If you’re looking for a reliable, lightweight, and easy-to-use hedge trimmer, then you won’t be disappointed with the VonHaus Cordless Telescopic Hedge Trimmer With Extendable Reach. This well-crafted tool is definitely one of the finest VonHaus products that I’ve used (and, by now, I’ve tested quite a few!). It may not cost as much as some of the other hedge trimmers out there, but it more than holds its own when it comes to power and efficiency.

Loved for their DIY tools, furniture, and gardening essentials, VonHaus is a brand with a varied product mix, yet they manage to excel in all areas. Having used a few of their power tools before, I was excited to be giving their Vonhaus Cordless Telescopic Hedge Trimmer With Extendable Reach a try – it promises to cut through even the thickest and toughest of hedges, which is exactly what I intended to use it for.

How I Tested

Thanks to a few very overgrown beech hedges on my farm that hadn’t had a haircut for about three years, I had plenty to test this hedge trimmer out on. As you can imagine, some of the inner branches were quite thick, so I was intrigued to find out how this hedge trimmer would fare. I saved a large section of beech hedge for each of the hedge trimmers that I was testing, enabling me to compare them fairly.

I also put this machine to work on some sycamore trees, as well as a plum tree. Although its reach wouldn’t have been enough to tackle the tops of the trees without a ladder, it was more than enough to tidy up side branches.

The overall design of this VonHaus hedge trimmer is pretty simple – and that’s not a bad thing. Assembling the machine only takes a couple of minutes. The shoulder strap is already attached to the pole and there are only two sections to slot together – if you’ve used a hedge trimmer before, then you probably won’t even need the instructions.

For many people, one of the most important design features of a pole hedge trimmer is its reach. This one extends out to 244cm – it’s not the shortest of the hedge trimmers that I tested, but it definitely wasn’t the longest either. That said, the reach that VonHaus has chosen seems to fit this machine pretty well – it didn’t feel unbalanced or top-heavy like some of the others that I reviewed, which means that holding and using the machine is pretty comfortable.

The secondary D-handle that this hedge trimmer comes with helps with that too. To be honest, this isn’t a feature that I paid much attention to at first – all of the similar tools that I already own have a D-handle. However, reviewing other hedge trimmers that didn’t have this handle made me realise just how useful it is when it comes to manoeuvring the machine. Even better, the D-handle, as well as the rear handle, are both padded and soft, making them comfortable to hold.

The tilting head of this hedge trimmer rotates between -45°-90° – simply push the orange button at the base of the head to adjust it. You can choose from 10 different settings, which is more than what’s offered by other cordless hedge trimmers. Although 10 positions aren’t really needed for basic general hedge trimming, they do enable you to get more creative with shaping.

The blade that’s fitted onto this machine is nice and sharp. It boasts a dual-action design, meaning that there are actually two blades that move in opposite directions. This makes it much faster to cut a hedge, and, again, it also means that the blades would be great for shaping. In terms of size, the blade is 45cm long with a 41cm cutting length – this is sufficient for the average garden/hedge, and it’s a pretty standard blade length among cordless hedge trimmers.

To kick this hedge trimmer into action, all you need to do is push the safety button and then pull back on the trigger (assuming that you’ve already fitted the machine with a charged battery!).

Overall, I have to admit to being pretty impressed with how this hedge trimmer performed. Although the teeth spacing on the blade was only 14mm, which was actually the smallest of the five hedge trimmers that I tested, it seemed to do better on thicker branches than some of the other models. This could have been because the blade was sharper or perhaps better quality, but either way, it left behind a neat and clean edge each time.

At 3.8kg, this hedge trimmer is one of the lightest models out there. Not only is this ideal for people who aren’t able to carry heavy weights, but it’s also great for those who have a lot of hedge trimming to do – your arms won’t feel too tired by the end of it! The fact that you don’t need to use any force in order to achieve an even finish, even with thicker branches, makes it easier on the arms too.

I made the most of this lightweight quality by using this hedge trimmer on some of the more awkward-to-reach parts of my hedge, such as the section behind a polytunnel frame. Even though I wasn’t able to angle my body in the way that I would have liked, the fact that this machine was so easy to manoeuvre meant that I was still able to get the job done neatly.

Now for the downside – its telescopic extension. With a maximum reach of 244cm, VonHaus claims that this hedge trimmer “reaches the tallest hedge”. However, this definitely wasn’t true in my case – the machine would definitely benefit from a longer reach if it’s trying to save people from having to use a ladder. Power

5

VonHaus-Cordless-Telescopic-Hedge-Trimmer-Review-power

I have used several battery-powered VonHaus products in the past and have often found that a 2.0aH battery doesn’t give you much runtime. However, this cordless hedge trimmer is a big exception. I used it for about 45 minutes, almost continuously, before it ran flat.

I then swapped it with my spare battery (it’s interchangeable with all 20v VonHaus batteries) and continued working. I was finished before I needed to swap them back again, but since the battery fully charges in an hour, it would have been easy enough to do so. Each battery has a button and 3 LED lights to display how much life is left.

For a 2.0aH battery, it offers great power and runtime. That said, if you were going to be using this hedge trimmer for longer periods of time, it would be worth purchasing a larger battery for it.

It’s worth mentioning that the fact that this hedge trimmer is battery-powered makes it more versatile than those that run on mains electricity. You can use it anywhere in the garden without having to worry about extension leads or accidentally slicing through a cable!

Noise

5

Strangely, I wasn’t able to find an official dB rating for how loud this machine is. However, if you’re looking for a hedge trimmer that’s suitable for use around nearby neighbours, then this machine would meet the mark. It was one of the quietest that I tested, making it perfect for people in an urban setting.

Safety

The first safety feature that I noticed when taking this hedge trimmer out of its box was the plastic cover that fits over the blade – and I wasn’t impressed. Compared to those provided by other brands, it seemed flimsy and thin, so I wasn’t holding out much hope for how safe the rest of the machine would be.

However, I was proved wrong – VonHaus clearly prioritised safety when creating this hedge trimmer. The two-step trigger/dead man’s switch means that you, or anyone else, won’t be able to accidentally turn the hedge trimmer on, and I also appreciated the hand protector shield.

The shoulder strap that this hedge trimmer comes with plays a role in safety too. It enables you to keep the machine well-balanced, preventing it from dangerously swinging around. I didn’t feel too much of a vibration either when using this hedge trimmer, although that’s to be expected from a dual-action blade.

Value for Money

5

For what it costs, this hedge trimmer is fantastic value for money. VonHaus products tend to be pretty budget-friendly, and this one is no exception. For a very reasonable price, you get a well-designed machine with an impressively effective blade. If you wipe the blades clean after each use, they should last you for several years, especially if you regularly sharpen them.

What adds to the value of this product even more is the fact that it includes a battery and charger. Granted, the battery is small, but it gives you just under an hour of runtime, which would be plenty for the average hedge!

This hedge trimmer also comes with a two-year warranty, which is always great for some extra peace of mind when shelling out for a new garden tool.
