Kidde Life Saver Carbon Monoxide Alarm Review

Kidde Safety have been producing fire safety products in the UK since 1917. With more than a hundred years of experience making alarms, extinguishers, fire blankets, and even escape ladders, they know a thing or two about home safety.

The Model 5CO Kidde carbon monoxide alarm is the simplest and easiest to use carbon monoxide alarm on this list. It’s as simple as pulling out the battery tab and placing it where it needs to be. It’s the best carbon monoxide detector in the UK for portable use, such as when camping or in a campervan, because it’s so light and easy to store, but it still detects as well as any of the bigger units on the list.

Fireangel CO-9B Carbon Monoxide Alarm Review

With decades of experience, and creating more than 50 million safety products, Fireangel are one of the most respected carbon monoxide alarm manufacturers around. Their CO-9B alarm is easy to install because it can be used as a free-standing unit. That means you’re not fiddling around with wall plugs, and you can even take it on holiday with you!

Rated to conform with British Standard EN 50291:2001 and proudly displaying the Kitemark, this is a standard bit of kit for anyone that runs a gas central heating system in their home or place of work.

Supplied with two AA batteries just like the Kidde Life Saver alarm, you simply pull the battery tab and it gets to work. The electrochemical sensor inside constantly scans for even low amounts of CO, to keep you and your family safe.

Mercury Battery Operated Carbon Monoxide Alarm Review

Mercury started life as a specialist aerial and communications company back in 1973 but have branched out into a diverse range of safety products from money checkers to metal detectors.

I think their COD100B carbon monoxide alarm is one of the best carbon monoxide detectors for the UK market. Even though the battery life on this carbon monoxide alarm isn’t the longest on my list, it still lasts for an impressive seven years without having to worry about changing the battery.

The LCD is useful for displaying the CO parts per million, and the operation is still nice and simple. The single-button control allows you to reset where necessary.

Scondaor Carbon Monoxide Alarm Review

Home safety experts Scondaor are in the business of making some of the best detector alarms going. Their clever carbon monoxide alarm doesn’t just alert you when CO levels are dangerously high, it shows you how many parts per million there are on an LCD display.

Powered by three included AA batteries, this alarm is compact, easy to read, and can be used free-standing or mounted on the wall. It’s an ideal addition to your camping gear or caravan, or wherever you plan to have an open or gas fire.

X-Sense Wireless Interconnected Carbon Monoxide Alarm Review

Home safety and security gurus X-Sense have made what I think is one of the best detectors on the market today, and for one very good reason. The X-Sense wireless carbon monoxide alarm can be connected to up to 24 other sensors to create a wide security network around your home. You probably won’t ever need 24, but it’s nice to know that the technology is there.

It’s also a rather good-looking piece of kit. It’s got a pleasing finish on the front that rings around a bright LCD screen. This screen clearly displays the current levels of CO in the room in parts per million (PPM) and the battery level, which is a handy little feature to have as well.

Powered by 3 AA batteries, there’s a visual alert as well as an audio one to let you know exactly which sensor has been activated. All alarms meet British Standard EN 50291:2001, and you can expect this alarm to last for many years without running out of juice.

Meross Digital Carbon Monoxide Detector Review

A company founded by experts from big tech firms like Microsoft, Meross make a huge range of smart devices for the home. This includes the smart-looking GS828 digital carbon monoxide detector. It’s a detector with a loud alarm, but it ramps up the volume slowly to avoid scaring whoever’s in the room.

Decked out with a large LCD screen, it displays the current CO levels in parts per million (PPM), the battery level, and if the alarm has been muted. It’s a simple-looking device that can either be mounted on the wall or taken with you as a free-standing alarm.

To save battery life, the LCD screen isn’t always on. To let you know everything’s working as expected, a small green LED flashes twice a minute though. If something’s wrong, a yellow LED flashes. It’s a neat system.

HEIMAN Carbon Monoxide Detector Review

Producing a range of smart home, home security, and smart energy-saving solutions, HEIMAN know a thing or two about making one of the best carbon monoxide detectors. It’s an essential piece of home security equipment that monitors the precise levels of CO in the air.

You get an LCD screen that displays the CO levels in parts per million, and two buttons to cycle through the menu and test the alarm itself. It’s a wall-mounted or free-standing sensor, so you can take it to wherever it’s needed.

Although the alarm isn’t quite as loud compared with the Scondaor CO alarm, for example, it’s still loud enough to alert anyone close by. It needs three AA-type batteries to work, but unfortunately they’re not included.

Carbon Monoxide Detector Buyer’s Guide

Carbon monoxide poisoning is a silent killer. Anywhere that fuel is burned indoors, there is the chance that this odourless, colourless gas might leak out, with potentially devastating effects. You can guard against this with a carbon monoxide detector that constantly measures the levels of CO in the air, letting off an alarm should the air become dangerous.

Where should I place my carbon monoxide alarm?

Buying a carbon monoxide alarm or detector is pointless if you don’t put serious thought into its placement.

Don’t place your carbon monoxide detector next to a window or door, on the floor, or behind curtains or drapes. Carbon monoxide alarms can be affected by heat sources and open flames, and never try to use them outdoors.

When it comes to proper placement, you should always follow the instructions included with your new CO alarm. The best carbon monoxide detector will give detailed instructions on placement, but there are a few things to help out if they’re not clear enough.

Most carbon monoxide detectors are best placed on the wall at head height in each room that contains a fuel-burning device, as well as in hallways and corridors. This means they can pick up CO gas as it drifts through your home.
