The Hayter Harrier 41 Autodrive Variable-Speed Rear-Roller Lawnmower tops my list as the best lawn mower for professional use. It’s been designed for heavy-duty mowing for long periods of time, delivering a professional-grade cut no matter what the time of year.
The build of this mower is practically faultless. There’s heavy duty wheels with handlebar supports and a front bumper to protect it against knocks. There’s also a wash down feature, ensuring it’s easy to clean at the end of a long day’s mowing. The cast aluminium cutter deck boasts lightweight strength and rust resistance, complete with a lifetime warranty.
Powered by a Briggs & Stratton 625E-series engine and a 190 cc 4-stroke motor, this lawn mower has been built to tackle the toughest of grass conditions. It runs fairly economically, while the noise muffler ensures it runs quieter than you might expect from a tool of this size.
It has a 52 cm cutting width and 7 different cutting height options. This allows it to be used year-round for a range of grass lengths. There’s a 60 L grass collection box with collapsible mesh sides.
Like all professional lawn mowers should be, this model is self propelled. It has a variable-speed Autodrive system. The speed can be altered, so when you’re mowing around flower beds or trees, you can maintain control. The speed adjustability will also help you to navigate different terrains and grass lengths.
It’s ideal for areas that require a super smart cut, as there’s a rear roller that’ll produce neat stripes. The finish is always clean, with all clippings neatly collected off the lawn. It also cuts virtually flush against fence lines and edges, so there’s no need to go over the edges with a strimmer.
One of the best things about this mower is that it’s very easy to assemble. All you need to do is unfold the handle and tighten the screws, which is an unexpected surprise given the size of the machine.
All in all, I’d happily recommend this mower as the best professional lawn mower on the market. It has everything you’d need from a professional mower, with a body that’ll certainly stand up to day-in, day-out use.

2. Toro Professional 22207 HDX Turfmaster Lawnmower
Best commercial lawn mower
- Body is made from aluminium and steel which allows it to stand up to rigorous use
- Grass bag has a suction feature which allows for more efficient collection of clippings, ideal for lawns which require a neat finish
- For more relaxed lawns, the cuttings can be discharged from the side chute
- 76 cm cutting width makes this model ideal for large open stretches of lawn
- Variable speed allows you to move quicker across open areas, before slowing down to tackle areas around trees or flower beds
- Has an 88 L grass collector so you can work in large areas without having to stop and empty
- With a 76 cm cutting width, it’s not hugely manoeuvrable around trees, beds or through narrow areas

Made from aluminium and steel, the Toro Professional 22207 HDX Turfmaster Lawn Mower has been built to last. It’s also one of the more expensive models on my list, although its quality and list of features ensure you certainly get what you pay for.
This mower has, like all the mowers I’ve recommended, been designed for commercial use. This specific model is ideal for tougher cutting conditions, areas that have been left to overgrow or long, damp grass. It has a premium quality Kawasaki 179 cc engine, and a recoil stat.
It also has a range of cutting heights, with the shortest 38 mm and the longest 127 mm. These go up in 13 mm increments, so you’ve got a range of options when it comes to the cutting heights.
The 76 cm cutting width makes this lawn mower incredibly efficient across large open spaces of lawn, while the variable speed means you can slow down if you require a little more control, for instance when navigating trees, benches or flower beds. The fastest mowing speed is 4.1mph, which I actually found a little too fast for my liking.
The 88 L grass collection bag ensures you won’t need to stop and empty very often, but the clippings can also be discharged if you don’t mind a less formal finish. There’s a side chute, although unfortunately no mulching function. If you require a very neat finish, the grass box is very handy as it actually ‘sucks’ the clippings up.
At 75 kg, this mower is very heavy. However, it has commercial grade polymer wheels with durable rubber tyres that make it easy to transport this mower across smooth surfaces.
All in all, it is clear that this mower has been designed for commercial spaces, and the build quality is very impressive. The side chute means you won’t need to spot mid-mow to dispose of the clippings.

3. Honda HRH536QX Professional Rear Roller Rotary Mower

- Reliable and durable build means this mower is ideal for heavy duty contracting work
- Hard working self-propulsion system drives the mower forward at a steady speed to ensure the finish is neat and even
- Produces a smart, classic striped finish thanks to the rear roller
- Offers a range of cutting heights from 14 mm to 52 mm
- This mower is very heavy at 59 kg. Because of this it may not be suitable for areas with steep inclines

Lawn mowers with a rear roller are ideal for football pitches, golf greens and other public spaces where a super smart finish is required. The Honda HRH536QX Professional Rear Roller Rotary Mower is a rotary mower that delivers a stunning striped finish. It’s been designed for larger commercial areas.
It’s been built to be as durable and reliable as possible, making it ideal for heavy-duty contracting work. The cast aluminium cutting deck is tough but lightweight, while the front bumper, heavy gauge handlebars and reinforced cutting deck help to protect the mower from damage or wear and tear. With a 53 cm cutting width, it’s clear that it’s been designed for wide, open stretches.
It has a 4-stroke engine and it’s self propelled, moving at a steady speed to ensure you can mow as evenly and efficiently as possible. The rear roller stabilises the machine, allowing you ample control around flower beds or borders. There’s 5 cutting heights to choose from, ranging from 14 mm to 52 mm, and the heights can be adjusted using a simple lever.
There’s an 83 L grass bag (although no mulching function), so you can move around large spaces without having to spot and empty too often.
One handy feature is that you are able to disengage the cutting blade without having to switch off the engine. This allows you to move across gravel or concrete to a new spot, without needing to restart the mower.
There’s not much to dislike about this mower. It’s worth noting that at 59 kg, so a lot heavier than other petrol powered models on the market. For a professional-grade lawn mower however, you would expect it to weigh more.
If you’re after a professional-grade mower for large areas, this Honda model is well worth considering.

4. Masport Olympic 500 Petrol Cylinder Lawn Mower
Best professional cylinder lawn mower
- Produces a smart striped finish so it’s a great option for bowling greens, golf greens and other public areas
- Designed to give years of services with minimal maintenance required, has a long lasting steel chassis
- Centrifugal clutch allows you to disengage the cutting cylinder with the engine still running, allowing you to easily move to another section of grass
- Cuts as low as 7 mm so it’s ideal for areas that require an extremely short finish
- At 68 kg, this mower is one of the heaviest on my list and wouldn’t be suitable for areas with inclines
- Won’t be suitable for bumpy or uneven lawns

Producing a smart, striped finish, the Masport Olympic 500 Petrol Cylinder Lawn Mower is another top contender for the best professional lawn mower.
This cylinder mower has been built to provide years of service, and the price certainly reflects this. It’s been designed for day-in, day-out use, and would be my number one choice for bowling greens, golf greens and grass tennis courts.
As a cylinder mower, this mower has been built for extremely low cutting heights, and it provides a neater cut than that of rotary models. It uses a scissor-like action that produces a neater finish, while you’ll also achieve that lovely striped effect.
It hasn’t been built for enormous spaces, the focus instead on a precise, manicured cut. The rear roller produces a Wimbledon stripe effect, while it can achieve cutting heights as low as 7 mm. That’s close enough for a bowling green finish.
One thing to note about cylinder mowers is that they aren’t suitable for bumpy or uneven lawns, nor long grass. This mower is best for maintaining public areas that are already well manicured, whereas those that have been left to get overgrown should first be cut using a rotary mower.
It comes with a 70 L grass box, as well as the ability to disengage the cutting cylinder with the engine still running. This allows you to easily move to another section of grass, without having to restart the mower.
Overall, this mower can’t really be beaten when it comes to the cut finish. While not designed for long or wet grass, it does a fantastic job on areas that require a pristine finish.

- Runs far quieter than petrol models with a similar amount of power, which makes it a good option for public areas or commercial gardens
- Self propelled function can be turned off, so you can get around obstacles or up and down slopes at a slower speed
- Recharges in just 30 minutes which makes it ideal for commercial areas where a quick recharge is important

Not all professional lawn mowers have to be petrol powered, and the EGO LM1903E-SP 47 cm Self Propelled Cordless Mower is proof that the best professional lawn mowers can in fact be cordless machines.
This electric lawn mower has been designed with power and durability in mind. It comes with an ultra strong battery and a rapid charger, so when you run out of juice you’ve only got 30 minutes before you can start again.
It also boasts an impressive build quality. There’s a 47 cm metal cutting system, with height adjustments ranging from 25 cm to 80 cm. It’s been designed for areas up to 800 sqm in size, so it’s ideal for golf greens, football pitches or other smaller commercial areas. The deck is made from hard polymer to guarantee a long lifespan.
Like all professional mowers should be, this model is self propelled and has a variable cutting speed. When you want more control moving around obstacles, the speed can be slowed. For large open stretches, increase the speed to mow more efficiently. The self propelled function can be turned off if needed.
If you’re thinking this mower perhaps doesn’t have the power of petrol powered mowers, think again! This model easily surpasses the torque of a number of petrol powered mowers on the market, and it’s just as capable of mowing long and wet grass. Given the size and power, I expected it to be loud. However, I was pleasantly surprised that it runs very quietly, so it’s a good option for public gardens.
It comes with a 55 L grass bag which is a good size given the area it’s been designed for (800sqm). There’s also LED headlights so if you do find yourself mowing into the night, you’ll be able to see clearly where you’re going.
All in all, this mower more than stands up to its petrol powered competitors. It’s been designed for smaller commercial areas and runs quietly enough to use in areas such as care homes or public gardens.

How to Choose the Best Professional Lawn Mower
What to Look for in a Professional Lawn Mower
If you’re looking for a professional lawn mower, your priorities will be different to those after a mower that only needs to be used once or twice a week.
Whether you are a professional gardener with a number of lawns to cut, or you’re simply after the best mower on the market for large spaces, there’s a huge number of commercial lawn mowers on the market that are designed specifically for heavy duty use.Â
Let’s take a look at the most important features to look out for in a professional lawn mower.Â
The Importance of Self Propulsion
If you’re going to be mowing for long periods of time, it’s essential that your mower is self propelled. Most commercial lawn mowers are self propelled with a range of speed options. This allows you to move faster across wide open areas, slowing down when you reach corners, trees or flower beds.Â

How Much Power Do You Need?Â
Another thing to consider is how much power you’ll need. Most of the lawn mowers I have tested and recommended are petrol powered, while one model is cordless electric.Â
Most commercial-grade lawn mowers use petrol. These have more power, and are able to tackle steeper slopes without engine damage.Â
If you are considering an cordless electric model, you’ll need to think about the battery life and recharge time. Those with a rapid recharge time can be suitable for commercial areas, but they are unlikely to have the same power as petrol powered models.Â
Why a Wider Cutting Width is Best
Professional grade lawn mowers tend to have a wider cutting width. This is because they are designed for larger areas, and a wider cutting width will mean you can cover the same size area in fewer passes.Â
Those designed for large properties can have a cutting width ranging from 50 cm to 80 cm. The downside of a very wide cutting width is that navigating in tighter areas, such as around trees and flower beds, can be tougher.Â
Grass Collection Capacity
In public spaces you’ll be more likely to collect the grass clippings than deposit them back onto the lawn. This leads to an overall neater finish.
If you’re mowing private gardens, you may be able to deposit the clippings back onto the lawn or mulch them.Â
Either way, the size of the grass collection box is worth considering. The smaller the box, the more frequently you’ll have to stop and empty it.Â
Safety Features
Arguably the most important thing to consider when it comes to professional lawn mowers is the safety features. Commercial-grade lawn mowers are seriously powerful and heavy pieces of machinery, so it’s essential that they are well maintained and safe to operate.Â
Most premium lawn mowers have a brake feature that allows you to stop the blades from running without cutting the power. This allows you to easily turn the mower around or move to another patch of grass without having to restart the mower. It also allows you to rapidly disengage the blades if you run over something.Â
Another essential safety feature is a parking brake. This will cause the mower to stop if the clutch is released, so you won’t lose the mower on steep hills.Â
Finally, ensure you can adequately control the mower. Some can reach a top speed of over 4 mph, which will be too fast for some users. Ensure your mower has a range of speed options so you can maintain control at all times.Â
FAQs
What type of lawn mower do professionals use?
Lawn mowers for professional use are designed for daily use, and they are usually either petrol powered or ride on mowers.
Professional lawn mowers have a much higher blade tip speed and torque rating, meaning they are able to mow much faster than regular mowers.
What is considered a commercial lawn mower?
Commercial lawn mowers are larger, more powerful lawn mowers, often equipped with a 2-cylinder engine as opposed to a 4-cylinder engine. They can be either walk-behind mowers, riding lawn mowers or zero turn mowers, and they are much more expensive than residential lawn mowers.Â
Commercial mowers have been designed to withstand non-stop and heavy mowing. As a result, they have to last a lot longer than residential mowers.
How many years does a commercial lawn mower last?
Commercial mowers are made to mow for long periods of time, and it’s important that they stand the test of time. Mower lifespans are usually measured in hours, as opposed to years.Â
Commercial mowers have a life expectancy of around 2000 – 2500 hours. This is vastly different to residential lawn mowers, which can last around 450 – 500 hours.Â
What lawn mowers are used at Wimbledon?
If you’re wanting a lawn to rival Wimbledon’s Centre Court, you’re not the only one! According to Forbes, all Wimbledon courts are mown each morning with a Toro cylinder mower, with the white lines repainted. Debris is removed from the courts on the middle Sunday, where there is no play.Â
However, maintaining the grass at Wimbledon is anything but simple! Care is provided to the grass year-round, with a millimetre taken off the height of the grass every two weeks from March.Â
