The UK's bestCollapsible Laundry Baskets 2022 Review

What To Look For in a Collapsible Laundry Baskets

Plastic and rubber laundry baskets are the most durable options. They’re water-resistant and won’t transfer moisture from wet washing to the floor. They fold down to a thickness of 5 – 10 cm.

Fabric baskets can often fold slightly flatter than plastic baskets. This makes them even more suitable for storing beside a washing machine or under a bed. If you go with a fabric option, make sure the lining has a waterproof coating. A PE or PU plastic coating will stop the basket getting damaged by wet washing.

For one or two-person households, a small 30 L basket will hold one light load of washing. These compact baskets are capable of folding quite compactly, often easily storing away in drawers or cupboards, making them a great option for smaller houses.

For a family of four, you’ll want a laundry basket with a capacity of around 70 L. This will help transport a full load of washing to the line.

I’ve chosen the DOKEHOM XL Laundry Basket as my top recommendation when it comes to collapsible baskets. Despite having a large 72 L capacity, making it suitable for a four-person household, the fabric basket folds down small. It’s made of durable, thick polyester and has a generally smart appearance.

DOKEHOM XL Laundry Basket Review

Whilst having a large laundry basket is undeniably useful, they can take up a lot of space. For this reason, a collapsible option like the DOKEHOM XL Laundry Basket is a versatile choice.

This particular basket is one of the largest featured on this page. It has a 72 L capacity and measures 56 cm tall by 40.5 cm wide. There’s plenty of space for dirty laundry, but it can also be folded down almost flat when not in use – tucking in next to the washing machine or under a bed.

Whilst collapsing it down is a great option when the basket isn’t needed, it has a pleasant appearance that also helps it blend in when filled with clothes. There are several different patterns to choose from, ranging from navy with white stars, to pinstripe, and pink polka dot, and a style can be chosen based on décor, in order for the basket to look at home in most rooms.

It’s well reinforced, made from thick polyester, which means it stands up relatively well on its own and doesn’t collapse of its own accord. It can be hard to get the creases out of the fabric though, which can bring down the basket’s overall appearance.

The brown leather-look handles are firmly attached with metal rivets making for an easy and comfortable way to move the basket around, even when it’s quite full.

There’s also a cream-coloured lining that has a drawstring top, keeping dirty washing concealed. It also means that other items, like toys or clean clothes, could be stored in the basket without dust getting to them.

All things considered, this is one of the best laundry baskets if you’re looking for something relatively large that will hold a week’s worth of washing. It may be a little expensive for what it is, but you do get a choice of colours and an item that can be easily store away.

Pros

  • Lightweight so easy to move from bedroom to washing machine
  • Inner lining can simply be wiped clean when needed
  • Large capacity - can fit a week’s worth of washing for up to 4 people
  • Drawstring on top conceals dirty laundry from view and stops anything from falling out when carried

Cons

  • Collapses down but bounces back up so needs to be sandwiched into storage to keep it flat
  • Can look creased which brings down the overall appearance

Addis Foldable Laundry Basket Review

The Addis Foldable Laundry Basket is a conventional-looking plastic washing basket that collapses down to a height of 8.5 cm.

It’s made from a combination of plastic and rubber, and the rubber sections facilitate the foldability. When extended, it measures 45 x 61 x 28 cm and can hold 45 L of laundry; this is the equivalent of one large load of washing or a couple of smaller loads. It can therefore fit towels and bed sheets with relative ease.

Of course, as a result of this bigger size and capacity, it does have a larger footprint than smaller baskets featured on this page like the Brabantia model. Therefore, this Addis basket is unlikely to fit into really small spaces like drawers, but it can still be tucked into cupboards or stored away compactly in the utility room.

The rubber mid-sections are sufficiently stiff to hold the basket’s shape when extended. However, there have been customer reports of the rubber perishing sooner than you might expect.

Therefore, it’s a bit of a mixed bag with this one. It’s inexpensive and functional, which makes it one of the best collapsible laundry baskets to buy on a budget, but it seems unlikely to last as long as a traditional washing basket.

Pros

  • Plastic construction means it’s waterproof and very easy to clean
  • 45 L capacity is sufficient for a large load of washing or a couple of smaller loads
  • Carrying handles are strong and sturdy - easy to transport laundry around
  • Collapses down to 6.5 cm high which dramatically reduces the space required for storage
  • Can fit larger items like towels and sheets

Cons

  • Even when collapsed down for storage the overall footprint is relatively large - it's not going to fit into a standard drawer
  • Some customers have found that the rubber sections have begun to perish in under a year

Beldray Collapsible Laundry Basket Review

With a 27 L capacity, this Beldray Collapsible Laundry Basket is a useful choice for anyone living in a small flat or studio apartment. It offers the practicality of having a useful laundry basket, without having to accommodate a large basket at all times.

Measuring 60 x 44 x 28 cm, it’s big enough for at least one generous load of washing, but can be piled high to fit more. It’s also a great option if you need to take clothes to the laundrette, offering a simple way to transport dirty and clean laundry without being left with a large basket in the home.

Made from a combination of plastic and rubber, this particular model is available in four different colours; if you have a colour scheme in your house, bathroom or kitchen this could be one of the best collapsible laundry baskets to go for.

When it comes to the question of all-important storage, it folds down to a height of approximately 12 cm, making it possible to stow away in gaps between cupboards or tuck into the bathroom. The footprint is still relatively large, so it won’t fit into very small spaces or drawers.

Overall, it’s a good budget option – offering a well-sized basket for an inexpensive price. However, it suffers from the same problem as the other rubberised baskets featured here; the rubber can start to degrade over time, especially in the creases where it folds often.

Pros

  • Plastic construction means it can be wiped clean when required
  • Choice of colours means it can fit in with colour schemes in the home
  • Collapses down to approximately 12 cm making it possible to store in gaps between cupboards and appliances

Cons

  • Folding it down takes some getting used to as it can require a bit of force to get it lying flat
  • Needs to be carried with two hands to keep it from collapsing - no hand free to hold the banister or open the machine

Brabantia Collapsible Laundry Basket Review

A very neat and modern-looking laundry solution, this Brabantia Collapsible Laundry Basket comes in contemporary tones of grey and black and is made from canvas-look fabric.

It measures 44 x 26 x 37 cm when open, with a capacity of 35 L, folding down to a depth of around 3 cm when not required. The basket simply ‘pops’ up when needed, then collapses flat using almost origami-level folds. A galvanised-steel frame is what allows the basket to fold but remain rigid when extended.

The inside has a polyurethane waterproof coating which stops damp laundry from making the basket itself soggy. It also means that clean washing won’t get wet if the basket is placed on wet grass by the line outside.

Whilst somewhat smaller than the majority of baskets featured on this page, it can still hold one load of laundry from the machine – although it isn’t large enough for carrying towels and sheets on top of this. As a general guide, it can fit approximately 9 kg of washing.

Overall, this is one of the best laundry baskets for small families and people living on their own. Whilst it can only fit one load of washing, it’s still very practical and stores away neatly without taking up much space at all.

Pros

  • Folds almost flat (retains 3 cm depth) so can be stored in a drawer when not in use
  • 35 L capacity is sufficient for carrying one load of washing
  • Interior can be wiped clean and is waterproof so protects outer fabric from wet towels and clothing
  • Neat, contemporary colours and design

Cons

  • Unless sandwiched into a drawer or between two surfaces, likely to pop open slightly
  • Whilst inside is waterproof, the seams are porous and can be more susceptible to damp

Denny International Collapsible Laundry Basket Review

Well designed for wet washing, this Denny International Collapsible Laundry Basket has holes at the bottom that will allow water to drain out. This is particularly useful when dealing with washing that can’t be spun in the machine, as it won’t end up sitting in a pool of water at the bottom of the basket.

This grey and white model measures 60.5 x 45.4 x 26.5 cm and is made from a combination of plastic and rubber which is how it is able to fold down – when collapsed, it measures around 9 cm high.

The open basket is able to hold a large load of washing, and then folds away neatly when not in use. Again, this is one of the best collapsible washing basket designs for homes that are short on space because it tucks out of the way when not required.

As a larger basket, the footprint is still relatively big, but although this basket may not fit into a small cupboard under the sink, it can still be squirrelled away better than a standard laundry basket.

Similarly to the Addis basket and the Beldray model, this laundry basket does need to be treated with some care. The rubber section may tear or deteriorate after prolonged use which is quite common for baskets with this design – the rubber folds are put under strain and become weaker over time.

Pros

  • Large capacity makes it suitable for big families and multiple loads of washing
  • Very easy to collapse down and expand with minimal strength required
  • Made from plastic and rubber so can easily be wiped clean
  • Drainage holes at the bottom stop wet washing from sitting in pools of water

Cons

  • Rubber may become weaker in creased areas over time

How to Choose The Best Collapsible Laundry Basket

Laundry baskets can get in the way. That’s just an unfortunate fact of life. Despite being a must-have for most households, it doesn’t mean we’ve necessarily got the space to store them.

Getting a collapsible laundry basket is a good solution; these baskets fold down making them virtually flat, meaning they can be stored in cupboards and, in some cases, even drawers.

They’re a great space-saving option, but there are a few things to bear in mind when looking for the best collapsible laundry basket – they come in different sizes and styles, and some fold smaller than others.

Benefits of a Collapsible Laundry Basket

Of course, the number one benefit of using a collapsible laundry basket is that they save space in your home. Many utility rooms and bedrooms simple aren’t large enough for traditional laundry baskets, and this is where collapsible models come in. They fold virtually flat, so can be stored in small areas when not in use.

Folding washing baskets are also suitable for those without washing facilities at their home. They can be transported easily and discreetly to launderettes if needed. Then, once the washing is done, you aren’t stuck with a large basket to conceal at home.

Some collapsible baskets are more like laundry hampers – large, drum-shaped baskets that can hold a lot of dirty washing. These can be used almost constantly, placed in the corner of a room until full and then carried to the washing machine. However, they still have the benefit of being able to store under the bed or in a cupboard when not required.

Material and Waterproofing

Material is one of the most important factors to consider when buying a collapsible laundry basket. It can affect the basket’s durability, as well as how easy it is to keep clean.

The most common materials are either plastic and rubber, or a metal frame covered in fabric. The fabric is generally a synthetic/natural fibre mix like polyester and cotton.

Here we’ll take a look at the different materials in more detail:

Plastic and Rubber

These collapsible laundry baskets tend to have a hard plastic rim and base, and then a silicone/rubber section in the middle. This rubber section folds down, allowing the basket to have its ‘collapsibility’.

For the most part, these baskets stay up when they are required to, and fold down relatively easily. Sometimes a little bit of force can be needed to persuade them to close.

The benefit of plastic and rubber is that they are waterproof materials, therefore they are not affected by holding wet washing. They will also contain moisture from wet washing, instead of transferring it to the floor etc.

Cleaning a plastic/rubber laundry basket is as easy as wiping it down with a damp cloth.

However, these baskets are quite prone to one particular flaw: Because of the pressure that the rubber is put under, constantly being creased when it is folded, it is not uncommon for it to get holes in or split.

This can lead plastic/rubber collapsible laundry baskets to have a shorter lifespan than traditional plastic laundry baskets.

They also don’t tend to fold down quite as much as fabric baskets, because the parts of them that are made from solid plastic always leave a rim of around 8 – 12 cm.

Fabric

Collapsible laundry baskets made from fabric can generally fold down extremely flat; they’re slightly more malleable than plastic baskets and can often fit into tighter storage spaces.

The most important thing to look out for is the thickness of the material, and whether it has been treated with a waterproof coating.

Thicker materials like polyester and cotton will help the basket stand up on its own without collapsing down. A waterproof coating (like either a PE or PU coating) will be invaluable for the longevity of the basket.

If there is a waterproof coating inside, it will stop the moisture from wet clothes transferring to the fabric outer layer. It will also mean the basket is easy to wipe clean. If fabric is left wet for too long then it can get mildew or even mould, so it’s important that there’s some waterproofing in place. A waterproof outer layer will also ensure that moisture doesn’t transfer to the basket if it is put on wet grass etc.

By nature, collapsible baskets made from fabric will likely look a little creased when ‘up’. However, fabric is well suited to being frequently folded and unfolded so it doesn’t show signs of wear as quickly as rubber.

Choosing the Right Capacity

Collapsible laundry baskets are available in an array of sizes.

Those with a larger capacity will be able to accommodate towels, bedding and other heavier items, while smaller baskets can be used for lightweight clothing and underwear.

If you’re going to be carrying a large amount of washing at once, opt for a basket with a capacity of 40 L or more. Those with a capacity of under 30 L are best suited to holding just one load of washing so are a better option for small households.

A Final Thought on Storage

Whilst you might want a large laundry basket that can hold a lot of clothes, you still need to think about whether you have the space to store it. Larger baskets have bigger ‘footprints’ and can’t necessarily just be tucked away into any small cupboard. Small fabric baskets, on the other hands, can sometimes be compacted down to fit into drawers.

If you really want to hide the basket from sight when it’s not in use, you may have to size down on the amount of washing it can hold. Alternatively, most collapsible laundry baskets will slot in between appliances if you have any gaps in your kitchen or utility room.

Collapsible Laundry Basket FAQs

How do you clean a laundry basket?

If you have a plastic/rubber laundry basket, you can easily clean it by wiping it with soap and water. You could even spray it with the hose.

With a fabric laundry basket, you can wipe it clean with a cloth. You can wipe any surface, whether it has a waterproof coating or not, with a cloth – but you must make sure that it dries well. Don’t leave fabric damp for hours with no flow of air. You also must not wash a fabric laundry basket in the washing machine if it has a waterproof coating. The washing machine can strip it of its waterproof properties.

What are some good hygiene tips for laundry baskets?

While laundry baskets are designed for dirty laundry, there’s a few ways you can help keep them clean and free from mould.

First, never put wet bath or beach towels into your basket. Instead, hang them out to dry before washing.

Another tip is to avoid putting sweaty gym clothes into your basket. Try to wash them straight away, as they offer the perfect spot for mould to thrive. If you aren’t ready to wash them, hang them out to dry before putting them into the basket.

Basically, the overarching theme is to avoid leaving damp, dirty laundry to sit in the basket – always dry it first.

What’s the best collapsible laundry basket for really small homes?

A collapsible basket made from fabric is the best choice for really small homes with very limited storage space. Often, these can compact down to a depth of around 3 cm, making them very easy to store. If you really don’t have a lot of storage, you may have to buy a basket that has a smaller capacity than what you need, and instead do several trips to/from the washing machine. This will allow you to buy a small collapsible laundry basket that can even be folded to fit in a drawer.
