For the price you pay, the Flymo EasiMow 300R is well worth it and one of the best budget electric lawn mowers on the market. Except for the built-in rear roller (which I didn’t think worked at all), all the features performed well – particularly the close edge cutting abilities.

Since the Flymo EasiMow 300R is lightweight and easy to turn in tight spaces, it’s the ideal choice for anyone who needs to carry the lawnmower through the house to cut grass in the front garden.

Even though it didn’t always roll smoothly across the lawn when cutting, I’d buy the Flymo EasiMow 300R for its close edge-cutting abilities alone. I could easily get rid of my strimmer and half the time I spend cutting my grass by using this EasiMow 300R.

Best known for its close edge-cutting abilities and integrated rear roller, the Flymo EasiMow 300R is a nifty lawnmower designed for smaller gardens. With its bold claims, I wanted to see just how well these features really work on the average lawn. Let’s see how it did when put to the test.

How I Tested

Because the Flymo EasiMow 300R is designed for smaller lawns and claims to have precise edge-cutting abilities, I wanted to put this to the ultimate test – seeing whether it could achieve a close cut around the raised sleepers and tight corners in my garden.

On a smaller area of regularly-cut grass, I gave it a run for its money on the highest setting to see whether it would achieve the promised striped pattern with its integrated rear roller.

Even though the Flymo EasiMow 300R is marketed towards smaller lawns, I also wanted to see how far the 30-litre grass box would get me, and how long it would take to mow the area with a 30 cm cutting width.

Assembly Ease

5

Flymo-EasiMow-300R-Electric-Lawn-Mower-Review-assembly

Assembling the Flymo EasiMow 300R was easy enough. There are only a few parts that need to be put together. First, you need to install both handles before clipping the grass box together – which came in three separate parts.

I was pleasantly surprised that the instruction manual was A4 in size. Most manuals are A5 and can be harder to read, especially when it comes to viewing the pictures. Not only were the images bigger than most other lawnmower manuals, but they were also very clear. One step was described per image, which was a welcome factor.

Everything fitted together nice and easy. When it comes to the handles, they simply screw together with a twist cap, so there’s no need to use a screwdriver or any other tools. On the left side, the caps were different from the right. This makes it possible to wrap the cable around the left-hand side after use, which is a handy feature.

The only downside when installing the handles was that the top bars were hard to do alone. There’s no easy way to rest the handles upright before you screw them in, so you have to balance them while tightening the caps. I managed to do this by myself, but having two people would be easier and quicker.

In total, unboxing, reading the instruction manual and assembling took me around 30 minutes. If there are two people involved, this could be done much quicker.

Design

When it comes to the design of the Flymo EasiMow 300R, it has everything you’d expect from the Flymo brand. The lower deck is bright orange and shiny. The wheels are jet-black while the grass box and handlebars are a dark grey colour, which is a great contrast to the orange.

In its box, the lawnmower contained a fair amount of plastic packaging on the handlebars, engine cover and around the accessory pack.

My only dismay with the design relates to the grass box. It’s made of plastic, which was easy to clean after use with a quick brush; however, I noticed a few scratches had appeared on it after just one use. Since I didn’t do anything to cause the scratches, I assume this was just a design flaw.

This made me think that storing the lawnmower and grass box in your shed could easily scratch it up. A quick search online showed that many other purchasers reported the same thing about the grass box being scratched on arrival. Even though this clearly isn’t ideal, I’m not too concerned since it’s just a lawnmower.

Another handy design feature is the built-in hooks that you can wrap the wire around after use. The plug socket even has a clip you can use to secure it to the wire. It’s a simple thing, but not all lawnmowers provide these.

However, I found a possible design flaw here. Even though the manufacturers mention you can fold away the handlebars to achieve compact storage, I couldn’t see how to do this when the wire was wrapped around it. Maybe it’s possible, but it certainly isn’t obvious.

The final design element worth mentioning is its ambidextrous start lever. To operate the mower, you simply pull the lever that spans across the entire top handlebar, making it perfect for left or right-handed use.

Power

3.5

Flymo-EasiMow-300R-Electric-Lawn-Mower-Review-power

Since the Flymo EasiMow 300R is equipped with a 1000 W motor engine, it’s not the most powerful lawnmower you’ll find on the market. However, I thought it still did a decent job on my lawn using the highest cut setting. Even though my grass isn’t thick or coarse, I didn’t have to go over a single patch more than once.

However, I did find that the lawnmower got stuck in a few places and needed a good shove to propel it forwards. Since my lawn is considerably flat with little to no bumps, I think it could’ve just been the engine power not getting through the grass quickly enough.

To avoid this, I walked slower for the rest of the cut and applied quite a hard pressure when pushing. If you’re cutting tall grass, the 1000 W engine may not be enough to get through it. The ideal cutting conditions for this mower seem to be well-manicured lawns that aren’t dense or heavy with growth.

On the plus side, the lower power engine meant that it wasn’t very loud. My cat always runs out of the garden when I’m mowing the lawn, but it was subtle enough that even she stuck around.

Performance

4.5

Flymo-EasiMow-300R-Electric-Lawn-Mower-Review-performance

In terms of performance, the Flymo EasiMow 300R had no trouble trimming a small area of grass that had low-to-medium growth. There are 3 cutting heights available and I used the highest setting of 60 mm.

Personally, I didn’t think this setting was high enough for cutting a lawn with low-to-medium growth, since it almost scalped it. When using this lawnmower, I’d suggest waiting until your grass has medium growth instead to help protect your lawn over time.

Even though the cut was low by my standards, it was clean and even.

Since the two most marketed features of this lawnmower are its close edge-cutting abilities and built-in rear roller, these were the features I wanted to focus on the most.

When lining up the Flymo EasiMow 300R to cut around the tightest area of my lawn, bordered by raised wooden sleepers, it didn’t look like it was going to line up at all. However, the results were outstanding! I’ve never seen a lawnmower cut so near to these raised borders. It was such a close shave that I didn’t even need to use the strimmer afterwards.

Unfortunately, my excitement died down when I tested the built-in rear roller. While it claims to create a striped pattern on your lawn, I couldn’t see anything. Even when I looked from the window upstairs, there were no stripes to be seen.

Manoeuvrability

5

With a weight of just 8.4 kg, the Flymo EasiMow 300R is one of the lightest lawnmowers on the market. Its small, light design is one of the reasons why the manufacturers market this mower as being ideal for smaller gardens.

When put to the test, to see how it fared when twisting and turning around my raised sleepers and flowerbeds, it passed with flying colours. The lightweight design and compact deck made it easy to achieve a small turning circle. I could easily spin and lift it in a tight space.

However, the downside to the manoeuvrability appeared when I was just cutting up and down like normal. It seemed to struggle with quite a few patches and I couldn’t do one run without it getting stuck.

The compact design and large carry handle in the centre of the mower deck also made it easy to carry back to the shed. The carry handle even has a few ridges to help improve your grip.

Flymo-EasiMow-300R-Electric-Lawn-Mower-Review-features

The Flymo EasiMow 300R has an impressive list of features, namely its close edge-cutting abilities, built-in rear roller, 3-point range of cutting heights (from 20 – 60 mm), a 30-litre grass box, 10 m cable and 30 cm cutting width.

I hit my first hurdle when figuring out how to adjust the cutting height. I thought I’d be able to do this without needing to check the instruction manual. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.

To adjust the cutting height, you have to turn the lawnmower upside down. Then you have to pull firmly on both wheels to lift it out of the springs and move it to the higher or lower setting.

This was not easy to do alone. It was tricky and very stiff to pull at the wheels. I had to use my foot to keep the lawnmower on the ground while I pulled. Since the lawnmower was brand new, the stiffness may ease up over time. But it still wasn’t the easiest height-adjusting design I’ve come across.

Safety

3.5

Flymo-EasiMow-300R-Electric-Lawn-Mower-Review-safety

Overall, the Flymo EasiMow 300R was relatively safe. Cable clips are provided to tightly secure the dangly bits of wire to the handlebars. The manual doesn’t say where to pin the clips, but I put mine on the bottom part of the handle, since I thought that was best.

To turn the lawnmower on, you press a button in the middle of the handle and pull the lever towards you. The button was firm, so it wouldn’t be easy to turn it on by accident.

The only downside to the safety of this lawnmower was the means to adjust the cutting height. Since the blade is fully exposed when you do this, it didn’t feel like a very safe method.

Plus, if you need to adjust the cutting height midway through mowing, you need to turn the lawnmower off at the plug, wait until the blade comes to a complete stop and then flip it over to pull the wheels. It didn’t just feel unsafe, it was an inconvenience too.

Value for Money

5

At the more affordable end of the scale, the Flymo EasiMow 300R is a fair price for the features you get. I think it provides great value for money for anyone with a smaller lawn that needs a universal set of features.

With how effectively the close-edge mowing works, you shouldn’t need to purchase a strimmer along with this lawnmower, which makes it even better value.

Given its power, and the range of cutting heights, you could purchase this lawnmower for medium-sized lawns as well as small ones. However, you’d need to make a few trips while mowing to empty the grass box.

Overall

4.3

For the price you pay, the Flymo EasiMow 300R is well worth it and one of the best budget electric lawn mowers on the market. Except for the built-in rear roller (which I didn’t think worked at all), all the features performed well – particularly the close edge cutting abilities.
