The UK's bestWall Mounted Patio Heaters2022 Review

Infrared radiation heaters are the best patio heaters. They transfer heat to the objects directly in front of them. This is a much more suitable method of outdoor heating compared to using convection heaters (which heat the air instead – a hopeless endeavour outside!).

A heater with a maximum heat output of 1500 – 2000W will be sufficient for most patio sizes. You will still have to sit relatively close to the heater – but that’s the case even with the professional infrared heaters that you find down the pub.

One of the most important things to look out for is a heater with a high waterproof rating. This is written as an ‘IP’ (ingress protection) rating. The best wall mounted patio heaters will have an IP rating of IP65 or IP66. The second number should be at least ‘5’.

Although it’s likely that you’ll use the heater predominantly on its highest setting, it’s still worth looking out for heaters with multiple heat settings. These can take the edge off summer evenings without needing to use as much energy.

Finally, I recommend looking for a wall mounted patio heater that comes with a remote control. Although not essential, this is extremely convenient. Plus, you may end up using less power if you know you can easily change the settings from your seat – you’re less likely to leave the heater on full blast the whole time.

When it comes to the best wall mounted patio heaters, my top recommendation is the Futura Deluxe Wall Mounted Patio Heater. It’s a remote-controlled heater with 3 heat settings (750 W, 1500 W and 2000 W) and it has an IP65 rating.

Futura Deluxe Wall Mounted Electric Patio Heater Review

An easy way to extend the amount of time you can spend sitting outside, the Futura Deluxe Wall Mounted Patio Heater provides plenty of heat and is easy to use – even without getting up from your chair.

It comes with two identical remote controls, meaning one can be kept somewhere safe whilst the other is in use, and they have a good range so are genuinely useful.

The infrared tubes provide instant heat when turned on, and there are three different heat settings which can be used to conserve power if necessary. It can run on 750 W, 1500 W and 2000 W. The lower settings won’t be very noticeable in an open patio environment, but seeing as it can also be mounted under gazebos or in summer houses and garages, they can be useful in more sheltered areas.

Outside, the heat is able to be felt up to approximately 1.2 m away. If you have a larger area, you may need to consider buying two units.

The Futura Deluxe heater has an IP65 waterproof rating meaning that it can be left outside even when it’s raining – it’s categorised as being protected from low-pressure water jets.

Allowing you to socialise later into cool evenings, or sit outside with a cup of tea when the sun goes down, the 63 x 15 cm unit is compact enough to be mounted on the majority of walls outside. It also creates a bright, warm glow of light, functioning as a light source outside as well as a heater.

The power cable is 1.75 m long and needs to be plugged into a protected outdoor socket. Alternatively, an electrician can hardwire the heater into the electrics. This can cause installation to take a little longer, but mounting the heater on the wall is a very quick process, with all fittings provided.

Overall, this is one of the best wall mounted patio heaters for extending the amount of time that can be spent outdoors. Instead of having to retreat inside when the sun goes down and the temperature drops, it can allow more use of the patio and garden.

Pros

  • Heats up very quickly with the high heat setting being effective for chilly evenings
  • Remote control allows you to operate the heater whilst sitting down
  • Easy to mount on your patio wall in around an hour
  • 2 remote controls included so you’ll have a spare if you lose one
  • Creates bright, warm glow, acting as a light source as well as heater

Cons

  • Cable is a little short at 1.75 m so mounting the unit at the recommended height of 2 m off the ground can be difficult
  • Need to be within 1.5 m of the heater to benefit from its warming effects outside

Costway Wall Mounted Infrared Patio Heater Review

For a patio heater with a useful timer option, the Costway Infrared Patio Heater has a built-in 24-hour timer. Having a timer will stop the heater from being left on unnecessarily.

With three heating modes, the Costway heater can be set on either 500 W, 1000 W or 1500 W. If used inside, in a conservatory or shed, the 500 W and 1000 W settings are often sufficient, but outside you will likely want to use the highest heat setting.

On 1500 W, the heat can be felt outside at a distance of approximately 1.5 metres, making it a useful heater for social gatherings as well as family dinners on the patio. A remote control comes included, allowing the heater to be switched on, the heat settings to be adjusted, and the timer to be activated. The control has a good range that means it’s possible to change the settings from a seated position.

Installation is straight forward, with all of the fittings needed for mounting the heater coming included. It’s also possible to direct the angle of the heater, which isn’t possible with all wall mounted models, making this one of the best wall mounted patio heaters for catering to different seating layouts.

However, it is worth noting that the 60 x 18 cm heater needs to be installed at least 2 metres from the ground, with a clearance of at least 80 centimetres from any roof or awning. On top of this, the manufacturers also state that it needs to be positioned at least 1 metre from flammable materials, such as wood. It’s therefore better suited to being a patio heater than an indoor unit.

Nevertheless, it will need to be fitted under some sort of cover because it is splash proof, but not entirely waterproof, with an overall waterproof rating of IP34. This means it is protected from water spray from all directions.

Pros

  • Easy to assemble and fix to the wall
  • Remote control means the heater can be controlled from a seated position
  • 3 heat settings, with the warmest perfect for very cold days
  • Heat can be felt up to 1.5 m away
  • Adjustable angles so can be directed towards where you’re sitting if you need a little extra warmth

Cons

  • For safety, needs to be installed 2 m from floor and at least 70 cm from ceiling, so won’t suit all patio layouts
  • Relatively low waterproof rating of IP34 - can't be fully exposed to elements and needs to be under some sort of cover

ATR Arttoreal Wall Mounted Electric Patio Heater Review

For a cheaper heat option, the ATR Arttoreal Patio Heater offers many of the same features as pricier heaters, but it won’t make quite such a dent in your bank account.

With a maximum heat output of 1500 W, it may not be the most powerful heater on this list, but it can still warm up a patio area or sheltered space. The heat reaches approximately 1.5 metres in front of the heater, making it useful for BBQs or parties. It takes the chill out of the air and creates a space that can be utilised later into the evenings.

Depending on the arrangement of your patio, you can angle the heater on its bracket in order to direct the heat where you need it. It’s also straight forward to install, with the wall-mounting bracket already fitted. The only challenge might arise from the 1.5 metre power cable which may be a little short depending on the location of your outdoor power socket.

It’s one of the best wall mounted patio heaters for working quickly; thanks to the infrared bulb, the heat is felt almost instantly – it takes approximately three seconds to warm up.

There’s also a remote control included so the heater can be activated whilst sitting, instead of having to use the buttons on the side of the unit all of the time.

It has a reasonable waterproof rating of IP55, meaning that it is protected from water jets from a nozzle (from any angle), so it’s suitable for outdoor use.

Overall, this heater can make a marked difference to how long you can stay outside on the patio, and it isn’t as expensive as some more premium models. With the amount of heat that it projects, it can keep up to four people warmer on the patio. There is only one power output setting though, so it’s not as easy to be as conservative with the electric as with some other heaters.

Pros

  • Sturdy and durable - perfect for outdoor use
  • Compact design and doesn’t take up a lot of wall space
  • Remote control allows you to operate heater from your chair
  • Quiet to operate so won’t disturb you as you sit on your patio
  • Heat can be felt at a distance of approximately 1.5 m from the heater

Cons

  • Only one heat output option of 1500 W - makes it harder to be conservative with electricity

Kingfisher Wall Mounted Electric Patio Heater Review

If you haven’t got much wall space available outside, the Kingfisher Electric Patio Heater is one of the smallest units featured on this page.

This makes it one of the best wall mounted patio heaters for more compact spaces, or areas that don’t have enough room for long tubular heaters. Measuring 50.5 x 25.2 cm, this could be a good option if you have walls with windows and other obstacles that would clash with larger units.

Although there is no remote control, it has a pull cord which is easy to operate. One pull of the cord will turn the heater on to its lowest heat setting (650 W), a second pull will activate the second bulb, resulting in 1300 W of heat, and a third pull accesses the highest power setting – 2000 W. To switch off the heater, you pull the cord a fourth time.

Whilst this means that the Kingfisher Patio Heater can’t be operated from a distance, it can at least be controlled without having to reach up to the heater itself. No remote control also means nothing to accidentally misplace (!).

The heater can be tilted through 45 degrees, making it easy to adjust depending on layout of your patio.

Compared to other infrared patio heaters on the market, this Kingfisher Electric Heater is very competitively priced. It’s one of the best wall mounted patio heaters to buy on a budget because, although it may seem suspiciously cheap, it’s still capable of providing a good amount of heat and extending the amount of time you can spend on the patio in the evenings.

One thing to be aware of though: the waterproof rating is relatively low, with a ranking of IPX4. This means that it is protected from low-pressure water jets only. Whilst this should be ok for most rain, it may need to be taken off its wall bracket (not overly difficult to do) in bad weather.

Pros

  • Very easy to mount to the wall
  • Easy to change through the different power settings using the pull cord
  • Compact size is useful if you are short on mounting space outside
  • Very competitively priced compared to other 2000 W heaters on the market

Cons

  • No timer function so you’ll need to remember to turn it off at the end of the evening
  • Short 1.5 m cable may not be long enough depending on position of outdoor plug
  • No remote control for changing temperature or switching off heater
  • Slightly low waterproof rating of IPX4 means heater is not quite as watertight as some others on the market

Sundate Outdoor Wall Mounted Patio Heater Review

One of the simplest and most understated heaters on this list, the Sundate 2000 W Patio Heater has a contemporary, minimalist design.

Doing away with more complicated elements like remote controls and pull cords, it has one on/off switch located on its side. It operates with a high 2000 W power output and the heat is provided by an infrared bulb. The aluminium casing helps evenly spread the heat on the patio.

With all of the necessary fittings included, the heater is easy to mount on the wall. It measures 65 cm long so will require more space than other models featured here. If you don’t have a lot of free wall available, you may find that this heater is too large.

It’s one of the best wall mounted patio heaters if you’re just after something simple to use, robust and effective to run. However, be warned that there’s no thermostat or timer – so you need to remember to turn it off on the unit itself.

It is, however, well suited to outdoor use, with a waterproof rating of IP65. It can therefore be left up, ready for fair-weather evenings sat out on the patio – be they during summer or winter.

Considering its size, price and waterproof design, this is a great value heater. Although it doesn’t have the ‘mod cons’ of some of the other patio heaters on this list, it works effectively and is suitably robust and convenient to use.

Pros

  • Extremely simple to operate with just a single on/off switch
  • Simple to put together and mount
  • High heat output of 2000 W takes the edge off cool evenings
  • Angle is adjustable so you can have it pointed directly towards you for extra warmth

Cons

  • No thermostat or timer function so need to remember to turn it off manually
  • Entire unit can get hot, including the mounting brackets so it shouldn't be left unattended
  • No remote control so needs to be switched on and off at the unit
  • There is only one heat setting so no option to turn it up or down in order to control power usage

How to Choose the Best Wall Mounted Patio Heater

There’s nothing worse than having to cut short a fun evening out on the patio with friends, family, or even just a good book, simply because it’s starting to get chilly.

A wall mounted patio heater can really increase the amount of time you’re able to spend out in your garden – no matter the season. If you’re looking for ways to get the most out of your outside space, these heaters will open up a lot of opportunities for you.

Imagine: even in winter you could sit and have a pleasant coffee outside for elevenses, or keep the summer parties going even into those cooler nights.

Finding the best wall mounted patio heater for you will depend on your budget, how much wall space you have available, and what functions you’d like it to have. The following information will help you make a more informed purchase:

Wall mounted patio heaters are useful for several reasons. Here are just a few ways they can benefit you, to give an idea of how you might like to use them in your garden:

  1. As you would expect, wall mounted patio heaters extend the amount of time you can spend sitting out on the patio. Instead of leaving your patio as a place that only gets used during summer days, a heater can greatly increase the moments in which you can be out there. Even on crisp, winter days you’ll be able to wrap up warmly and enjoy a seat outside for a while – one of life’s simple pleasures.
  2. Wall mounted heaters in particular are extremely convenient and practical. Most models are weatherproof, meaning that they can stay outside year-round and be ready for use within a moment’s notice. Whilst other types of outdoor heating, like firepits, can create ambience, they are also high maintenance and not suitable for use all the time (for example, if it’s windy). Having a wall mounted heater is an easy option that will make it more likely that you will use the patio for any odd occasion.
  3. Wall mounted heaters also save space. As a result, wall mounted heaters are just as appropriate for small patios as they are for large ones; no valuable floor space will be taken up by the heater.
  4. Finally, there’s no danger of the heater getting knocked over or becoming a hazard. This can be especially useful if there are young children or pets around – floor-standing heaters, or open flames, may not be appropriate for them.

In general, there are plenty of heaters available on the market. Some are infrared/halogen heaters, or classic electric heaters, whilst others run on gas.

When buying a heater for a patio, you should try to make sure you’re investing in a heater that uses radiation to heat, as opposed to convection. This will be the most efficient form of heater for outside. But what does this mean, and why does it matter?

Convection Heaters

Heaters that heat via convection work by warming up the air around the heater. When this air heats up, it rises. In an enclosed room, the warm air rises and circulates, thereby pushing cooler air into the space next to the heater. This process continues, and works as a very efficient way to heat rooms. Of course, this method of heating won’t be as efficient if the area isn’t air tight – or, for example, if the heater is being used outside.

Convection heaters won’t be efficient at transferring heat in an open space. A lot of the power that will go into the heater will be wasted, e.g. not efficiently transferred into heat that will keep you warm!

Examples of convector heaters include hot-water radiators, oil radiators, and fan heaters.

Radiation Heaters

Heaters that transfer heat via radiation are much better at providing heat outside. (Side note: although the term ‘radiation’ often has negative connotations, there are actually a lot of different types of radiation. ‘Heat radiation’ is perfectly safe, and is the method used by the sun to heat the earth.)

Heaters that employ heat radiation transfer their warmth directly onto the objects in front of them, without focusing on warming the air. As a result, they are very suitable for outdoor use. They’re not as appropriate for indoor heating because they are not efficient at heating the air in a room.

An example of a heater that uses heat radiation is an infrared heaters.

Whilst you won’t be using your patio heater the whole time, it’s still a good idea to keep running costs in mind.

The cost of running an electric heaters depends on how much power it uses. You can calculate the cost of running an electric heater per hour as follows: take the kilowattage of the heater and multiply it by how much your electricity provider charges you per kWh.

For example, if we presume that you pay £0.19 per kWh, and you want to run a 1 kW (1000 W) heater for one hour, then this will cost you £0.19. Two hours will cost £0.38.

If you want to run a 2 kW (2000 W) heater for an hour, this will cost £0.38, and two hours will cost £0.76.

You can keep running costs down by using your heater on its lowest power setting and by making sure to turn it off whenever you’re not using it. Of course, the lowest power setting will not provide as much heat as higher settings. But, regardless, it is good to try to buy a heater with several power/heat options, so that you have the choice (some patio heaters only have one power option).

When it comes to wall mounted patio heaters, extra features are not strictly necessary. For example, a simple patio heater with only an on/off switch is still going to do a worthwhile job.

However, having a few extra features can make life a bit easier, and can also save money.

On/Off timer

If your patio heater has a timer, it will automatically switch off after a certain amount of time. This can be a really good feature to have, especially if you’re keen to keep running costs down. It’s extremely easy just to leave a patio heater on constantly when you’re outside, but because of this you may end up using it more than strictly necessary. A timer can make all the difference as you won’t realise how the time adds up money-wise.

If you nip inside for five minutes to make a drink, and your heater turns off, you’ll have saved around £0.02 by not having it on for five minutes. This might not sound like a lot, but over the course of days, weeks and months, this money will add up.

Remote Control

Some patio heaters come with remote controls which remove the necessity to keep getting up to adjust the heater’s settings. Whether you want to turn the heater on, off, up or down, it can be really nice to have the option to do this from your seat. In the long run, it may also save you money, as you’ll be more willing to turn the heater off for a bit, knowing that you can easily turn it back on from the comfort of your chair.

Wall Mounted Patio Heater FAQs

You need to be really careful when using a wall mounted patio heater under a canopy. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the heater, and see if 1) they state the heater can be used under a canopy and 2) how much clearance you need to leave between the heater and any canopy/roof.

In general, you’ll need to leave at least 1 m from the top of the heater to the canopy. In some cases, this may mean that you don’t have enough space, as often the heater needs to be positioned around 2 m up the wall as well.

Approximately £0.19 – £0.38. You can calculate running cost by taking the kW power of your heater and multiplying it by how much your energy provider charges per kWh.

Example: if you’re using a 1 kW heater and you are charged £0.19 per kWh by your energy provider, it will cost £0.19 to run this heater for an hour. If you’re running a 2 kW heater, it will cost £0.38, 3 kW will cost £0.57, and so on.

A lot of patio heaters are waterproof, but you’ll need to check if this is the case. See if the patio heater has an IP rating. This will be written as ‘IP’ followed by two digits. The first of the two digits refers to how easily dust and other solids can get into the heater. The second of the two digits refers to how easily water can get into the heater. If the second number is 4 or above then the product is deemed waterproof and completely suitable for outside use. The higher the number, the more waterproof it will be against stronger jets of water.

If there is no IP rating, or the second number is below 4, the product cannot be said to be waterproof.
