C.K 3963 210mm Cable Cutter Review

The C.K 3963 cable cutters are specially designed for cutting aluminium and copper wires, and the razor-sharp blades are precision ground to make light work of cable cutting and stripping jobs, and leave a supremely clean edge to insulation and cores.

We really like the fact that these cable cutters are long enough to apply much force to the cutting blades, but are small enough for one-handed comfortable use.

The Carl Kammerling line of tools is respected by DIYers and professionals around the world for functional, well-engineered hand tools.

Pros

  • The drop forged carbon steel blades are seriously strong and wickedly sharp. There’s good reason why these are the go-to wire cutters for a lot of professional electricians.
  • You get two cutting positions on one set of jaws. They’re machined to cut and strip larger wires close to the hinge, and smaller ones closer to the tip of the blades.
  • The longer handles on these pliers compared with the nuosen ones mean you can put a lot more force into the cutting jaws. They’ll go through 10 mm wires easily.

Cons

  • These are wire cutters designed to work on soft metals only such as aluminium and copper core cables. You can’t use them on pattress screws or hard metal wires like steel brake cables.
  • Compared with the C.K RedLine combicutters, you don’t get the all-important VDE test mark. These are not rated to protect you against up to 10,000 Volts.

Bahco 2233D-240 H/Duty Wire Stripper 240MM Review

Bahco are a premium Swedish tool brand, that make a range of well-made and reliable hand tools for electricians, plumbers, and carpenters, as well as serious DIYers. We tried out their 2233D-240 H/Duty Wire Stripper and really liked the ergonomic and accurate design.

These heavy-duty wire cutters definitely pack a punch when it comes to cutting wires. The classic Bahco orange grips are comfortable and non-slip, and the return spring makes them easy to use one-handed.

We really like the specially shaped blades. They have several cutting positions – straight for cutting through insulation and cores, as well as two different sized recesses for stripping different gauges of wire.

Pros

  • Compared with the C.K wire cutters, these do most of the same jobs but for half the price. Bahco make quality and reliable kit, so if you don’t need the anvil feature these are perfect.
  • The shape of the jaws means you can strip two different sizes of wire with just the one tool. There’s a big notch and a small notch depending on what cable you have in your hand.
  • Underneath the joint where the blades meet there are stoppers on the inside of each handle. These make sure that the blades come together cleanly, and you don’t crush your fingers.

Cons

  • Although the plastic dipped sleeves will afford some electrical insulation at low Voltage, they’re not VDE certified. If you’re working on electrics, you need proper protection.
  • More than a few users have been unhappy with the quality control from Bahco. It seems that some pairs of pliers are sent out without being sharp enough.

WORKPRO Anti-Slip Wire Cutters Review

WORKPRO have built themselves a solid reputation for producing honest and inexpensive tools. Their wire cutters have proven to be comfortable and capable, even if they don’t last for as long as some premium brand cutters.

The Chrome Vanadium steel used for these wire cutters is ideal for the job. Extremely hard and resistant to corrosion, they won’t rust out on you any time soon. The cutting edge is hardened and shaped to give you a cutting hole as well as wire strippers.

Decked out in WORKPRO’s recognisable blue and red colour scheme, the long handles are coated in grippy TPR. This thermoplastic rubber makes the cutters easy to work with and comfortable to hang on to.

For the money, these are some of the best budget wire cutters you can get your hands on.

Pros

  • The blade edges have been hardened up to an impressive HRC 56 – 66. This means they’ll stay sharper for longer and can cut through copper and aluminium wire easily.
  • With a TPR coated handle, they’re not just comfortable to use, but insulated against electrical current as well. If you’re working on electrical cable, this is an essential bit of safety kit.
  • If you have a steady hand, these cutters are excellent for stripping wires. The round shape of the blade edges will pull away the outer sheath without cutting through the metal core.

Cons

  • These wire cutters are not designed to cut through extra hard metal wires like stainless steel brake cables. For that, you’ll need a more expensive and capable set of snips.
  • Several users have complained about how stiff these cutters are. You don’t have the benefit of an internal spring to open the jaws for you either.

C.K 431008 160mm RedLine VDE Combicutter3 Review

German tool brand C.K pride themselves on the highest manufacturing standards, and their own RedLine VDE Combicutter3 are some of the best wire cutters on the market right now. They’re light, comfortable, and durable.

The wire and cable cutters are packed with clever features such as two different gauge wire strippers and a wire bending anvil. It’s probably the last pair of pliers an electrician will ever need on-site. Plus it’s rated to protect the user from up to 1,000 Volts of AC, so your safety is guaranteed.

Our favourite feature that sets these wire snips apart are the included screw shears. When changing plugs or switches, you can feed in two different sizes of electrician’s screw into the hole above the handle and cut it off neatly, without damaging the thread.

Pros

  • Boasting unbeatable German manufacturing processes, C,K are widely recognised as one fo the best hand tool makers in the world.
  • VDE certification is considered the most reliable testing method for electrical insulation. The handles are designed to protect you against up to 10,000 Volts. They’re the ideal pliers for working on electrical wiring.
  • These wire cutters also carry the Geprüfte Sicherheit, or “GS Mark”. This means that these pliers have been tested to destruction and meet all German safety standards.
  • Trimming a pattress screw to fit an electrical backbox is a piece of cake with these cable cutters. Feed one into the hole in the base of the jaws and you can shear it off with one snip.

Cons

  • At this price, these cable snips are rather expensive for the casual weekend DIYer. If you’re a professional electrician you can justify the spend, but otherwise they’re a bit much. It’s true that you pay for quality.
  • It’s a shame that these snips aren’t spring loaded. If you’re using them a lot, it can get a bit tiring. Compared with the much cheaper nuosen pliers, it’s a feature I’d like to see.

Draper Redline 67988 160mm Diagonal Side Cutter Review

The Redline series of tools from Draper are budget-friendly but still fully guaranteed, and their diagonal side cutters do exactly what they say on the tin.

The induction hardened carbon steel blades come together neatly to cut wires and strip the casing off of them with a little bit of practice, and the soft grip handles feel sturdy, if not quite as soft as we would hope.

For the price, these have to be the best budget wire cutter pliers we’ve tested. They work exactly as you need them to, and offer the ideal balance between quality and affordability.

Pros

  • Compared with the eye-watering price of the C.K 431008 RedLine pliers, these ones are a bargain! If you’re a casual DIYer, these toolbox favourites won’t empty your wallet.
  • The handles are covered with a bi-material grip surface that is comfortable to hold on to. They also allow you to put more force into the jaws compared with standard vinyl sleeves.
  • The drop forged steel blades are ideal for neatly cutting things like stubborn zip ties or small diameter wires. The edges are induction hardened as well, so they should last for a while.

Cons

  • These pliers are side cutters. It means they have a flat cutting edge, which can be more difficult to use compared with curved shear type blades. You need a steady hand to avoid scoring the copper when stripping wires.
  • Compared with the C.K 431008 RedLine cable cutters, these are basic snips. There aren’t any special surfaces for cutting or stripping easily, and they’re not electrically insulated.

IRWIN VISE-GRIP Cable Cutting Pliers Review

Best known for their locking pliers, it’s no surprise that IRWIN make some of the best cable cutting pliers in the business. These VISE-GRIP wire cutters are big, strong, and feature some of the hardest cutting edges you can get.

IRWIN know how to make good pliers. These wire cutters are made from Chromium-Nickel steel, an incredibly tough alloy found in extreme environments like nuclear reactors. The machined jaws and induction hardened blades will cut through fine strand wire, and they don’t even cost that much!

The long handles are covered in a moulded TPE grip shape that makes them extremely comfortable to hold on to. There’s plenty of grip as well as insulation against low Voltage electrical current, in case you make a mistake. For the money, they’re some of the best wire strippers you’ll get thanks to the curved blade shape too.

Pros

  • Quality wire cutters from one of the most recognisable names in the industry. The extremely hard and sharp blades are perfect for cutting through aluminium and copper wiring.
  • Compared with the WORKPRO wire cutters, the blades are made from Chromium-Nickel steel, which is even harder and stays sharper for longer than Chrome Vanadium steel.
  • If you need to cut and strip a lot of twin and earth domestic cabling, these are the ideal pair of pliers. They’re sharp enough to leave clean cuts and can strip wires easily.

Cons

  • 1These are big wire cutters. Unless you have large hands, they can be difficult to operate with just one hand. You need to spread the handles wide to fit thick cables.
  • Don’t be fooled into thinking these are designed to cut the hardest stainless steel brake cables. They’re rated for aluminium and copper softer metal wiring only.

Draper Expert 57768 190 mm Wire Rope and Wire Cutters Review

Draper are one of the most recognisable UK tool brands, and their hand tools are trusted by DIYers and professionals alike. The Expert 57768 wire cutters that we tried out felt solid, and the vinyl handles helped keep a firm grip when dealing with thick gauge coated wires.

Even though they don’t include dedicated wire strippers, the spring-loaded handles and aggressive cutting design still make these one of the best heavy-duty wire cutters on the market. They’re rated for cutting up to 5 mm wire rope and 1.5 mm wire.

Our favourite feature is the design itself. The small cutting head is specifically designed for neatly cutting bicycle brake cables that easily fray. These handy heavy-duty wire cutters leave a nice finish in wire rope, so they’re great wire cutters for bike mechanics.

Pros

  • If you’re planning on cutting really hard wires such as steel brake cables, these are just the job. Compared with the WORKPRO cable cutters, you can work on stainless steel as well.
  • The way that these wire cutters have been designed is to put as much force as possible from your hand into the blade jaws. You can cut through things like steel core washing lines easily.
  • Being able to deal with up to 5 mm diameter wire rope is no mean feat. Even when compared with the expensive C.K RedLine cutters, these Draper pliers do the business.

Cons

  • One of the downsides of having such a multiplied amount of force is that the jaws only open a small amount, but the handles must open really wide. These aren’t great in confined spaces.
  • The vinyl sleeves on the handles are good for grip, but if you use these cutters a lot, they’ll hurt your hands. Compared with the soft grip Irwin cutters they’re quite uncomfortable.

nuosen Precision Wire Side Cutters Review

If you need to make accurate cuts when working with mild steel wires, these nuosen Suntin precision side cutters might be just the right tool. A beefed-up version of the toolbox staple, these cutters are really comfortable and have hardened forged blades.

The matt grip handles are made from rubberised plastic polyvinyl chloride that provides excellent non-slip properties for your hands during use. They’re much more comfortable than snips with a basic plastic sheath for a handle, and they allow you to make plenty of cuts before they start hurting your hand.

The jaws are held apart by an internal spring mechanism, and the high carbon steel jaws have been specially tempered to stay sharp even after lots of uses. They’re an inexpensive tool to add to your collection and mean you can snip away one-handed in complete comfort.

Pros

  • Compared with the WORKPRO wire cutters, these ones want to stay apart. The spring loaded jaws save you time and make repeated cuts an easy task.
  • The rubberised plastic handles are electrically insulated as well as easy to hang on to. Although they’re not VDE rated, they should still protect you from low Voltages.
  • Sometimes you don’t need the biggest wire cutters in the world to get the job done. These are ideal precision cutters for working with circuit boards and small gauge wires.

Cons

  • Several users have complained that the blades aren’t sharp enough. Although they’re not rated for extremely hard metal cables like stainless steel, they should still cut through the softer stuff.
  • Compared with the Irwin Vise-Grip cable cutting pliers, these are not strong enough to cut through fine stranded cables. These nuosen pliers are more suited to light work

How to Choose The Best Wire Cutter

Cutting and stripping wires are two unavoidable jobs for electricians, so having the best wire cutters available will save time, effort and ensure a quality finish every time.

Wire Cutter FAQs

How do you strip wires?

Wires might look similar from the outside, but they come in a wide range of constructions with different cores and coatings.

To successfully strip a wire, you need a wire stripping tool. Once you have measured the gauge of the wire, line it up with the notch in the blades and cut into the insulation. If you’ve measured correctly, the insulation should slip off, and the core will be exposed without damage.

Can I sharpen my wire cutters?

Like any edged tool, keeping it sharp is critical for ease of use and safety. You don’t need any particularly special tools to keep a sharp edge on your best wire cutter pliers either.

Before attempting any sharpening operation, take a very close look at the cutting edges. If you want to maintain a good cutting edge, you’ll have to follow the grind on the blade.

Don’t forget that if you strip material away from one side, you’ll need to remove it from the other so that the blade edges meet when closed.

Clamp your pliers securely in a bench vice, and using a flat hand-file, gently rub the cutting edge using smooth strokes. Check after every few strokes that you’re keeping to the same grind, and remember that it’s easy to take material away but impossible to replace it!
