Faithfull FAIFG4 4lb Fibreglass Club Hammer Review

Faithfull has been around for nearly thirty years in the UK and has carved out a reputation for honest hand tools. This one weighs more than the best 3lb club hammer, so it should make light work of any DIY demolition project.

Their general-purpose FAIFG4 club hammer is a no-frills workhorse that offers a surprisingly comfortable grip and is also the heaviest lump hammer on the list. The heat-treated head has a generous impact surface size, which makes it easy to hit what you want it to, and should last a long time.

Our favourite feature is a simple one; the hanging hole that makes it easy to store.

S&R C50 1500 gm Club Hammer with Fiberglass Handle Review

German manufacturer S&R have made an excellent quality club hammer in their recognisable blue and yellow colours.

At nearly a foot in length, there’s plenty of room for large hands in gloves on the handle, and the double curve design at the base makes it comfortable to use and much harder to slip. Combined with the PVC moulded grip, we can’t see this flying out of your hand any time soon.

The black powder coated head is squared for maximum striking surface and comes in at the top of the weight list at 1,500 g, so it should be tough enough to undertake demolition work as well as the best lump hammers on this list.

OX 2.5 lb / 1.1 kg Club Hammer - Sledgehammer Review

Australian toolmaker OX is known for their bold and reliable hand tools, so we were pleased to try out this solid club hammer in their recognisable blue colours.

The best thing about this OX club hammer has to be the handle. The ergonomic design looks great and is extremely grippy. The blue rubber feels like it’s slightly softer than the surround, which helps mould it to your hand. But a true sign of the best lump hammer is the lack of vibration we felt, even when striking a solid surface.

The head is securely fastened and has a nicely finished flat face to it, and the striking surface is nice and big, so we expect this OX club hammer to become a trusted member of any tool kit.

Blackspur BB-HM161 Club Hammer with Fibreglass Shaft Review

Blackspur make no-nonsense tools that get the job done at a reasonable price. You can rely on them to offer a quality tool that won’t break the bank, so we were pleasantly surprised by the finish on their BB-HM161 club hammer.

With a light 1 kg head, the Blackspur club hammer we tried out was easy to manoeuvre and heft without tiring out your arm like one of these heavier hammers on this list. It’s the best club hammer for taking camping to drive in tent pegs, as it won’t add too much weight to a full camping kit.

The handle feels nice and grippy with a rubberised texture, and it all conforms to BS Standard 876:1995, so you have no worries about taking it on site with you.

Presch 1500g Club Hammer - Lump Hammer Review

German tool brand Presch are a young start-up with big ideas about making functional and impressive-looking hand tools. The Presch 1,500g club hammer we tried out fitted into both categories, it strikes hard and looks great.

With an impressive 1.5 kg head and light fibreglass handle, which is rated to be almost indestructible, the weight on this Presch club hammer feels very forward and aggressive. This should mean that you can hit things hard without much of a backswing, which is great for confined spaces.

Estwing EB3 3lb Club Hammer Review

When it comes to premium American-made tools, Estwing are the best club hammer manufacturers around. The level of attention and build quality are really hard to beat, and we’d be proud to carry any of their tools in our kit.

The fact that this Estwing club hammer is a one-piece forged head and handle shows that this is a club hammer built to last. There are none of the worries about over-striking: hitting the shaft against something and damaging it is pretty much impossible.

The same goes for the handle. The moulded and bonded grip is guaranteed not to fall off and includes Estwing’s Shock Reduction Grip for comfortable use. This is said a lot, but this Estwing lump hammer is the last lump hammer you’ll ever have to buy.

Club Hammer Buyer’s Guide

Hammers have been in use for millions of years, and started out as just whatever rock was laying around at the time. Things have moved on a lot from there, and now we have access to the best club hammers (aka lump hammers) that money can buy. From all-steel construction to high-tech fibreglass handles, there’s a club hammer to suit everyone.

Safety

Using any type of tool can be dangerous, but hammers especially can cause serious injury if not used correctly. You should always wear the correct PPE including shatter-proof eyewear in case of flying debris, especially during demolition work.

You should always pick the right hammer for the job. A club or lump hammer is designed to be used one-handed for heavy hammering or light demolition work only.

Always make sure you have room to swing your hammer and that you are positioned in front of the workpiece properly. Being incorrectly positioned can lead to glancing blows and slips, that can cause serious injuries to you or the people around you.
