Types of Pond Treatment
There’s two main types of pond treatment; bacterial and algae control.

It’s important that your pond treatment can treat your entire pond, and most pond treatment bottles will display how many litres they are able to treat.
The treatments I’ve recommended can treat between 9000L and 20,000L. If you have a larger pond, you’ll need to purchase additional treatment.
If you aren’t going to use all your pond treatment at once, take a look at the shelf life to ensure you can store your treatment until you next need it.
Ease of Use
Contrary to believe, there’s no need to empty your entire pond to treat it. Looking after your pond is a whole lot easier than that!
However, it’s still important that your treatment is easy to use, especially because they are filled with lots of chemicals. All the treatments I’ve recommended are very easy to use, while some have a dosage chamber so you’ll be able to administer the correct amount for the size of your pond.
Temperature Range
If your pond treatment contains bacteria, the temperature range is important. Not all bacteria work in all temperatures, and some treatment may need a warmer or cooler pond.
The treatments I have recommended generally have a wide temperature range which makes them suitable for most garden ponds in a range of weather conditions.

How do you apply water treatment to your pond?
Different pond water treatments work in different ways so be sure to follow the instructions that come with you product.
To use Pond Klear you should follow these instructions.
- Calculate the volume of your pond so you know how much treatment to use
- Clean out filters
- Add 25ml (per 1,136 litres) to a bucket of pond water
- Stir and distribute evenly in pond
Pond treatments may take up to 6-8 weeks to completely clear badly affected ponds. Some treatments require two doses at intervals so do check the instructions that come with your product. The Evolution Aqua Pure Pond treatment should be added to your pond filter.
Can you put too much bacteria in a pond?
It’s possible to have too much of a good thing, but this doesn’t appear to be the case when it comes to beneficial bacteria.
While you don’t want to add too much treatment to your pond, the biggest risk is generally that it’s a waste of money. If your pond has too much bacteria, the weaker bacteria will die and the population will reduce meaning you’ll require more treatment than you would otherwise.
