Best levelling rake overall

 SurmountWay Lawn leveling Rake

The SurmountWay Lawn Levelling Rake is the best lawn leveller overall thanks to its range of levelling head sizes and handle lengths. If you’ve got a smaller lawn, opt for the 43 x 25 cm lawn head.

This model is suitable for smaller areas of lawn and narrow spaces. The handle reaches a maximum length of 200 cm, but it’s made up of multiple parts which means adjusting the height is easy. Shorter users can remove a couple of parts in order to make the leveller more comfortable to use.

This lawn leveller does a good job smoothing loose and bumpy soil with relatively little effort needed on the user’s part. It’s easy to use and durable, with the heavy-duty stainless steel base designed to stand the test of time.

While this leveller is fairly heavy, this is needed in order for it to do a good job. It does come with a rubber grip on the handle which makes it more comfortable to use, but it’s worth noting that this slides around a little and in some cases, is more of a hindrance than a help!

Another slight issue is that the joint between the handle and board isn’t particularly durable. It hasn’t been welded, so it is a weak point in its construction.

All in all, this is the best levelling rake overall. It’s suitable for any lawn, while the range of available sizes means it’s suitable for any lawn and user.

The Landzie Lawn Levelling Rake Tool is the best heavy duty levelling tool. This lawn leveller has a head measuring 91 x 30 cm which makes it perfect for larger areas of lawn. It can cover a big area in fewer passes than those with smaller heads.

This lawn leveller has a good weight to it which makes it suitable for spreading topsoil or gravel, while also levelling out lumpy soil. It’s sturdy and well made, powder coated to prevent rust.

The ease of storage makes this rake a good choice if you’ve not got a lot of space. It hangs on the wall, while the handle divides into two parts so you can store it more compactly.

With a handle measuring 182 cm, this rake should be suitable for most gardeners. Unlike others on the market, there’s no way to make the handle either shorter or longer. Shorter users may find the handle is a little too long to use comfortably.

All in all, this tool is a great option if you’re after a good value leveller for larger areas. The large head means you can work across open stretches of lawn efficiently, while the solid build ensures it should last a long time.

While more expensive than other levelling rakes I’ve recommended, the quality of the PLBBJH Lawn Levelling Rake can’t be beaten. It’s been made from thickened 304 grade stainless steel which gives it greater durability and stability than aluminium alternatives. This makes it a reliable choice for heavy as well as lighter duty work.

While metal handles can often get cold and uncomfortable, this levelling rake comes with an effort-saving handle and extendable rubber grip. The grip will keep you comfortable for long periods of time, while it won’t get slippery if you sweat (and, let’s face it, lawn levelling can be tough work!).

For added comfort, the handle is also adjustable. It’s made up of 3 x 65 cm sections, with a total length of 195 cm. The base is large, measuring 76 x 25 cm.

The base is heavy, which makes it effective at a number of tasks including removing stones, breaking up small clots of loam and mixing soil with fertilisers. It can also be used to level out lumps of soft ground and prepare the garden for planting.

Overall, this lawn levelling rake is a top contender thanks to its great quality stainless steel construction and long handle length. The large base ensures it’s efficient across larger areas of lawn.

Lightweight and easy to use, the FLBTY Lawn Levelling Rake is perfect for those new to lawn levelling. It’s comfortable to carry and use thanks to its 4 kg weight.

This rake makes smoothing and grading finely divided stones or soil on the lawn easy. The rake itself measures 50 x 25 cm so it’s a good size for smaller spaces. You’ll be able to prepare the lawn for planting or spreading fertiliser.

The handle measures 109 cm and is made from heavy duty aluminium alloy which should last a very long time. The rubber grip ensures it’s comfortable to get into harder areas of ground. While the handle cannot be adjusted, this does mean there’s no potentially weak areas – it is one solid piece of metal.

This tool copes well with lawns planted with almost any type of grass. It’s a great all-round and versatile tool, and can also be used to level gravel.

Overall, this levelling rake is a great option for smaller spaces and benefits from being exceptionally lightweight. It’s easy for anyone to use, and can be used to level topsoil, compost and soft bumps in the lawn.

5. Scalebeard Level Lawn Tool

Best for large lawns

 Scalebeard Level Lawn Tool
  • Handle comes in sections meaning the length can be shortened to suit shorter users
  • 76 cm head makes it easy to work efficiently over larger areas of lawn
  • Does a good job spreading topsoil over lawns
  • Weighs just 4.5 kg so is easy to move in and out of storage
  • Handle can be adjusted from 71 cm to 200 cm depending on the height of user

  • Large head, although efficient, isn’t suitable for narrow areas
  • Handle screws together in several places which can weaken it

If you’ve got a larger lawn that needs levelling, the Scalebeard Level Lawn Tool is the top choice. This lawn tool has a large 25.4 x 76 cm head which makes it very efficient across larger stretches of lawn. Despite the larger size, it weighs just 4.5 kg, so it’s easy to use for long periods of time.

To accommodate users of different heights, this tool has an adjustable handle. Shorter users can set the handle to 71 cm, while taller users can extend it to 200 cm. This is ideal if different people in the household do the gardening, but it does mean that the handle itself is weaker than those made from a solid piece of metal.

This lawn tool can be used on any type of grass, including Bermuda, Ryegrass and Fescue. It works best when the grass is cut to 3.8 cm or less.

One of the best lawn tools if you’ve got a large lawn which needs flattening, this lawn levelling rake is well deserving of its spot on this list.

Alexandra's Smart Buying Tips

  1. Standard rakes can make it difficult to get a lawn completely level because they’re not wide enough, they can actually lead to more ruts and bumps in your garden!
  2. Lawn levelling rakes have a simple design and are very easy to use. Simply push the rake across the lawn in even strokes. The tines will loosen the soil and level out bumps.
  3. Consider the size of your lawn. If you have a very large lawn you’ll need a rake with a larger head.
  4. The handle length can make a huge difference to user comfort. Some come with adjustable handles, which means they can accommodate a range of user heights.

How to Choose the Best Lawn Levelling Rake

Maintaining a pristine lawn is a whole lot easier if the ground is level, but it’s fairly unusual for a lawn to be naturally free from lumps and bumps.

A level lawn will ensure plants get the same amount of water and nutrients, while lumps can leave some parts of your lawn wanting more.

Rough and uneven patches can be eliminated by using a lawn levelling rake, a tool used to smooth uneven surfaces. Levelling the garden with a lawn levelling rake can prevent waterlogging, remove stones and make your lawn a lot easier to maintain.

Lawn Levelling Rake vs Garden Rake

Lawn levelling rakes are inexpensive and very effective. While standard rakes can be used in gardens, it can be difficult to get a lawn or product applied to a lawn totally flat using a standard rake. This is because they don’t cover a particularly large area. Standard rakes can create ruts in the grass – the total opposite of what you want to achieve!

Levelling rakes are simple tools that level out soft ground, including compost and topsoil which has recently been applied. They are wide and flat, with bars across them. The bars pull debris from high ground onto low ground, levelling the ground. To level using a lawn levelling rake, you can use a simple back and forth motion across bumpy ground.

If you’re applying topsoil or compost to your lawn, a lawn levelling rake can help you evenly spread the mixture across the ground. You’re able to quickly move the mixture around while working it into the turf.

Standard garden rakes are designed for moving soil, but not levelling it. They break up and move clods of dirt and soil. While they can smooth out a bumpy flower bed, they won’t do much to level a lawn. They are more multipurpose than levelling rakes, so for this reason most gardeners choose to have both a garden rake and a levelling rake in their tool kit.

Choosing The Right Rake Material

All the lawn levelling rakes I’ve listed are made from stainless steel or aluminium. Stainless steel is durable and won’t rust, while those made from aluminium tend to have a little less strength. You may find that the head of a lawn levelling rake is made from stainless steel, with the handle made from aluminium.

The strongest materials will allow your rake to break up clumped and hard soil, as opposed to only soft materials.

Handle Design and Length

The length of the handle will impact the user’s comfort. Most tend to be between 150 cm and 200 cm although some levelling rakes have ‘adjustable’ handles. The adjustability usually refers to the handle arriving in multiple parts. One or two parts can be removed in order to make the handle shorter.

It’s handy to be able to change the length of the handle to accommodate different height users.

The downside to an adjustable handle is that the handle will be weaker. A handle made from one solid piece of metal is going to be much stronger than one which comes apart.

You should also look for handle features that make the rake more comfortable to use. Some have a separate rubber grip to hold on to with your other hand, allowing you to work for longer without fatigue.

Choosing the Right Levelling Rake Weight

Using a levelling rake is very simple. It requires a back and forth motion, and you simply allow the weight of the rake to do the work.

Having said that, a heavy tool will be more difficult for some people to use. Ideally, you need a rake with enough weight to do the job, without being difficult to manage.

The levelling rakes I’ve recommended range in weight from around 3 kg to 7 kg. If you think you’ll struggle with a heavier tool, opt for one of the lighter models.

The Importance of Rake Width

The size of the area that needs levelling will dictate the width of levelling rake you purchase. If you’ve got a large area to level and you purchase a tool which is too narrow, you’ll spend more time than you need to.

I’ve listed lawn levelling rakes with a variety of sizes of head. Those with very large heads are great across open stretches of lawn, but you’ll struggle to level smaller, narrower areas. For these areas, a rake with a smaller head is preferable.

Lawn Levelling Rake FAQs

A lawn levelling rake will make the task of levelling soft ground a lot easier. They can be used to level or grade gravel, topsoil, dirt, mulch and fertiliser, ensuring the matter is evenly spread.

Before levelling, you’ll need to water the lawn to ensure the soil isn’t too hard or dry. Be careful not to overwater your lawn, as waterlogged soil can be equally hard to work with. Water your lawn a few days before you plan on levelling it.

To use a lawn levelling rake, simply pull and push it across the ground in even strokes. The soil will loosen and any bumps will be broken apart and loosened. Allow the weight of the rake to do the work, you shouldn’t need to put in too much effort.

It is possible to level your lawn using a combination of topsoil and a lawn levelling rake. Applying a thin layer of topsoil to a lumpy lawn, then spreading it evenly across the area can help to level the lawn.

Levelling your lawn is best done in either the autumn or spring. It needs to be when the grass is in active growth, while also ensuring there’s enough moisture for any soil added on top to settle.
