What To Look For in a Hedgehog Food
Choosing a hedgehog food with the correct nutritional composition is one of the most important things to consider. Look for food with around 28 – 35% protein, 15 – 20% fat and 5% fibre. Checking the ingredients for named meats and grains, as well as more than one protein source to help ensure quality.
It’s also vital that food has an acceptable ratio of calcium to phosphorus. There should be more calcium than phosphorus; look for a 2:1 ratio, or 1:1 if this isn’t possible. This will help prevent calcium deficiency and is therefore very important to hedgehog nutrition.
There are several ingredients that should be avoided as well. Steer clear of foods that contain mealworms, dried fruit, or sugary elements like honey. Additionally, avoid artificial components such as colours and preservatives, as well as non-nutritional ‘fillers’ like wheat, rice and corn.
Dry food is a better choice as it keeps hedgehog’s teeth and gums clean and healthy. Plus, if you have a trail-cam, it’s great to hear them crunching away. Wet food may help to initially attract hedgehogs, but be aware that it can freeze in winter and attract flies in spring.
With this in mind, my top choice is Spike’s Delicious Crunchy Dry Hedgehog Food. It’s nutritionally balanced and contains 25% protein (poultry meat) amongst other ingredients. There are no artificial flavours, colours, or preservatives and thanks to the small bite-size pieces, it’s suitable for both hedgehogs and hoglets.
It comes in a 2.5 kg resealable bag which will last around four months if you’re feeding one hedgehog, or two months if you’re feeding two adults.
