom of the shaft is a blue high-grip handle that should be oil and chemical resistant. A decent budget brick hammer for weekend DIYers.

Brick Hammer Buyer’s Guide

When laying courses of bricks, there will always be the odd ones you will need to cut, be they those at the end of the run or those you will have to custom shape. And for that reason you will need a good quality brick hammer in your toolbox.

Safety

Whenever you use a bricklayers hammer, you should ensure you’re wearing the right PPE, especially when breaking bricks or blocks. Flying debris can cause serious injury so you should remember that proper kit is essential.

Safety goggles are probably the most essential item of PPE when working with bricks or blocks. The best brick hammer in the business can’t stop bits of brick from hitting you in the face, so make sure you’re protected.

Work gloves are essential to avoid tearing up your hands, unless you work with blocks on a daily basis of course. They won’t give much impact protection from a glancing blow, but having a good grip on a brick can help avoid injury.

Safety boots might slow you down on ladders, but a composite or steel toe will save you a lot of pain if you drop a brick on it.

Ear defenders help to prevent cumulative hearing damage. Hammering is noisy, so taking care of your ears just makes sense.
