Folding Step Ladder Reviews

Editors Choice
  • 1. It’s the lightest six-step ladder on my list. Weighing in at just 5.3 kg, it’s easy enough for just about anyone to carry around. The lighter it is, the more chance you’ll use it.
  • 2. The curved top section of the ladder is taller than a lot of standard step ladders. You can use it manoeuvre the ladder around or lean on it when standing on the steps for balance.
  • 3. The top step is also a tray that will always come in useful. Whether you use it to hold your paint pot, dish of screws, or a cup of tea, you’d miss it if it wasn’t there.

  • 1. I’m not keen on the nylon straps that hold the ladder open in its “A” frame state. Yes, they’re solidly attached, but over time I would be concerned about wear and tear.
  • 2. The average ceiling height in the UK is 2.4 m. The top step of this ladder is 1.2 m high, so you can’t use it as a loft ladder. Save yourself the hassle and buy a proper loft ladder instead.
  • 3. As some users have said, the steps are not particularly wide. If, like me, you’ve got big feet then having less than 50 cm wide steps isn’t ideal. There’s not much room to move.

They might sound like the bad guy in a sci-fi film, but Draak happen to make some excellent DIY products as well as one of the best step ladders for the money. Their 6-step aluminium ladder is just the right thing to store in your shed for when you need to get up high. It’s incredibly lightweight and has reliably grippy steps.

This is the classic type of aluminium step ladder that would be found in any DIYer’s arsenal of useful kit. If you’re planning on doing a spot of re-decorating, then you can’t go far wrong with a step ladder that reaches up to 184 cm. Other ladders in the Draak range include 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8-step versions.

The steps have a nice, machined finish to them that helps you to grip on, and the top curved part is longer, meaning you can lean on it for a bit of extra balance. With a maximum loaded weight of 150 kg, this lightweight ladder can easily accommodate heavier individuals plus their tools. It’s one of the best sets of steps I’ve seen in a while.

2. XinSunho Five Step Retractable Step Ladder

Best with retractable handgrip

XinSunho Five Step Retractable Step Ladder
  • It’s quite amazing how compact this ladder is. The pivoting steps mean that it folds down flat without compromising the tread depth. It would easily fit into the cupboard under the stairs.
  • Unlike the Draak’s nylon strap, this step ladder uses a sturdy metal folding mechanism to lock into place. Once it’s fixed open, you can then extend the handgrip for more balance.
  • This ladder can handle up to 150 kg. That’s roughly equal to a large person and all their tools. The last thing you want is a weak ladder, so I’m confident this one will last.

  • Weighing in at nearly 7 kg, it’s not exactly weighty, but it’s one of the heavier aluminium ladders on my list. I’d still rather carry round a 5 kg ladder all day long.
  • Although the treads are nice and deep on this ladder, it lacks a top shelf. The all important place to store bits and pieces or a plate of biscuits is missing, which is a shame.
  • Although 151 cm maximum height when open, or 142 cm when closed, is quite a lot, it’s nowhere near as tall compared with the Draak ladder.

Step stool and folding ladder experts XinSunho know a thing or two about making the best step ladders. The best all-round ladder they produce is this five-step retractable step version. It folds down incredibly small but can still help you reach up to the highest shelves in your house.

Made from bright aluminium, this is a step ladder with a clever action. The wide steps pivot through 90° when you open the ladder up, which allows for two things. Firstly, it folds down incredibly flat, and the profile is less than 7 cm when it’s folded up. Secondly, the steps are nice and deep, allowing plenty of room for big feet. And with a maximum height of 151 cm, it’s tall enough for most DIY situations.

The secret weapon that this ladder packs is the retractable top-hand grip. Once you’ve opened the ladder and locked it into place, you can extend the top section by almost 20 cm. This extra bit of grip gives you something to hang on to when climbing the ladder. XinSunho also make this handy ladder in 3 and 4-step versions.

Also Good
  • There are plenty of times when you don’t need a full size set of steps. Having a small set like this still gives you 61 extra centimetres of height, and it will stow away easily.
  • The wide base and grippy rubber feet make this a steady step stool to stand on. The angle of the legs and the chunky aluminium used in its construction all help to keep you steady.
  • The steps and top platform are coated in a granular non-slip material, as well as the grooves that are machined into the surface. They’re reliably grippy from any angle.

  • One of the inherent dangers of working on a step stool like this is there’s no handle to hang on to. Once you’ve climbed up these steps, you’re on your own. Always take care.
  • When you’re working up a step stool like this and moving around, it’s handy to have a way to check which side the steps are on. There’s no easy way to check without bending down.
  • It seems obvious, but if you have the space for a larger step ladder, get one. With a full size set of steps, you can easily reach higher, plus you have something to hang on to.

As you might guess from their name, Kingrack manufacture an impressive range of clever storage solutions and other equipment designed for the home. If you need a small set of steps that fold away but still let you reach that top shelf, then their three-step ladder fits the bill. You don’t always need a full set of steps, so having this miniature version tucked away is rather handy.

Even though this looks like a toy version of a regular step ladder, it’s ruggedly built from aluminium box section and can hold as much weight as a full-size ladder. You also get excellent non-slip steps and a wide top platform that allows you to work at a maximum height of just under 61 cm.

Folding the steps flat is easy, and once retracted they’re slim enough to fit in a cupboard without taking up too much room. The bottoms of the legs have grippy rubber feet to stop them sliding around, and at less than 4 kg they’re the lightest steps on my list. A great choice for when you don’t need a full-size ladder.

  • The maximum load this beast of a ladder can take is 360 kg. That’s an enormous amount of weight, seeing as the average man weighs around 85 kg. There’s no chance of overload.
  • Even if you’re working on a simple domestic job like changing a lightbulb, there’s a chance of electric shock. By swapping out your metal ladder for a fibreglass one, there’s less danger.
  • This is arguably the most rugged type of step ladder on the market. If you don’t trust lightweight aluminium ladders, or just want extra peace of mind, this is the right choice.

  • All this reach and stability comes at a cost. Weighing 10 kg, it’s not heavy for a 2.5 m high ladder, but you’ll certainly know the difference compared with the lightweight Draak one.
  • This is also one of the most expensive ladders on my list. You can’t expect to get hold of a long fibreglass ladder without paying a premium for it. It’s a professional tool.
  • Not that it’s a good idea to try it, but you can’t stand on the top rung. Compared with the carry handle on the XinSunho, there’s nothing to hang on to near the top either.

If you need heavy-duty equipment like sturdy metal cabinets or chunky cable protectors, then The Workplace Depot is the place to go. And if you need a serious set of steps that are safe to use around live electricity, their eight-tread fibreglass step ladder is one of the best in the business. With a huge reach and impressive maximum load capacity, this is a serious ladder to have in your arsenal.

This big beast of a step ladder is made from fibreglass. This provides several benefits over metal ladders, as it’s incredibly weather resistant, stronger than tubular or box section aluminium, and non-conductive to electricity. Available in 4 and six-tread versions, it’s a solid series of ladders.

There’s a huge amount to reach with this eight-tread ladder. Reaching nearly 2.5 m in the air, you can comfortably work at heights other ladders wish they could achieve. And when you’re up at the top of the ladder, there’s a handy tray that can hold tools, rolls of tape, or even a precious cuppa. This huge ladder is ideal for indoor as well as outdoor jobs and could easily reach a loft hatch.

  • If you’re at all nervous about climbing a step ladder, then this is one of the easiest I’ve come across. Big handrails, deep steps, and excellent rubberised grips help you to feel at home.
  • You can climb really high on this step ladder, and still hang on to the top handle or safety rails. At 160 cm in height, there’s 60 cm above the top step to hang on to.
  • If you need to stow this ladder away for a while and the safety handles are in the way, you can simply unbolt them. If you’re a confident climber, you can also remove them altogether.

  • As good as the safety handrails are for keeping your balance, they get in the way when you fold the ladder up. Compared with the incredibly streamlined XinSunho, these are a bit big.
  • As you might expect from a tubular steel alloy ladder, there’s a fair amount of weight to content with. At 9 kg, this is definitely not an ultra-lightweight aluminium step ladder.
  • There’s a bit of assembly needed before you can start re-painting the kitchen ceiling. Although supplied with all the necessary tools, they’re not the best quality.

If you need a new set of shelves for the garage, a decorative post box, or clothes airer, homewares outfit Home Vida have got your back. And if you need a really solid set of steps, their step ladder with safety handrail is one of the best. Made from chunky tubular steel, it’s as solid as a rock and easy to climb thanks to its textured treads.

Ideally designed for anyone who wants to climb up high, but not without extra support, the four steps on this ladder will get you up to just under 1 m high. That’s high enough to reach most things around the home or garden, and you have big handrails on either side to hang on to.

To add to the stability, the legs splay out at the bottom and have rubber feet for gripping onto a range of surfaces. Each folding tread has a ribbed, rubberised texture that allows for excellent grip, whatever the weather. It can take up to 150 kg maximum load as well, so it’s ideal for working on, even with your tools.

6. Beldray LA023957TQ Two Step Ladder

Best small ladder with handrail

 Beldray LA023957TQ Two Step Ladder
  • These are the ultimate kitchen steps. Need to get up on top of the wall cabinets? Don’t drag out a chair. This set of steps is non-slip, easy to climb, and comfortable to stand on.
  • There’s a lot to like about a set of steps like this for the price. More affordable than a full size step ladder, it’s ideal for changing lightbulbs, or even doing a spot of decorating.
  • Compared with the Kingrack steps, you sacrifice a little height, but have the advantage of a top handle. This way, you know where the steps are and there’s something to hold on to.

  • If you need your steps ultra-light and portable, you should go for aluminium. Steels steps might be sturdy, but you pay the price in weight. This weighs as much as a full size ladder.
  • More than a few users have complained that the closing mechanism is stiff. Although it’s good to know it won’t close accidentally, you might need to oil it after purchase.
  • Compared with the grippy rubber feet you get on the Kingrack steps, some users have complained that the feet on this ladder can skid about on laminate floors.

British company Beldray are famous for inventing the folding ironing board, but also make one of the best kitchen steps that I’ve come across. With more than 150 years of experience, they know a thing or two about what works well in the home. The LA023957TQ two-step ladder is great. It’s small, folds down flat, and it even looks good.

Made from steel box section, this simple set of steps is rugged and reliable without taking up too much room. The two treads are wide and have a turquoise-coloured non-slip coating on them, so it doesn’t look ugly in your kitchen.

When standing on the top step, you get an extra 47 cm of height from the floor, and you can use the large, curved handle on the top to help keep yourself steady. Weighing in at just over 4 kg, it’s not exactly lightweight, but it feels nice and solid. And if you need a bit more reach, there’s a three-step version available.

  • The contemporary design and jet black coating of this step stool makes it a rather good looking piece of kit. Compared with the utilitarian look of standard steps, it’s impressive.
  • Once folded flat, it’s a very easy set of steps to store out of the way. It measures less than 5 cm deep, so it’ll fit into almost any narrow gap you have, without getting stuck.
  • The extra grip you get on the treads comes from a textured nano-sanding process that also makes the aluminium alloy underneath much more weather resistant.

  • If you’re not confident climbing steps or working at heights, you might not get on with this ladder. The lack of hand rails or a top handle mean you’re relying on balance alone.
  • As you might expect from a small set of steps, the treads are not particularly wide. At just a shade under 45 cm, there’s room for both my feet, but not much left to move around.
  • This two step version is almost too low for my liking. If you’re going to the trouble of buying some steps, I would prefer the three step version they sell, for extra height when needed.

Don’t be put off by the bizarre brand name, BQKOZFIN know a thing or two about making the best folding step stools, alongside a whole host of clever storage and safety items. Their three-step folding ladder is a sturdy little piece of kit that you can stow away just about anywhere. It looks pretty good in jet black, but you can opt for a silver version if that’s what you like.

This set of steps is deceptively simple, and just the right thing to hide under the stairs for when you need that extra bit of reach. You unfold the aluminium alloy “A” frame, the steps pivot around, and you’ve got yourself an extra 66 cm of height from the top step. Rated to a maximum load weight of 150 kg, it should be strong enough to hold whatever you need it to.

Each tread is textured for extra grip and seeing as it weighs less than 4.5 kg it’s easy to manoeuvre to where you need it. The bottom of each leg has a non-slip ferrule, and if you need some extra height there’s a four-step version available too. It might be small, but it’s a handy little set of steps to have around.

  • The top step is at just the right height to be useful, while the whole ladder isn’t overly large. You can store it away easily, nothing sticks out too much, and it’s comfortable to climb.
  • Rated to carry a maximum load of 150 kg, a large person with a bag of tools should be well within the limit of this set of steps. Not bad for such a slim package.
  • These steps fold almost completely flat. Thanks to the pivoting treads, it folds down with less than 5 cm depth. That’s impressive for something that can get you 70 cm in the air.

  • If you want an ultra-light step ladder, you need to look at aluminium. The alloy steel used in this ladder makes it sturdy, but it comes at a cost. 6.6 kg is on the heavy side for some users.
  • Several users have commented that folding the steps away is a bit of a pain, especially when new. It might need a drop of oil to help loosen up the mechanism.

Manchester-based VonHaus make a rather impressive range of tools, gadgets, and accessories. Their three step folding ladder has a simple and robust design, and all the features you need to feel safe when climbing up to dust the picture rails. It’s not a bad price for a folding step stool either.

Made from alloy steel and featuring three rubberised treads, this step stool folds out easily and has the all-important safety handle on top. It means you have something to grip on when you’re climbing up. The top step is 70 cm off the floor, so you can add a lot of height by climbing just a few steps.

Each deep tread features a texturised rubber foot pad. This should keep you from sliding about, compared with raw aluminium treads, and means you can climb up and down confidently. They’re heavier than aluminium steps but nice and sturdy.

  • Werner is one of the big names for a good reason. The overall build quality is excellent, there are extra supports at the base of the ladder in blue, and it should last a lifetime.
  • If you’re an electrician, having a non-conductive ladder is essential. And if you’re a homeowner that needs to work on your wiring, you need a safe ladder just as much.
  • Rated to hold 150 kg, I trust this ladder to hold me and my tools. It’s reliably built, compared with the Draak ladder, it doesn’t use nylon straps to stay in place.

  • Weighing in at 8.8 kg, this is not a lightweight folding ladder. It’s strong, it’s robust, and it will take some abuse, but it doesn’t fold down particularly small for stowing away.
  • You pay premium prices for premium step ladders. Unless you’re planning on doing a lot of work around the home and garden, shelling out for a pro-level fibreglass ladder is expensive.
  • Do you need a five-step professional ladder to get to the top shelf in a kitchen, or access your loft? It’s a bit overkill when a step stool will reach the shelves just as well.

There’s probably only one brand of ladder that I can think of, and that’s Werner. The daddy of all professional ladder makes, they’re spotted on building sites and on top of vans all over the country. The 7160618 fibreglass swingback stepladder is just one of a huge range of pro-level ladders that they sell. If you’re looking for a robust, safe, and well-tested ladder, this is it.

Although Werner sells ladders in almost any size, this five-step “swingback” style ladder is one of the most versatile. Reaching up to 167 cm when open, you can also use it closed for 184 cm overall height. The fibreglass construction means you can use it around live electrics as it’s non-conductive.

The wide treads have grip machined into them, and when you get to the top there’s a handy tray that can hold your tape, some hand tools, or whatever you need when you get there. The robust extra strengthening features and overall rugged design mean this ladder can take a lot of abuse, so it’s probably worth the extra money.

Harry's Smart Buying Tips

You won’t realise how handy a folding ladder or stool is until you have one standing ready at home, in the workshop, or even in the office. Reaching high shelves or lightbulbs in the ceiling doesn’t have to be a dangerous operation.

Main Types

All folding ladders and step stools can be packed away, nice and flat, to save you a bit of room in the kitchen or bathroom. The big difference between them is the number of steps. Usually, the more compact the ladder or stool folds down, the fewer steps you have to climb up.

Construction

One of the best materials for a sturdy folding ladder or stool is aluminium – strong but lightweight, it offers security but doesn’t compromise on weight. You’ll also find some of the best rolling stools and folding steps are made from tough ABS plastics. For heavier-duty steps, alloy steel or fibreglass is commonly used.

The height of the top step on your folding ladder or stool will determine how high you can reach – and extra steps give you flexibility while keeping you on solid ground.

Check what the maximum load weight is on your choice of the ladder if you are intending on climbing up while holding heavy items, as a combined weight may be above the maximum load.

Some stools roll freely on casters until you step on them and they lock in place. This is great for when you need them to be flexible but not foldable.

Usage

Having a folding ladder or step stool in your kitchen, garage or workshop opens a world of possibilities. You could add a higher shelf for more storage in your garage or reach the top of a kitchen cupboard without having to climb dangerously onto a chair.
