I was excited to get my hands on this Greenworks G40PSHK2 Cordless 2-in-1 Pole Hedge Trimmer, and I did have high expectations. It works as both a pole saw and telescopic hedge trimmer, so you should be able to neaten up most of your garden with just the one tool!

Greenworks-G40PSHK2-Cordless-2-in-1-Pole-Saw-&-Pole-Hedge-Trimmer-Review-performance

It’s a cordless model, which means you’ve got freedom to move to the far end of your garden without being restricted by a cable. It runs with a 40 V battery as opposed to many others which take an 18 V or 20 V battery. You can clearly feel the difference in power, as this model is just as powerful as trimmers powered by mains electricity.

The included battery has an impressive run time of around 45 minutes, and after this time period your arms will certainly need a rest! It runs at about 96 dB, so although ear defenders are recommended, it’s not too loud that it’ll disturb your neighbours.

I found it performed as well as I’d hoped. The blades’ teeth are spaced 18 mm apart, so you’re able to tackle fairly thick branches. The blade length is 51 cm, and it extends to 2.1 m so you can reach hedges above your head. The pole saw function extends to 2.4 m.

There’s 7 head positions to choose from, allowing you to easily prune and shape hedges that are a distance away from you. The included shoulder strap is completely adjustable and allows you to support the weight even when fully extended.

It produces good results whether used as a hedge trimmer or pole saw. The cutting speed is 8 m/s and it achieves a clean finish every time. I was very impressed with the performance of this model.

Overall, I’d happily recommend this model as one of the best cordless hedge trimmers on the market. The extendable handle coupled with the dual functionality makes this hedge trimmer a great choice for gardens in need of some TLC!

Loved for their wide range of home and garden tools, VonHaus is known for being an affordable, yet reliable brand. The VonHaus Cordless Telescopic Hedge Trimmer is a top contender for the best cordless hedge trimmer.

It’s also telescopic, so it can be used to trim tall hedges as well as those at eye level. However, its reach is just 244 cm, so if you’re specifically looking for a telescopic hedge trimmer, you may prefer a different model with a longer reach. Its light weight (only 3.8 kg) makes it very easy to manoeuvre.

There’s 10 different settings that you can tilt the head to, in order to adjust hedges at various handles. The 45 cm blade is able to slice through even thicker branches with ease. I was pretty impressed with how it performed too. Although the teeth space is only 14 mm,

I was very pleased with the power behind this machine. You get around 45 minutes of run time with a 2.0 aH battery, which is decent. Even better, it runs very quietly, so it’s ideal if you’re wanting to trim a hedge that’s in close proximity to your neighbours. The battery has an indicator with 3 LED lights that display how much life is left.

VonHaus has also included some handy safety features, which make it suitable for both novices and professionals. These include a plastic blade cover, a dead-man’s switch and a reliable shoulder strap. This helps you to keep the tool well balanced and maintain control when the machine is fully extended.

All in all, this is a budget-friendly cordless hedge trimmer with an effective blade. The fact that a battery and charger comes included adds to the value for money.

Also Good
  • Blade is very sharp which makes it easier to achieve a completely clean cut
  • Both hands are required to operate this hedge trimmer which makes it very safe
  • Recharges very quickly so it’s not a problem if the battery dies
  • Rarely jams when tackling branches of 5 - 10 mm in diameter

  • Struggles with heavy and dense wood, although this is to be expected given the power
  • Shape of the front loop handle means that this trimmer feels heavier than others I’ve tested of a similar weight

Ryobi are becoming increasingly well-known in the world of DIY, particularly for producing quality machines. The Ryobi OHT1845 18V ONE+ Cordless 45cm Hedge Trimmer is no exception. It has a 45 cm blade length and an 18 mm cutting gap which allows it to get through lighter hedges.

This hedge trimmer has a 45 cm blade and it’s powered by an 18 V motor. The blade gaps are 18 mm, so you should be able to cut through branches of this thickness. It will struggle with heavy and dense wood however, although for a low power model this is to be expected.

While the hedge trimmer doesn’t jam very often, it does cut slower on larger branches. The blades are diamond-ground and, provided you stick to 18 mm or less, you should get a clean cut every time.

There’s no wires to contend with, and there’s a range of battery options and chargers to choose from, as well as the option to purchase without a battery.

At 2.5 kg, it is very lightweight. However it’s worth noting that this is without the battery, and a large battery can add substantially more weight. There’s also no shoulder strap which would make it more comfortable to use. One other slight pitfall is that it’s hard to get a decent grip on the front loop handle, which can make this hedge trimmer trickier to control.

There is a blade sheath included which protects the tool when not in use.

All in all, this is a powerful and practical hedge trimmer that doesn’t make excuses for being battery powered. It can keep up with other models and, provided you don’t overload it, is a great choice for neatening, pruning and shaping.

  • Very compact and lightweight yet still feels very solid
  • Battery is interchangeable with products from several different brands, not just Bosch
  • Angle of the cutting head can be adjusted very quickly without removing the strap
  • Anti-blocking system ensure it doesn’t get stuck on tough branches
  • Runs fairly quietly although ear defenders are still recommended
  • Robust safety trigger means this would be very unlikely to turn on accidentally

  • Front handle has no rubberised grip which makes it less comfortable to use
  • Becomes far harder to control when extended to full length
  • A battery life indicator would be helpful

The Bosch Universal Hedge Pole 18 Trimmer is the best cordless hedge trimmer on the market. It’s a capable garden tool, with very few flaws, and that’s why I’ve placed it high on my list.

Bosch-Universal-Hedge-Pole-18-review

The first thing to look at is the design. It’s small, and lightweight, and it arrives in two pieces that simply need slotting together. The 430 mm blade is a reasonable length, while the blades have a 16 mm tooth clearance, allowing you to cut through branches up to that size.

I tested it through a couple of thicker branches, and it did manage to chew through them! It comes with a 2.5 aH battery included and, although there’s no charge indicator, it does have a very good battery life. The batteries charge in 60 minutes which is pretty good.

This trimmer is easy to extend and retract, without having to remove the shoulder strap. This means you can adjust the length in seconds, with the maximum length 2.6 m. You can also adjust the angle of the cutting head without removing the strap, and this can be adjusted in a 135° arc.

On that note, the shoulder strap is very good quality. It has a chunky buckle and it’s easy to adjust. There’s also a blade cover included, which is very good quality and easy to put on.

It comes with an electronic anti-blocking system which helps prevent it from getting stuck on tough branches. It can sense when the blades slow down and are going to get stuck. This is a game-changer when mowing some thicker branches, as you’ll know the second you’ve overdone it – with none of the consequences!

At 3.6 kg, this trimmer does get heavy at full extension, even with the shoulder strap. The front handle isn’t the best and has no rubberised grip, which makes it harder to manage at full extension.

All in all, I’d happily recommend this hedge trimmer to anyone after a fairly lightweight and capable tool for domestic hedges.

The Bosch Cordless Hedge Trimmer AHS 50-20 LI has an impressive 40 minute battery life and is, like most Bosch products, designed with ease of use and manageability in mind.

The first thing to note is the weight of this trimmer. At 2.5 kg, it’s one of the lightest on my list, and you can certainly tell. Despite this, it still boasts a decent blade that’s capable of cutting through branches up to 20 mm in diameter. There’s no telescopic function, but the blade is 58 cm, so you’ve still got a decent reach.

It comes with a couple of handy features that aid ease of use. The first is the anti-blocking system, which allows you to cut continuously. If the branch isn’t cut through on the first attempt, the tool changes direction of the blades, which will prevent blockages and allow you to cut uninterrupted.

It is worth mentioning that this doesn’t work on very thick branches, so don’t be fooled into thinking this system allows you to tackle branches above 20 mm thick!

The protector at the tip of the blade allows you to cut safely, while the soft grip on the rear handle and multi-position front handle ensures it can be used for long periods of time with little discomfort.

It comes with a battery included, and this charges in 60 minutes. If you’re going to be trimming for long periods, you could purchase an additional battery. The battery life is more than sufficient for lighter duty work though, at around 50 minutes.

While this hedge trimmer doesn’t have the power for heavy duty work (18 V as opposed to 20 V or 40 V), it is more than capable of neatening up, pruning or shaping most domestic hedges. Provided you don’t try to cut anything too thick, you should find this hedge trimmer exceptionally easy to use and manage.

  • Easy to control which makes it ideal for shaping ornamental hedges
  • Battery life of around 1 hour depending on what you’re doing which is much longer than other models on the market
  • Takes just 50 minutes for the battery to recharge fully
  • Makes light work of most domestic hedges, including tougher branches

  • Made predominantly from plastic parts which can feel a little flimsy

The Einhell Power X-Change 18V Cordless Hedge Trimmer is a quality tool with a good battery included. This German brand has been showcasing high-quality garden tools, and every Einhell tool I’ve used before has been very impressive. Needless to say, I had high expectations!

This hedge trimmer has a 46 cm cutting length, with the 15 mm spaces between the teeth allowing it to cut branches of this diameter. The overall sword length is 52 cm, and with a weight of 2.3 kg, this tool is manageable and easy to control.

One of the best things about Einhell tools is that they have the same battery system. This tool can be powered by any Power X-Change batteries, and the included battery can be used to power any other Einhell tools that run using this same system.

And on that note, the battery life is pretty decent. It has a run time of between 50 minutes and an hour, while it takes just 50 minutes for the battery to fully recharge.

The blades are also worth mentioning. They are made from laser-cut, diamond-ground steel that offers the highest precision and long-lasting sharpness. The result is an ultra-clean cut across branches less than 15 mm thick.

Overall, I’d say this is one of the best cordless hedge trimmers if you have any other Einhell tools and fancy using the same battery system. While it doesn’t have the power and ability as some of the other models I’ve tested, it’s safe, easy to use and manageable, which counts for a lot.

  • 2-in-1 functionality makes this hedge trimmer and grass shear very good value for money
  • Lightweight and very easy to manoeuvre making it ideal for shaping hedges
  • A good tool for thinner branches and neatening up lighter hedges
  • Easy to store thanks to the compact design
  • Battery life is around 30 minutes which should be long enough to prune smaller hedges

  • Catch release to change the blade from trimming to shearing is very stiff and hard to use without a tool
  • Hasn’t got a huge amount of power for thicker branches although this is to be expected

If you need something more than manual shears but something less than a standard size hedge trimmer, the NETTA 2in1 Grass Shear & Hedge Trimmer strikes a happy medium.

I have a lavender bush right outside my front door, and it does a great job of trimming it back so it doesn’t take over my front porch.

NETTA 2in1 Grass Shear & Hedge Trimmer Tested

It doesn’t have quite the power of others I’ve recommended (which is obvious when you look at it!), but it comes with a 7.2 V lithium-ion battery that gives it a run time of 50 minutes. At just 1.3 kg, it’s easily lightweight enough to use for this amount of time.

The battery doesn’t charge particularly fast, around 4 hours. However, the battery life is so good that the charge time isn’t really too much of a worry.

Performance-wise, it does as good a job as it can given the power. Can it cut through thick branches? Not quite. Can it shape smaller hedges and prune thinner branches? Absolutely!

It produces a clean, smart cut every time which makes it ideal for topiary. You can then switch to the grass shear function to neaten up any bits that you’ve missed with your mower.

It’s comfortable to use, and that’s not just because of the weight. There’s an ergonomic handle that’s easy to hold, and there’s also both a two-way switch and safety key. Without the safety key, the tool cannot be started, which means you can leave it out with no worries of it being picked up and played with.

There aren’t many downsides to this little trimmer, other than the obvious lack of power. Some users have reported finding the release to change the blade from trimming to shearing is very stiff and they require a tool, but I didn’t find this from my experience.

All in all, this is a fantastic little tool that is a step up from manual shears, but it’s a fraction of the weight and effort of a standard electric hedge trimmer.

Harry's Smart Buying Tips

  1. Cordless hedge trimmers are usually very lightweight, and allow you to use them wherever you like in the garden. Most have a battery life of between 20 and 45 minutes.
  2. It can help a lot to get a spare battery. This way, one battery can be on charge while you’re working, and you won’t need to cut the job short to wait for it to recharge
  3. The size of the hedge trimmer you buy will depend on the size of your hedge. For smaller hedges, manual shears or a trimmer with a 40 cm blade will suffice. Medium-size hedges require an electric trimmer with a blade of at least 40 cm. If you’re tackling larger hedges, you’ll need a blade of up to 70 cm.
  4. The tooth spacing between cutting teeth is also worth considering. Younger hedges have thinner branches, so a small 15 – 20 mm gap is ideal for those. For thicker branches, you’ll want a bigger cutting gap of at least 30 mm.

How to Choose the Best Cordless Hedge Trimmer

For the novice gardener, hedge trimming can feel slightly overwhelming. However, cordless models are specifically designed for domestic use, and are usually very lightweight.

There’s a huge range of cordless hedge trimmers on the market, and finding the right one for you can be tricky.

Here’s some information to help you find the best cordless hedge trimmer for your garden.

READ NEXT: The UK’s Best Hedge Trimmers

Consider the Size of Your Hedges

Small / Short Hedge

If you’ve got a small hedge and you don’t mind a bit of manual labour, you could opt for a simple pair of shears. These are ideal for quick and small jobs, but if you’re trying to trim an entire hedge or do any shaping, you’ll need a mechanical hedge trimmer.

Handheld shears can be used to prune ornamental bushes, but they are not large enough for full hedge trimming.

You could instead opt for an electric hedge trimmer with a blade of around 30 – 40 cm long. Look for trimmers with a gap between the blades of around 15 – 20 mm.

Large / Tall Hedges

For large hedges, you’ll want an electric hedge trimmer with a blade length of 45 cm+. Some models will come with 70 cm blades, which can be worth considering.

The longer the blades, the more hedge you can cut in one pass. If opting for a longer blade, you may need to buy a petrol hedge trimmer, which can be higher maintenance, more expensive and heavier.

If you’ve got tall hedges, you could opt for a telescopic hedge trimmer.

You should also consider the hedge type. The size of branches will vary depending on the hedge and its age. Younger hedges have thinner branches, so a large blade gap isn’t so important. More mature hedges have thicker branches and will require a blade gap of 30 mm+.

What to Look for When Buying a Cordless Hedge Trimmer

Weight and Comfort

Arguably the most important thing to think about is whether the hedge trimmer is comfortable for you to use, especially if you’re going to be holding it for a long time. The heavier the hedge trimmer, the greater the importance of a good quality shoulder strap. This will allow the weight of the hedge trimmer to be evenly distributed across your body.

It’s paramount that you are able to control your hedge trimmer at all times, even if it means getting a smaller one and spending longer on the job. An unwieldy hedge trimmer can be very dangerous.

Cordless models tend to be the lightest of the bunch. I’ve listed models around 1.5 kg up to 5 kg, and those extra kg can make a huge difference!

Battery Life

Another factor that can limit you, as well as the weight of your hedge trimmer, is the battery life. While cordless hedge trimmers offer a lot of benefits, it’s important that the battery life is adequate for your needs.

Most cordless models have a battery life ranging from around 20 to 40 minutes. If your hedge trimmer has a smaller battery, you could purchase two. This way, you can have one charging and swap them out when one runs out of juice.

If you’ve just got the one battery, the charge time is also worth considering. If your battery takes just 30 minutes to charge, you could have a coffee break and get back to it! If the battery takes hours and hours to charge from flat, your work is going to be very interrupted.

Cordless Hedge Trimmer FAQs

Cordless hedge trimmers, like petrol powered trimmers, will need to be sharpened. Over time, the blades can become dull which will make it harder to achieve a clean cut. This can damage both your tools, and the hedge you are cutting.

You should sharpen the blades of your hedge trimmer at least once a year, more if you are using it very regularly.

READ NEXT: How to Sharpen Hedge Trimmers

This depends on what you are trying to achieve. A higher voltage means the hedge trimmer will have more power, likely enabling you to cut through thicker branches and twigs. Remember that the diameter of what you are able to cut will still depend on the size of the gaps between the blades, as well as the voltage.

If however, you have very light hedges, a lower voltage hedge trimmer might suit you better. These are lighter and more affordable.

Bosch is a household name when it comes to gardening tools, and for good reason!

Bosch has a range of hedge trimmers that are specifically designed for amateur gardeners. They are usually designed with both weight and ease of use in mind.

They often come with a battery which can be used for other Bosch tools, saving you money if you own multiple tools.

Most cordless hedge trimmers will come with a battery that lasts between 20 and 40 minutes. 20 minutes can be frustratingly short, while many users may not be able to use a hedge trimmer for 40 minutes due to the weight.
