Things to Know Before Buying a Wall Mounted Patio Heater
There’s nothing worse than having to cut short a fun evening out on the patio with friends, family, or even just a good book, simply because it’s starting to get chilly.
A wall mounted patio heater can really increase the amount of time you’re able to spend out in your garden – no matter the season! If you’re looking for ways to get the most out of your outside space, these heaters will open a world of opportunities for you.
Imagine: you could have a pleasant coffee outside for elevenses in winter, or keep the party going even into those cooler nights in summer!
There are some things to bear in mind when trying to choose the best wall mounted patio heater for your garden, so I’ve put together the following information to help you make an informed purchase:
Wall mounted patio heaters bring a whole host of benefits to your garden.
Of course, they provide warmth and allow you to sit out and enjoy your patio even when the temperature drops – but that’s not the only reason they’re worth buying!
Wall mounted heaters in particular are extremely convenient and practical. They are weatherproof and durable, meaning that they can stay out year-round and be ready for use within a moment’s notice. This means there’s no off-putting need to drag the heater out of the shed when you see that it’s a nice day – you can just go straight out and switch on the wall mounted heater!
What’s more, they save space. As a result, wall mounted heaters are just as appropriate for small patios as they are for large ones; no valuable floor space will be taken up by the heater!
Plus, there’s no danger of the heater getting knocked over or becoming a hazard. This can be especially useful if there are young children or pets around – floor-standing heaters may not be appropriate for them!
There are plenty of heaters available on the market in general. Some are infrared/halogen heaters or classic electric heaters, whilst others run on gas.
When buying a heater for a patio, you should try to make sure you’re investing in a heater that uses radiation to heat, as opposed to convection. So, what’s the difference and why does it matter?
Heaters which heat via convection work by warming up the air around the heater. When this air heats up, it rises. In an enclosed room this means that the warm air rises, thereby circulating and pushing cooler air next to the heater. This process continues, and works as a very efficient way to heat rooms. Warm air spreads throughout the space. So, of course, there is a problem with this method if the area isn’t air tight – or, for example, if the heater is being used outside.
Convection heaters won’t be efficient at transferring heat in an open space. A lot of the power that will go into heating them will be wasted, e.g. not efficiently transferred to keeping you warm! Examples of convector heaters include hot-water radiators, oil radiators, and fan heaters.
On the other hand, heaters which transfer heat via radiation (heat radiation, like the way the sun feels warm even on a cool day, as opposed to any other type of radiation) are much better at providing heat outside. These heaters transfer their warmth directly onto the subjects in front of them, without focusing on warming the air. As a result, they are very suitable for outdoor use. Infrared heaters are an example of this type of heating.
Whilst you won’t be using your patio heater the whole time, it’s still a good idea to keep running costs in mind.
The cost of running an electric heaters depends on how much power it uses. You can calculate the cost of running an electric heater per hour as follows: take the kilowattage of the heater and multiply it by how much your electricity provider charges you per kWh.
For example, if we presume that you pay 0.14p per kWh, and you want to run a 1 kW (1000 W) heater for one hour, then this will cost you 0.14p. If you want to run a 2 kW (2000 W) heater, this will cost 0.28p to run for an hour, and so on.
You can keep running costs down by using your heater on its lowest power setting and by making sure to turn it off whenever you’re not using it. Of course, the lowest power setting will not provide as much heat as higher settings. But, regardless, it is good to try to buy a heater with several power/heat options, so that you have the choice.
When it comes to wall mounted patio heaters, extra features are not strictly necessary. For example, a simple patio heater with an on/off switch like the Sundate 2000W Patio Heater is still going to do a fantastic job.
However, having a few extra features can just make life a bit easier and also save money.
If your patio heater has a timer, it will automatically switch off after a certain amount of time. This can be a really good feature to have, especially if you’re keen to keep running costs down. It’s extremely easy just to leave a patio heater on constantly when you’re outside, but you may end up using it more than strictly necessary. A timer can make all the difference as you won’t realise how the time adds up money-wise.
If you nip inside for five minutes to make a drink, and your heater turns off, you’ll have saved around 0.02p by not having it on for five minutes. This might not sound like a lot, but over the course of days, weeks and months, this money will add up.
Patio heaters which come with remote controls remove the necessity to keep getting up to adjust the heater’s settings. Whether you want to turn the heater on, off, up or down, it can be really nice to have the option to do this from your seat. In the long run, it may also save you money, as you’ll be more willing to turn the heater off for a bit, knowing that you can easily turn it back on from the comfort of your chair.
Wall Mounted Patio Heater FAQs
You need to be really careful when using a wall mounted patio heater under a canopy. If there is enough clearance, at least 1 m, from the top of the heater to the canopy, then you may be able to use both. You should follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and never leave a heater unattended.
Approximately 0.14p – 0.28p. You can calculate running cost by taking the kW power of your heater and multiplying it by how much your energy provider charges per kWh.
Example: if you’re using a 1 kW heater and you are charged 0.14p per kWh by your energy provider, it will cost 0.14p to run this heater for an hour. If you’re running a 2 kW heater, it will cost 0.28p, 3 kW will cost 0.42p, and so on.
Check if the patio heater has an IP rating. If the second number is 4 or above then the product is deemed waterproof and completely suitable for outside use. If there is no IP rating, or the second number is below 4, the product cannot be said to be waterproof.
