ParkerBrand 62CC Petrol Chainsaw Review

When you consider what you’re getting for the price you’re paying, I would highly recommend this chainsaw to just about anyone – it’s well-designed, versatile, powerful, and performs beautifully. If you only plan on using it for some light work around your garden, you may prefer something with a smaller bar (check out the Husqvarna petrol chainsaw that I tested), but, for everyone else, this chainsaw is a clear winner. To be completely honest, it’s not one that I would have initially chosen for myself, simply because I prefer to stick with brands that I know, but I’m so glad that I was able to test it out and experience its many merits.

If you’re not familiar with ParkerBrand, here’s a quick lowdown – they’re based in the UK, with their products manufactured locally. They pride themselves on offering high quality garden tools at affordable prices, and their 62CC 20” Petrol Chainsaw certainly meets the affordability criteria. However, is it really as high quality as some of the bigger-name brands out there?

Thanks to Storm Arwen, I had several mature trees down around my farm, along with a scattering of smaller branches, so I was ready to put this chainsaw to the test.

Assembly Ease

I always appreciate it when garden tools don’t take long to assemble, so I loved that the ParkerBrand chainsaw took just ten minutes to set up.

The process is simple – remove the side panel to fit the bar and chain on. Then, place the panel back and adjust the chain tension before screwing the panel on again. Only two screws need to be removed to do all of this, and the fact that this chainsaw comes with all of the tools that you need (along with a handy little tool bag to keep them all in) was a big plus point.

It also comes with its own measuring bottle, so that you can get your fuel and oil ratio spot on. Even more impressive, ParkerBrand included two chains with this chainsaw. This is unusual but very useful since it gives you a backup should your first one blunt or break.

Design

You can often tell that a garden tool sits on the lower end of the pricing scale just by looking at it, but that wasn’t the case with this chainsaw – at first glance, it looks just as well-made as higher-end models. Visually, it looks pretty professional too, with its orange and black colour palette fitting in well with the rest of the ParkerBrand product line.

This chainsaw comes with a big and sturdy 20” bar, making it suitable for large trunks. It also has an easily accessible on/off button, along with a large trigger, a choke button, and a petrol priming bubble.

Its hard protective cover fits over the chain easily – with some chainsaws, the cover is pretty tight and you need to jam it on, but this one slid on with no issues.

It’s also worth noting that ParkerBrand has included a holdall-style carrying bag with this chainsaw. This isn’t something that many other brands offer. Although the shoulder strap for the bag was a bit useless (due to the shape and weight balance of the chainsaw, the strap kept falling off my shoulder), it does also have two carry handles, which makes transporting this chainsaw much easier.

All in all, an impressive design. ParkerBrand seems to have thought of just about everything and there weren’t any design flaws that stood out to me.

Performance

Starting a chainsaw can sometimes be a frustrating process, so I was delighted to find that this chainsaw started first time every time, no matter whether it was warm or cold. That said, I did still press the priming bubble before turning the chainsaw on – it didn’t seem to push the petrol through properly, but, thankfully, this didn’t really matter since the chainsaw was so easy to get going.

I started by using the chainsaw on some smaller branches and it whizzed through them in no time, so I then moved on to the larger trunks. Its 20” bar gives it the capability to cut through trunks that are roughly 40” in diameter if you do a cut on each side, so I was able to slice through even the largest of the mature trees that had toppled during Storm Arwen.

I used this chainsaw continuously for about three hours and, by the end of it, it was performing just as well as it did at the start. I appreciated the automatic chain lubrication system as it meant that I could put all of my focus on cutting, rather than having to regularly stop to ensure that the chain was greased up.

Overall, fantastic performance – this is definitely a chainsaw that I could rely on, not only for cutting wood around my own farm, but also for professional use.

Power

I have to admit that I didn’t actually check the power stats of this chainsaw before I started using it. However, it was clear after the first cut that this chainsaw was significantly more powerful than some of the others that I tested.

This was confirmed later on when I finally looked into the details of its engine – at 62cc and 3.5HP, the only other chainsaws that could compare were the Hyundai and the P1PE, although the latter uses a Hyundai engine anyway.

If you only plan on using the chainsaw to cut smaller branches, then you won’t need quite so much power. However, for larger tasks, the engine that comes with this chainsaw will more than meet your requirements.

Ease of Use

No matter how well-designed or powerful a chainsaw may be, this doesn’t mean anything unless that chainsaw is also easy and convenient to use. Fortunately, this ParkerBrand chainsaw couldn’t have been more comfortable to handle, even for long periods of time.

This is partly down to how lightweight it is, meaning that it won’t leave you with aching arms. It may offer the same amount of power as the Hyundai, but it feels a little lighter. Its anti-vibration system also works well – you barely feel the chainsaw vibrating at all.

The fact that it has a long 20” bar gives it fantastic versatility too – whether you use it on small branches or chunky trunks, it cuts through everything like butter.

The only downside was that the chain seemed to blunt a little sooner than some of the other chainsaws that I tested. It also stretched more than most of the others. I would imagine that ParkerBrand knows that their chains aren’t quite as high-quality as they could be, which is why they included two with this chainsaw. That said, this isn’t a huge issue – you’ll need to replace the chain at some point anyway, so just buy a chain from a different brand (I would go with Oregon).

Safety

5

There are a few key safety features incorporated into this chainsaw. The first is the anti-kickback mechanism, which protects the user should kickback occur.

It also comes with a fast-acting chain brake. This is important should your chain ever snap – it’ll help to prevent that chain from whipping back onto you.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that, when you pull the trigger, the choke automatically comes off, which prevents you from flooding the engine. Although not a safety feature related to the user, this does help to keep the engine safe, therefore prolonging the lifespan of the machine.

Of course, the protective cover that slides over the bar would be considered a safety feature too. However, this is pretty standard – it’s something that all of the chainsaws that I tested had, along with plenty of safety stickers.

Keep in mind that no matter how many safety features a chainsaw makes use of, you’ll still need to wear all of the right protective gear when using any type of chainsaw, including this one.

Value for Money

5

I was a little shocked when I found out how much this chainsaw costs. For such a low price, you’re getting an amazing product. This is probably the best value petrol chainsaw of all the models that I tested. It performs just as well as the more expensive brands, with a powerful engine to match, yet comes in at a significantly lower price.

The fact that ParkerBrand has included a well-stocked maintenance tool kit (complete with a file for sharpening the chain, a screwdriver, two Allen keys, and a plug key), as well as a spare chain, a measuring bottle, and a carry bag, adds even more value.

It’s also worth noting that this chainsaw comes with a one year warranty. This may not seem like much if you’re only going to be using the chainsaw a couple of times a year, but, chances are that if you’re purchasing such a large and powerful chainsaw, you’ll be using it pretty regularly anyway. One year should be more than enough time to spot any manufacturer defects.
