🌿 Clive’s Tips for a Stunning Front Yard

After years of digging, planting, and more re-doing than I’d like to admit, here are a few of my go-to tips for making shrubs work hard in your front yard—without it becoming a full-time job!

1. Mix Evergreens with Seasonal Stars

Evergreens give you structure and colour all year round, but don’t forget to mix in a few flowering or deciduous varieties for those lovely seasonal bursts. It keeps your garden feeling alive and interesting across the year.

2. Think About Height and Shape

Taller shrubs can frame your doorway or create privacy, while lower-growing varieties are perfect for neat borders or under windows. Try to vary height and shape—it gives the garden more character and flow.

3. Group in Threes (or Fives!)

Planting in odd numbers tends to look more natural and balanced. If you’re going for a softer, more organic feel, avoid overly symmetrical rows.

4. Low Maintenance? Check Before You Plant!

Some shrubs practically take care of themselves. Others—well, let’s just say they like a bit of pampering. Always check how much pruning, feeding, and watering a shrub needs before you pop it in the ground.

5. Match to Your Conditions

Take a moment to figure out what your front garden offers—full sun, part shade, dry soil, clay, etc. The right shrub in the right place will always outperform something that’s struggling to survive.

6. Leave Room to Grow

It’s tempting to plant things close together for an instant impact, but shrubs need room to spread. Give them a bit of breathing space now, and you’ll thank yourself in a year or two!

With the right mix of shrubs and a bit of planning, your front yard can become a real head-turner—welcoming, tidy, and full of personality. And the best bit? Once they’re in and settled, they’ll just keep getting better with time.
