1. Kidde 5CO Carbon Monoxide Detector[ SAVE 29% ]

Best 10 year alarm without digital display

best carbon monoxide detectors Kidde 5CO Carbon Monoxide Alarm
  • This is a brilliant and simple carbon monoxide alarm. If you’re not interested in an LCD readout of the current carbon monoxide level, then this is the best carbon monoxide alarm for you.
  • You can mount this alarm to the wall or use it as a free-standing device. This means you could take it to your caravan, holiday home, or even your tent if you want to!
  • The alarm is loud at 85 dB, but what I really like is the bright flashing LED light that accompanies it. For anyone with hearing loss, this is an essential safety feature.

  • The batteries that come with the alarm will not last for 10 years. The sensor inside the carbon monoxide monitor will last that long, but you’ll need battery backup at some point.
  • Compared with the premium-looking X-Sense carbon monoxide alarm, this one is lacking in the looks department. Even though Kidde is one of the best makes, the alarm looks a bit cheap.

Kidde Safety have been producing fire safety products in the UK since 1917. With more than a hundred years of experience making smoke detectors and alarms, fire extinguishers, fire blankets, and even escape ladders, they know a thing or two about home safety.

The Model 5CO Kidde carbon monoxide alarm is a simple, easy-to-use and reliable carbon monoxide detector. It’s as simple as pulling out the battery tab, placing it where it needs to be and hitting the test button on a regular basis. It’s one of the best carbon monoxide detectors in the UK for portable use, such as when camping or in a campervan, because it’s so light and easy to store, but it still detects as well as any of the bigger units on the list.

2. Fireangel CO-9B Carbon Monoxide Detector

Best 7 year alarm without digital display

best carbon monoxide detectors B0CKWGSX22
  • This is another dead simple and easy-to-operate carbon monoxide detector. The single button operates the test and reset functions. The internal mechanism does the rest.
  • It’s a small and compact little alarm. You can mount it on the wall using the supplied fixings, or simply place it where it needs to go. It doesn’t look out of place on a shelf or windowsill.
  • The alarm is incredibly loud and piercing. It’s perfect for anyone who might be a heavy sleeper or hasn’t got the best hearing.

  • It’s great that this alarm is so easily portable. However, for effective carbon monoxide detection, it should be placed high up on a wall or on the ceiling. Mount it on the wall if possible.
  • Several users have complained that the supplied AA batteries are of a low quality. If you’re relying on a device like this to protect your family, buy the best batteries you can afford.

With decades of experience, and creating more than 50 million safety products, Fireangel are one of the most respected carbon monoxide and smoke detector manufacturers around. Their CO-9B alarm is easy to install because it can be used as a free-standing unit. That means you’re not fiddling around with wall plugs, and you can even take it on holiday with you!

Rated to conform with British Standard EN 50291:2001 and proudly displaying the Kitemark, this is a standard bit of kit for anyone that runs a gas central heating system in their home or place of work.

Supplied with two AA batteries just like the Kidde carbon monoxide detector, you simply pull the battery tab and it gets to work. The electrochemical sensor inside constantly scans for even low amounts of carbon monoxide, to keep you and your family safe.

Best Tech
  • If good looks are something you’re interested in when it comes to buying a carbon monoxide alarm, this might be the right one for you. It features an elegant and modern design compared to the others.
  • Being able to connect this carbon monoxide alarm to as many as 24 others is fantastic. It means you can create a low cost wide carbon monoxide detection network in a fairly large size building.
  • A visual indication of battery life takes so much guesswork out of owning a carbon monoxide detector. You don’t need to remember when it was installed, just look at the screen!

  • Compared with the Fireangel CO-9D, this alarm doesn’t feature a peak carbon monoxide level memory function. You’ll just have to take readings from the LCD screen and work it out yourself.
  • It’s one of the more expensive carbon monoxide alarms on my list. You’re paying for the extra features such as an LCD screen and multi alarm connectivity. If you don’t need them, don’t buy this.

Home safety and security gurus X-Sense have made what I think is one of the best detectors on the market today and for one very good reason. The X-Sense wireless carbon monoxide detector can be connected to up to 24 other sensors to create a wide security network around your home. You probably won’t ever need 24, but it’s nice to know that the smart detector technology is there.

It’s also a rather good-looking piece of kit. This smart detector has a pleasing finish on the front that rings around a bright LCD screen. This screen clearly displays the current levels of carbon monoxide in the room in parts per million (PPM) and the battery level, which is a handy little feature to have as well.

Powered by 3 AA batteries, there’s a visual alert as well as an audio one to let you know exactly which sensor has been activated. All alarms meet British Standard EN 50291:2001, and you can expect this alarm to last for many years without running out of juice.

4. Heiman Carbon Monoxide Detector

Best 10 year alarm option with display

  • The 10 year working life is better compared with the Fireangel CO-9D. It might sound like a small thing, but a longer working life will save you money in the long run.
  • I like the big LCD display. Knowing the current level of carbon monoxide in the room is great, as well as having a visual readout of the battery level. It’s a real time saver.
  • Even if you never bother to look at the display to check the battery life, it still emits a loud beep when the batteries become depleted. It’s a bonus feature for the visually impaired, too.

  • This carbon monoxide monitor’s alarm is the quietest on my list. It only puts out 80 dB, compared with the 85 dB found on the others. It might not sound like a lot, but a loud alarm is a safe one.
  • If you wanted to use an alarm in a commercial setting, it would need to have the British Standard BS EN 50292:2013. It’s an effective alarm but doesn’t have this certification.

Producing a range of smart home, home security, and smart energy-saving solutions, Heiman know a thing or two about making one of the best carbon monoxide detectors. It’s an essential piece of home security equipment that monitors the precise levels of carbon monoxide in the air.

You get an LCD screen that displays the carbon monoxide levels in parts per million, and two buttons to cycle through the menu and test the alarm itself. It’s a wall-mounted or free-standing sensor, so you can take it wherever it’s needed.

Although the alarm isn’t quite as loud compared with the Scondaor carbon monoxide alarm, for example, it’s still loud enough to alert anyone close by. It needs three AA-type batteries to work, but unfortunately, they’re not included.

Harry's Smart Buying Tips

Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Anywhere that fuel is burned indoors, there is the chance that this odourless, colourless yet poisonous gas might leak out, with potentially devastating effects. You can guard against accidental carbon monoxide poisoning with a carbon monoxide detector.

  1. The best carbon monoxide detector should be built with an electrochemical sensor that constantly measures the levels of carbon monoxide in the air, letting off a loud audible alarm should levels become too high.
  2. The alarm itself should register no less than 80 dB.
  3. A reliable carbon monoxide detector should last seven to ten years. It is important to note that this figure relates to the working life of the sensor in the alarm, not the batteries that power it! (Some carbon monoxide detectors are mains-powered or sealed units that contain a lithium battery so the warning does not apply in these cases).
  4. The better carbon monoxide alarms feature an easy-to-read digital display that shows the carbon monoxide particle count, room temperature and battery level (assuming the unit is non-sealed). Some units store readings for the last few weeks.
  5. All carbon monoxide detectors should feature a tester button, an indicator to show the alarm is operational and/or a fault display light.

Carbon Monoxide FAQ's

Where should I place my carbon monoxide detector?

Buying a carbon monoxide detector or alarm is pointless if you don’t put serious thought into its placement.

To detect carbon monoxide don’t place the CO detector next to a window or door, on the floor, or behind curtains or drapes. Carbon monoxide alarms can be affected by heat sources and open flames, so never try to use them outdoors.

When it comes to proper placement, you should always follow the instructions included with your device. The best carbon monoxide detector will give detailed instructions on placement, but there are a few things to help out if they’re not clear enough.

For effective carbon monoxide detection, you should install carbon monoxide detectors high up on a wall or the ceiling. They should be located in all rooms that contain fuel-burning appliances, as well as in hallways and corridors. This means they are in the optimal locations to detect a carbon monoxide leak in your home.
