Staple Gun Buyer’s Guide
When choosing a staple gun (or stapler gun) your first consideration should be picking one that is sturdy enough to do the job. Select one that has an all-steel construction and is hard-wearing and durable.
You should also consider the mechanism of the staple gun. It can be manual, electric, cordless or air powered. For occasional jobs, a manual stapler gun will be fine. However, if you use your stapler a lot then an electric or air powered staple gun will reduce the strain on your hands.
You should also consider the size of staples and/or brad nails the gun is compatible with. Some can only be used with small staples and nails whilst others can handle staples up to 25 mm and brad nails up to 32 mm. If you are using your staple gun to fix sheet material or architrave, check that the gun will take nails that are large enough to do this.
When choosing a staple gun also check the magazine capacity and how easy it actually is to load the staples or brads. The larger the capacity the less often you will have to stop and reload. Most modern staple guns have easy to load magazines.
Modern staple guns are usually very efficient and effective. All but the cheapest models come with anti-jam mechanisms for smooth continuous use.
FAQs
How do you load a staple gun?
Different staple guns are loaded in different ways. Manual staple guns are often loaded in a similar way to a desk stapler. At the back of the stapler there’s a little spring-loaded bracket that you push in and down to release the staple chute. You then insert your staples into the end, push down the cover, and reinsert the spring plate.
However different staplers do have different methods. All are generally quite simple but you should refer to the manufacturer’s instructions to find out how to load your particular model.
How does a staple gun work?
A manual staple gun is spring powered. You grip the gun in one hand and squeeze the trigger, activating a spring mechanism. This drives the staple into the material.
How do you use a staple gun?
When using a staple gun position the tip of the gun where you want the staple to be fired. Ensure the whole tip of the gun is in contact with the surface you are firing into. Then squeeze the trigger of the gun to fire the staple into the material.
What can I use a staple gun for?
Staple guns can be used for a wide variety of jobs. Combination staple/brad guns can be used for even more. A brad nailer fires small nails rather than staples.
Staple guns and brad guns can be used for upholstery. They can also be used to attach materials such as insulating foils, damp proof courses and roofing felt, and to fix lightweight boards such as MDF and plywood. You can also use some brad guns to affix architrave and skirting boards.
In essence the jobs you can do with your staple gun will depend on the type of gun you are using, whether it takes brad nails, and the size of nails that can be used.
