Ninebark is one of the toughest shrubs I’ve ever grown, which is exactly why I like recommending it. Its rich burgundy foliage creates wonderful contrast throughout autumn, whilst the peeling bark provides additional texture during winter.

11. Tiger Eyes Sumac for Brilliant Golden Autumn Leaves
Tiger Eyes Sumac produces one of the brightest autumn displays you’ll find. I love how the soft golden foliage gradually changes through orange before finishing with rich scarlet tones.
It instantly brightens any front garden landscape whilst needing very little maintenance beyond occasional shaping.
12. Japanese Barberry for Compact Autumn Colour
Where it isn’t considered invasive and local regulations allow it, Japanese Barberry is a fantastic shrub for adding compact structure and bold autumn colour.
I like using it in smaller gardens where space is limited because it delivers impressive crimson foliage without becoming overwhelming.
13. Abelia for Colour That Lasts into Autumn
Abelia offers far more than just attractive flowers. As temperatures cool, the glossy foliage develops lovely bronze and purple tones that extend the season of interest well beyond summer.

14. Spiraea for Warm Shades of Red and Orange
