Gochange 3-28mm Mini Pipe Cutter Review

With an impressive range of tools, accessories and test equipment, Gochange have made a useful little pipe cutter that you can throw in your tool kit and use to make quality cuts on soft metal pipes without breaking the bank.

It’s a sturdy little stainless-steel tool that has a surprisingly good set of rollers for the price and is well machined. You have to make sure that you tighten the adjustment knob as you cut the pipe, but as long as you learn the technique you should be able to cut pipes accurately and quickly.

Rated for cutting stainless steel, aluminium copper and water-cooling pipe, the Gochange mini pipe cutter might be small, but it’s mighty. We think it’s one of the best copper pipe cutters that you can get for the money.

Ridgid 29963 Model 35S Stainless Steel Tubing Cutter Review

The Ridgid 29963 Model 35S is the best pipe cutter because the build quality is second to none, and it can easily cut even short lengths of stainless-steel pipe. With a history dating back to 1923, US tool brand Ridgid know a thing or two about making the best pipe cutter tool around.

It’s obvious that this is a premium quality, professional level cutter. The casting of the cutter body is precise, and it uses a unique set of 12 bearings that feed the pipe completely straight while making the cut. The knob used to change the diameter is solid and easy to handle and makes cutting any size of pipe a doddle.

Cutting stainless steel pipe is notoriously difficult- it’s hard and needs specialist tools to cut properly, so it’s a good thing that Ridgid came up with the best pipe cutter tool in the form of the 35S. The unbeatable workmanship and lifetime guarantee make this our favourite pipe cutter yet.

Ridgid 32573 Model 118 2-in-1 Close Quarters Autofeed Cutter Review

Seeing as Ridgid are one of the leading plumbing tool companies in the world, it makes sense that they’re on our list more than once. They consistently make the best pipe cutters for professionals and keen DIYers that we’ve ever seen, so we were excited to get our hands on the Model 118.

As you would expect, this clever pipe cutter makes short work of copper, aluminium and brass pipes alike, and because it’s an auto-feed model you don’t need to keep tightening the adjuster to cut through all the way.

The cutting wheel is super-hardened and will last for ages, but when it does wear out you can simply swap it for the spare wheel in the knob. But what makes this the best pipe cutter for the professional plumber is the removable ratcheting handle- you can get into the tightest spaces and still apply some serious torque to hidden pipes.

Rothenberger 70015 Minimax Tube Cutter Review

German tool brand Rothenberger have been making excellent pipe tools since 1947, and the Minimax tube cutter is another great tool in their inventory. The first thing you’ll notice is how compact and simple it is while being well-made it should be a tool that lasts for a long time.

Because it’s such a compact little pipe cutter, you’ll be able to get it into the tightest of spaces and even keep it in your pocket when it’s not in use. That’s not to say it’s a flimsy bit of kit- it’s solidly constructed throughout with steel guide rollers and an ergonomic adjustment handle.

The quality of the cut it makes is impressive, and you can cut close to flared sections of soft metal pipes with the clever cut-out sections on the rollers. It’s the small details like this that make the Mini Max the best copper pipe cutter that we’ve reviewed so far.

Draper Expert 10580 Tubing Cutter Review

British tool giants Draper have been making some of the best DIY and professional level tools and equipment since 1919. We’re no stranger to the Draper Expert range, so we knew what we were in for with the 10580 tubing cutter.

With a diecast body and hardened steel cutting wheel, it’s a premium product worthy of the Expert name. We like the hefty feel of this cutter, it’s robust and solid even if it’s not the smallest pipe cutter we’ve come across. It has good weight to it that helps when cutting copper pipes.

There’s a special function on this tool that we think makes it the best pipe cutter for when you’re on the job though, it’s the fold-out reamer tool. Even the best pipe cutting tool can leave a few burrs, so having a decent reamer on hand is a handy extra to have.

Pipe Cutter (Metal Pipes) Buyer’s Guide

Cutting pipes accurately is an essential part of good plumbing and other DIY projects. If you want to consistently make straight cuts without burrs, you’ll need the best copper pipe cutter you can find.

Materials they can cut

Most pipes in your home will be made from copper, but you might come across aluminium alloy, brass and other soft metals. You can tackle these with a normal pipe cutter, but if you need to cut stainless-steel, you’ll need a dedicated stainless-steel pipe cutter such as the Ridgid Model 35S.

Types of cutter

If you’re cutting pipes on a workbench you don’t need to worry about access but getting at pipes in tight spots call for mini-sized pipe cutters. Some, like the Ridgid Model 118, come with a detachable ratcheting handle that helps you cut out pipes with limited access.

Construction

The best pipe cutters have diecast bodies for strength, and high carbon steel cutting wheels for making clean cuts in soft or hard metals that won’t rust out on you. Quality steel rollers help grip the pipe and keep the cut running straight around its edge, unless you go for the premium options that replace wheels with steel bearings.

How they work

All the best pipe cutter tools work in a similar way- you grip the cutter onto the pipe with the adjustment screw, and turn the cutter around the pipe to score a line and cut through the pipe after several revolutions. You have to keep adjusting the screw to keep the blade tight on the pipe, unless you have an auto-feed mechanism like on the Ridgid Model 118.

Special features

All pipe cutters cut through pipe, but the best pipe cutters come with handy extras that make your life just a little bit easier. Cutting through soft materials or even harder materials can leave a burr, or a sharp bit of leftover metal that you need to remove. The Draper Expert 10580 pipe cutter comes with a clever reamer that flips out from the body, and a few of the pipe cutters on our list are supplied with spare wheels.
