Lump Hammers Buyer’s Guide
Construction material
The best lump hammers ( also known as club hammers) have forged steel heads (like the Silverline HA62 Hickory Lump Hammer) and hardened striking faces (like the Roughneck Club Hammer ) for withstanding heavy impacts, both extremely important features for heavy-duty work.
Usage
Lump hammers are useful for a wide range of heavy duty tasks. They can be used for demolition work, cutting paving or bricks, removing tiles, hammering in masonry nails or forcing in ground spikes as well as a wide range of DIY jobs, including landscaping, building and household tasks.
They are often used with cold chisels and bolsters when cutting slabs or removing tiles.
Weight
Lump hammers come in a range of weights. For heavy jobs, such as knocking down a wall or breaking up material for hardcore, choose the heaviest hammer you can handle comfortably. For more lightweight jobs, such as removing old tiles or driving in stakes, a smaller lump hammer may suit you better.
Handle
Lump or club hammers usually come with either a hickory or fibreglass handle.
Wooden handles absorb shock pretty well as they are naturally flexible. As long as you look after your wooden handle by cleaning it after use, oiling it regularly and never leaving it out in the rain, it should last for many years. Hickory is often used because it is particularly strong, as well as being flexible. This allows it to take heavy blows without splitting or cracking. In addition, wooden handles are comfortable to use in intense heat or cold as they handle extremes of temperature well and also offer a good grip.
Fibreglass handles are strong, lightweight and moisture resistant. A fibreglass handle like that on the OX Club Hammer absorbs shocks well, making it comfortable to use. In addition, fibreglass is moisture resistant and won’t rot if it gets wet. Fibreglass handles are also resistant to oil and most solvents.
Whichever type of handle you choose, ensure it feels comfortable to use.
Grip
In addition to the handle, some lump or club hammers also have a vinyl or rubberised covering. This helps reduce impact and absorb vibration. In addition, a soft grip makes the handle extra comfortable to hold for long periods and also maintains a reasonable temperature.
