Pole Saw Buyer’s Guide
Operating a chainsaw from the top of a ladder is only for the bravest of the brave! Pole chainsaws allow you to reach and cut tall branches while keeping your feet firmly on the ground.
Modern pole chainsaws are specifically designed for easy and safe usage. If you’ve got a lot of tall branches that need cutting and you’re not keen on risking your life on top of a ladder, check out this buyer’s guide for all you need to know about pole saws.
Pole chainsaws are powered by either petrol or electricity. Electric pole saws can be cordless or corded, and although they may be less powerful than petrol models, they are easier to use and lower maintenance.
Petrol saws are powerful pieces of machinery and perfect if you have a larger garden. They are suitable for heavy duty work, and although they’re louder and higher maintenance, they will get the job done faster.
Maximum reach will determine the height your chainsaw can reach above your head. Most will come with telescopic poles so that you can set the required height. It’s best to look for a reach of 2m and above.
The bar length will determine the size of branches you can cut through. Your bar should be at least 2 inches bigger than the size of branch you’re trying to cut. This is especially important for pole chainsaws, where it’s safest to tackle branches in one smooth cut.
The weight of the saw is hugely important, especially if you are going to be holding it above your head. A chainsaw positioned on a pole 1m or so away from you will feel twice as heavy as it would if you were holding it in your hands.
Go for a lightweight saw, and we highly recommend opting for one with a shoulder strap too, to lighten the load.
Buying a high quality saw from a reputable manufacturer is the safest option, although you must still take responsibility for your own safety whilst operating the chainsaw. Ensure the blades are well oiled (most chainsaws will have automatic oiling) and that they are regularly sharpened and cleaned.
Wear the correct safety gear when cutting branches above your head. A hard hat is highly recommended, as are gloves, long sleeves and safety goggles.
A pole chain saw is a handy garden tool that allows you to trim taller branches without putting yourself in danger on a wobbly ladder! For its ease of use, comfort and multi engine positioning, the Makita MM4 Chainsaw is our top recommendation for the best pole chain saw.
