VonHaus G-Series Cordless Leaf Blower Review

Written by: - Gardening Expert

If you have a large garden or you’re looking to shift big loads of heavy leaves, then you’ll need a blower that’s more powerful than this one – look into the Bosch, or possibly even a petrol leaf blower

However, if you’re looking to tidy a small or medium garden and don’t plan on using your leaf blower every weekend, then the VonHaus G-Series Cordless Leaf Blower would be a great buy. It may not be as powerful or versatile as some of the alternatives, but it still manages to offer everything that you could need to clear smaller spaces.

If you’re looking for a new leaf blower but don’t want to spend a whole lot of money, then chances are that the VonHaus G-Series Cordless Leaf Blower will come up in your search. Until recently, I wasn’t too familiar with this budget brand. However, after testing and reviewing their electric scarifier, I was impressed – hopefully, their cordless leaf blower would also offer high-performance results with a low-end price.

How I Tested

I’m all for leaving leaves to naturally break down where they land – after all, this not only feeds the soil, but it also saves you from having to spend time gathering those leaves up. However, this isn’t a wise choice in high-traffic areas – a thick blanket of leaves will quickly turn slimy and slippery, not only making that area dangerous to walk on, but also smothering out any grass that lies beneath.

So, I intended to use the VonHaus G-Series Cordless Leaf Blower to clear these high-traffic areas of my farm. While some of the best cordless leaf blowers that I tested, such as the Makita, were designed with multiple uses in mind, this model was created primarily for dispersing garden debris, so I wanted to test it out on both dry and wet leaves in a few different areas.

Ease of Assembly

5

Most cordless leaf blowers don’t require much assembly, and, thankfully, the VonHaus was the same. It arrived in three pieces; the main unit, the nozzle, and the battery. All you need to do is put these three things together, which takes less than a minute, and you’ll be ready to start blowing!

When I first looked at the VonHaus next to the other leaf blowers that I tested, it definitely didn’t seem like anything extraordinary. It looks larger and clunkier than its competition – it’s not quite as sleek as the Einhell or Bosch models. Its colours aren’t as appealing either – the grey and black just doesn’t stand out like some of the other brands’ designs.

However, things started to improve once I took a closer look at the machine’s design features. Rather than being equipped with a trigger that you have to constantly press while using the machine, this one boasts a simple on/off switch at the top of the handle. Just like the Ryobi blower I reviewed, this blower only offers one speed setting, but this isn’t necessarily a disadvantage – I usually keep all of my leaf blowers on their highest setting when I’m using them outside anyway.

The blower’s nozzle is a good length – it’s just as long as those that come with higher-end models. It’s also slightly tapered at the end to allow for increased control. The blower’s soft grip rubber handle is something that will also be appreciated when using the machine for extended periods of time.

Performance

Dry Leaves

I always start by testing a leaf blower on dry leaves. After all, you’re not really meant to use a blower on wet and heavy leaves. Just as I expected, the VonHaus cordless blower was able to shift dry leaves pretty quickly. I did find myself having to stand a little closer to the leaves than I did with the other blowers I tested, but this wasn’t an inconvenience in any way – it just requires a slightly different blowing technique.

Wet Leaves

Most of the others blowers that I reviewed struggled to disperse wet and heavy leaves – the only one that coped well with them was the Ryobi. The VonHaus sits somewhere in the middle. It wasn’t as ineffective as some, yet it also wasn’t able to get the job done in a satisfactory way. Yes, it can be used to blow wet leaves, but expect to spend quite a bit of time on the task. If you can wait for those leaves to dry, you’ll get things done much faster and more efficiently.

Ease of Use

5

The VonHaus G-Series Cordless Leaf Blower is extremely simple, easy, and comfortable to use. Weighing in at just 1.85kg makes this one of the lightest blowers that I tested. I was able to use it with one hand, which is useful when you need to clear tight corners. The lack of a trigger also meant that I could hold the blower any way I liked – again, this is ideal when you’re using the tool in awkward spaces.

Another feature that makes this blower convenient to use is the LED lights on the battery. They enable you to quickly glance down to check battery life, saving you from starting on a new area when you only have a couple of minutes of blow time left.

Power

4

As mentioned, this leaf blower only has one blow speed – 130mph, which works out to 209km/h. That makes this the least powerful leaf blower that I tested – most other models, from the Bosch ALB 36 LI to the Makita DUB185Z, have top speeds of between 240-250km/h. The lower power was definitely noticeable when I was using the machine – I had to position myself closer to the leaves in order to shift them. However, once I did this, it was able to move dry leaves just as well as higher-powered blowers.

My VonHaus blower came with a 1.5aH 20V battery. It took about an hour to charge, after which it gave me a continuous blow time of less than ten minutes. Obviously, this isn’t great if you have a large area to clear. However, it’s worth noting that the Makita blower, which I used with a larger 3.0aH battery, offered the same blow time. So, for the battery size, I’d say that 10 minutes wasn’t too bad. It would be interesting to see how much this extended with a larger battery.

Safety

There weren’t really any noteworthy safety features with this leaf blower, although most of the others that I tested didn’t offer much in terms of safety either. To be fair, a leaf blower isn’t really a dangerous tool, so multiple safety features aren’t needed.

Just like the others, the VonHaus blower has a safety sticker that displays a few warnings. However, while these were pasted onto the main unit of the other blowers I used, therefore making them easy to see, VonHaus slapped theirs quite haphazardly onto the nozzle, making it feel like more of an afterthought.

It’s also worth noting that, at 99 dB(A), this was the loudest leaf blower that I tested. Since it only offers a continuous blow time of under ten minutes, I didn’t feel the need to wear ear protection. However, if you’re going to use the blower for longer (you’d need to either buy a spare battery or a larger battery to do this), then ear protection would be worth considering.

Value for Money

5

The VonHaus G-Series Cordless Leaf Blower is priced lower than many of its competitors. When you consider the fact that it’s not quite as powerful and only offers one blowing speed, then the reduced price makes sense.

That said, for what you’re paying, you’re still getting a fantastic machine in return. It performs extremely well for what it costs, making its price more than fair.

As an added bonus, this leaf blower also comes with a two year manufacturer’s warranty.
