Garden Sprayer Buyer’s Guide
A garden sprayer has a multitude of uses, helping to keep your flowers and plants in good shape while also being suitable for patio cleaning and more. A good garden sprayer should last a long time, and it’s worth putting some thought into finding the right one.

The bigger the capacity, the more of whatever you are spraying you can carry around at once. For large gardens, a big capacity is perfect, as it reduces the number of trips needed back and forth to fill it up. If you have less work needing doing, look for a capacity of 5L or less.
The larger the capacity, the heavier your sprayer will be, so only purchase the size you need to avoid having to carry around unnecessary weight!
Garden sprayers come in a range of designs. Handheld sprayers are lightweight and easy to use. They tend to have a smaller capacity which makes them suitable for small flower beds. They are the most affordable option, but aren’t suitable for big jobs.
Backpack sprayers are popular amongst amateurs and professionals alike. Best for those with large spray areas, these have straps so they can be worn like a backpack for a long period of time. You’ll be able to cover a bigger area as they have a large capacity, and they usually provide a stronger pressure.
Finally, there’s wheeled sprayers. These take the pressure off your hands and back, with the ease of manoeuvrability often meaning they have a much larger capacity. Wheeled sprayers are suitable for very large areas but wouldn’t be a good option for average size gardens.
The larger the tank (and the more you fill it!), the more your garden sprayer will weigh. Heavier sprayers should be designed with comfort and ergonomics in mind. Most are either wheeled or backpack sprayers. If your sprayer is heavy, you should ensure the weight is evenly distributed to avoid excessively loading one arm or shoulder.
Those with a small garden can look for a lightweight and compact sprayer that won’t cause you to ache after use!
If you’re purchasing a backpack sprayer or one that can be carried over your shoulder, comfort is important. Look for even and sturdy straps so that no part of your body is loaded more than another. Sprayers with a slightly curved tank tend to be more comfortable, as they conform better to the shape of your back.
Garden Sprayers FAQ
How to use a garden sprayer?
While garden sprayers do require some manual work, they are very easy to use. First, ensure you have mixed the chemicals according to the instructions. Add the right amount for the area you are spraying.
Put the lid on the sprayer and turn it until it’s tight, then pressurise the canister by using the handle to pump up and down. Once the handle gets difficult to push down, the canister is pressurised.
Select the right spray setting (either wide, narrow or something in between!) and position the nozzle the correct distance from the plants or weeds. Squeeze the temperature to dispense the chemical, and spray the plant as much as you need.
Once you have finished, remove the lid and rinse the sprayer thoroughly with a hose. Pour the excess somewhere away from your plants.
A garden sprayer is a versatile and handy tool for any gardener, and they are especially useful if you have a large garden or a lot of plants that need treating. For its large 10L capacity, ease of use and comfortable rucksack style harness, the Hozelock Pressure Sprayer is our top recommendation.
