Cylinder Lawn Mower Buyer’s Guide
A cylinder lawn mower has blades that spin around, cutting the grass using a shearing action. This leads to a clean cut and allows grass to be cut very short without a loss of quality. Cylinder mowers are best suited to flat, uniform and stone-free lawns, without a lot of long or damp grass.
Not sure what to look for when it comes to cylinder lawn mowers? Check out this buyer’s guide.
Type of Mower
There are 3 types of cylinder mowers; push mowers, self-propelled petrol mowers and pulled mowers. Push mowers are cheaper, easy to maintain and perfect for small lawns, although they can be tiring to use for long periods of time.
Self-propelled or fuel powered mowers are more expensive and costly to maintain. They make mowing the lawn far easier thanks to the massive amounts of power. Mowers powered by petrol can be noisy, and there’s additional fuel costs to consider.
Finally, there are pulled mowers. These are generally used for professional establishments like golf courses or football pitches, pulled behind a tractor to get large sections of grass mown quickly.
Cutting Width
A wide mower will have your lawn cut quicker and more efficiently, but they can be harder to use if your lawn has obstacles in the way such as trees or flower beds. For large, rectangular gardens, a bigger cutting width is a good option.
Awkwardly shaped gardens with trees and flower beds will benefit from a mower with a smaller cutting width. These are more nimble, able to nip around obstacles. While mowing the lawn will take longer, it’s easier to get the lawn looking neat.
Cutting Height
Your cylinder mower will come with various cutting height options, and this should be easy for you to adjust. Advanced mowers will have a wide range of cutting height options, while more basic mowers will just have 2 or 3.
Ease of Manoeuvrability
For added ease of use, your mower should be easy to move both in and out of storage. Go for a lightweight mower with transportation wheels and folding handles if you think you may struggle.
Grass Collection
Most mowers will come with a grass bag to collect your cut grass. A large grass bag will need less frequent emptying. Some mowers may have a mulching option, where cut grass is mulched and deposited back onto the lawn. Mulching is a great way to keep your lawn healthy, whilst reducing mowing time. Advanced mowers may come with both grass collection options.
