Flymo certainly know what they’re doing when it comes to lawn mowers, and the Flymo Turbo Lite 250 Electric Hover Lawn Mower is a great value for money machine.

Powered by mains electricity, this hover lawn mower has a 10 m cable that allows you to get around most small to medium size lawns. It cuts sloped lawns as well as flat.

It has a narrow cutting width of 25 mm which gives you ample manoeuvrability around flower beds and obstacles, while the cutting heights range from 11 mm to 31 mm. It’s made primarily from plastic but this helps to keep the weight down, and it’s very easy to move from storage to lawn.

It’s also exceptionally easy to store. It folds flat for easy storage, and it can be hung on the wall of a shed or garage.

It’s fitted with a 1400 W motor which allows it to perform well across long as well as damp grass. However, it’s not suitable for lawns with bumps, instead better suited to a flat surface.

The ambidextrous handles ensure it’s comfortable for both left and right handed users.

There’s a couple of small drawbacks. There’s no cable hooks on the unit to keep the cable out of the way while mowing. Adjusting the cutting height is also a little tricky. You need to remove the blade and add spacers.

Besides these small issues, it’s really no surprise the Flymo Turbo Lite 250 has found its way onto this list. Especially if you’ve got a small to medium size garden, this is one of the best hover lawn mowers. It’s great quality, lightweight and very easy to manage.

Runner Up
  • 30 cm cutting width makes it manoeuvrable around obstacles and it’s still fairly efficient
  • Easy to assemble and the included instructions are good quality
  • Produces an even and smart cut every time
  • 10 m cable is long enough for medium size lawns

  • Grass collecting box has a gap around it which allows cuttings to escape
  • Doesn’t mow the very edges of the lawn so you may still need to neaten them up

Equipped with a powerful 1700 W motor, the Flymo EasiGlide 300 Hover Collect Lawn Mower is suitable for tougher conditions than other hover mowers. It can cut through thick and long grass, so is a good choice for lawns which are smaller but have been left to get overgrown.

Not all hover mowers have the option to collect the grass clippings. Some come with a grass collection box, which is a great option if you’d rather dispose of the grass clippings and not have them deposited back onto your lawn.

For a hover mower, it has a fairly spacious collection box of 20 L. While this won’t be enough to mow a large garden without stopping to empty, you should be able to mow a smaller garden without interruptions. The 30 cm cutting width ensures this hover mower is manoeuvrable while still fairly efficient across larger areas.

There’s 4 cutting height positions to choose from, ranging from 10 mm to 30 mm. The metal blade is long lasting and good quality.

Like a lot of Flymo hover mowers, this unit is made predominantly from plastic. Although it’s easy to assemble, some of the parts don’t fit together that well.

Another slight design flaw is that the collection box has a gap around it which does allow some of the cuttings to escape. While not a huge deal, it may deter those who are looking for a pristine look.

Although easy to store, there’s nowhere on the body of this machine to store the cable neatly.

All in all, this is one of the best hover mowers if it’s power you value. The 1700 W motor allows it to get through tougher, overgrown lawns.

Also Good
  • Folds flat for easy storage in small areas
  • Lightweight at under 7 kg so easy to move from storage to lawn
  • A good choice for small gardens
  • 10 m cable means you should be able to easily get around small to medium size lawns
  • Can be put together in around 10 minutes

  • With just a 15 L grass box, this wouldn’t be suitable for large size gardens

Producing a neat, even cut every time, the Flymo Hover Vac 250 Electric Hover Collect Lawn Mower tops my list as the best overall hover lawn mower. Not only does it produce an aesthetic finish, it’s also a great mower overall for small / medium size gardens.

The Flymo Hover Vac 250 has a 1400 W motor that gives it enough power to tackle domestic lawn grass. The 25 cm cutting width offers the user fantastic manoeuvrability around trees and garden furniture, making it a great choice for those with obstacles or narrow pathways on their lawn. There’s a 15 L collection box that collects the clippings.

With a 10 m cable, you should be able to get around most medium size lawns with relative ease. At 7 kg, it’s easy to move from storage to lawn. And on that note, storage is easy. The handles fold flat which means you can store it vertically or even hang it on the wall of your shed.

The casing is made predominantly from plastic, which helps to keep both the weight and the price of it down.

There’s also a range of cutting heights from 11 mm to 31 mm. The 11 mm height allows you to give your lawn that ultra-smart and short cut if needed.

On top of this mower’s specifications, it’s also very easy to use. The hover mechanism works well and allows you to mow in any direction. The handles are designed to be used by both left and right handed users and are equally comfortable for both.

There aren’t many downsides to this mower. The grass box is 15 L so it does fill up quickly. It’s not really designed for very large gardens, but few hover lawn mowers are.

Equipped with great features and an easy assembly, this Flymo model is a great choice for most UK lawns.

  • Plastic parts are sturdy and feel good quality
  • Easy to put together despite slightly unclear instructions

BLACK + DECKER have established themselves as a good value and reliable brand in recent years, and the BLACK + DECKER BEMWH551-GB Hover Mower is a great choice if you haven’t got a huge budget for your lawn mower.

This mower is compact and lightweight, designed for small gardens up to 250 sqm in size. It leaves a smart cut on sloped and uneven terrain, offering plenty of manoeuvrability to get around obstacles and trees.

As this mower is a budget option, the parts are lightweight and predominantly made from plastic. It comes with 10 plastic replacement blades included, so there’s no need to sharpen in between uses. However, although made from plastic, it feels good quality.

There’s 3 cutting heights to choose from, ranging from 20 mm to 40 mm, which is about standard for hover mowers.

The 10 m cable allows a fair amount of manoeuvrability around the garden. This is standard for most corded mowers, although you may need an extension lead if you’ve got an especially large lawn.

The instructions aren’t very clear, but this mower remains easy to put together. All parts are sturdy and feel good quality, but it’s worth noting that the blades are made from plastic so won’t be as durable as metal. If you accidentally bump into an object, the blades could break.

At 7.52 kg, this mower is also very easy to handle. It can be lifted in and out of storage with ease, while the hover function means you can move in any direction.

Overall, this lawn mower strikes the right balance of being affordable and good quality. It has many of the same features of many other models, and is ideal for those looking for a budget machine.

  • Front transport roller makes it easy to move the mower in and out of tight spaces
  • At just over 8 kg, this mower is very easy to lift and handle
  • Grass box has a window so you can easily see when you need to empty
  • 12 mm minimum cutting length is much shorter than others recommended

  • The maximum cutting height is 33 mm which may be too short for some users
  • Body is a little flimsy as it’s made predominantly from plastic

If you want that super short and smart cut, the LawnMaster 1500W 33cm Electric Hover Mower is the best choice. While others I’ve recommended have a minimum cutting height of around 20 mm, this model goes as low as 12 mm.

There’s 4 heights to choose from ranging from 12 mm to 33 mm, so it’s ideal for any season. The cutting width is 33 cm, and there’s a 20 L grass box so any clippings can be deposited later on. The grass box is transparent, so you can see as soon as it needs emptying.

This mower is powerful, with a 1500 W motor and T-drive that helps the mower adjust to tougher conditions, including wet and long grass. It’s been built for medium size lawns, with the 10 m cable offering ample flexibility.

It’s very manoeuvrable, designed for awkward shaped lawns, tight spaces and even gentle slopes.

The handles fold inwards which allows you to store this mower very compactly. Plus, at just over 8 kg, it’s very easy to lift in and out of storage. The front transport roller makes it easy to roll across hard surfaces such as a patio if you don’t fancy lifting it.

There’s also a safety feature to mention. The safe-stop brake will actively stop the blade as soon as the mower is switched off. The blade has been sharpened on both sides and can be reversed, elongating its lifespan.

All in all, this mower is well deserving of its spot on our list. Not only does it produce a super smart cut of just 12 mm, it’s exceptionally manoeuvrable and good value for money.

  • 36 cm cutting width makes it more efficient across larger stretches of lawn than other hover mowers
  • Cable can be wound around the cable tidy on the handle, keeping it neat and out of the way
  • Cuts well weather you are mowing in a straight line or side to side
  • Handles fold flat for easy storage, or it can be hung on a wall
  • 1800 W motor is more powerful than many other hovel models

  • Grass box doesn’t drop into place easily, needs to be coaxed in
  • Slightly noisier than other hover mowers on the market

If you’ve got a larger lawn or dense grass that needs tackling, the Flymo EasiGlide Plus 360V Hover Collect Lawn Mower is a good choice. The 1800 W motor and 36 cm cutting deck allows it to get through thicker and dense grass.

While it’s unlikely to mow acres and acres of land (as the cable is still just 10 m long), the 26 L collection box means you should be able to cover a reasonable sized area without emptying.  The vision window lets you see when the collection box needs emptying, so you can remove all clippings from the lawn.

Of course, when compared to petrol models, this collection box is still very small. But even the extra 6 L can make a difference if you’ve got slightly more lawn to mow.

It’s ideal for sloped and irregular shaped gardens thanks to its impressive manoeuvrability. However, it remains efficient across larger areas.

There’s 4 cutting heights ranging from 10 mm to 30 mm. The 10 mm cut is extremely short and smart, and may even be too short for some UK gardens.

It weighs 8.8 kg, so it’s fairly easy to lift in and out of storage. On that note, the handles fold down flat or it can even be hung on the wall. The attached cable tidy ensures you can keep the cable neat and out of the way, both when it’s in storage and when it’s being used.

Overall, this mower strikes the right balance of efficiency and manoeuvrability. While slightly noisier than others on the market, the increase in power ensures it can get through dense grass.

If it’s ease of use you value, you can’t go wrong with the LawnMaster 33cm Hover Lawnmower. Fuss-free in every aspect, this mower has a 1500 W motor, a weight of just 8.75 kg and an effective mulching functionality

There’s 4 cutting heights to choose from; from an ultra-low 12 mm to up to 33 mm for spring and autumn cuts. It can be moved seamlessly in any direction thanks to the hover mechanism, while the 33 cm cutting width ensures it’ll get into all the nooks and crannies of your lawn!

Grass clippings aren’t collected so there’s no need to fuss around emptying the grass box. Instead, there’s a mulching feature, so clippings are finely shredded and deposited back onto the lawn, improving the quality with time.

Like most of the hover mowers I’ve recommended, this model has a 10 m cable. If you’ve got a large lawn, you may need an extension cable.

The ease of use also comes down to comfort. This mower has foam covered ergonomic handles and dual switch levels, meaning it can be used by both left and right handers. The cable tidy allows you to keep the cable out of the way, while the carry handle ensures it’s easy to lift this mower in and out of storage. It’s light enough to hang on the wall of your shed, weighing just under 9 kg.

All things considered, this simple and fuss-free mower is a fantastic tool for anyone who values ease of use over anything else!

Clive's Smart Buying Tips

  1. Hover lawn mowers are a great choice for small to medium size lawns thanks to their ease of manoeuvrability. The narrow cutting width means it’s easy to get a hover mower into smaller spaces and narrow passageways
  2. Hover lawn mowers are usually electric (although petrol powered models do exist), powered using mains electricity or a battery. For most average size lawns, you’ll need a cable length of around 10 m
  3. While some have a grass collection box, others simply deposit the clippings back onto the lawn. Those with a small grass collection box will be lighter and more compact, but you may need to stop and empty more often.
  4. Most hover lawn mowers weigh between 4 kg and 10 kg. If you’ve got a long way to transport your mower between storage and lawn, you should consider a lightweight model.
  5. Hover mowers usually cut shorter than rotary lawn mowers so are ideal if you prefer a short cut. Some hover mowers can cut as short as 10 mm, although 20 mm should be perfect for most UK lawns.

How to Choose the Best Hover Mower

A hover lawn mower is a brilliant choice for anyone with a small to medium size lawn. This type of mower is compact, easy to manage and allows you to move in any direction.

I’ve compiled the following advice to help you make an informed decision when considering if a hover mower will work for you.

READ NEXT: The Best Budget Lawnmowers Under £100

What is a Hover Lawn Mower and Hose Does it Work?

Hover mowers were first designed in 1964 and are still very popular today. They work by creating a cushion of air between the lawnmower and the lawn. The cushion of air raises the lawnmower off the lawn, which allows the blades to cut the grass down. There’s no wheels, so the hover lawn mower can be used in any direction, even ‘swung’ from side to side.

The key benefit of hover lawn mowers is that they are very manoeuvrable. They don’t sit on wheels, so you can move them in any direction you want without having to reverse. If you have an awkward shaped lawn or lots of garden furniture, a hover lawn mower is a good choice. You won’t need to reverse into awkward areas, which can speed up your mowing time.

Hover mowers are also lightweight and quiet. They are usually either battery powered or corded, which means they run a lot quieter than petrol powered models.

How Much Power Do You Need?

The power rating of an electric lawn mower is measured in watts. The higher the wattage, the more power the lawn mower has. Petrol mowers, on the other hand, are measured in either cc or horsepower.

I’ve listed lawn mowers ranging in power from 1400 W to 1800 W. Those with a higher wattage will perform better in challenging conditions. They may be better able to handle long and wet grass. The smaller and flatter your lawn, the less power you will need.

Choosing the Right Cutting Width

Hover lawn mowers come in a range of cutting widths. A lawn mower with a wider cutting width will be more efficient across wide stretches of lawn. You’ll be able to mow the lawn in fewer passes, meaning mowing your lawn will take you less time.

The downside is that mowers with a wider cutting width tend to be less manoeuvrable. If you’ve got a garden with narrow passageways or lots of trees and flower beds, a lawn mower with a narrow cutting width is preferable. These are less efficient across open stretches, but they are much more practical when it comes to manoeuvring around obstacles.

READ NEXT: The Best Small Garden Lawnmowers

Grass Collection Capacity

Hover lawn mowers usually have a grass collection box, or they may deposit the clippings back onto the lawn.

If you’ve got a small collection bag, you may need to stop and empty it mid-way through mowing. While large collection bags require less emptying, they can make the mower heavier and potentially more difficult to manage.

Hover lawn mowers are generally designed to be lightweight and compact, so they’re unlikely to have huge collection bags.

Some hover mowers have a mulching function instead. This will finely shred the clippings and deposit them back onto the lawn. Over time, this will improve the quality and density of your lawn, retaining moisture during the summer months.

Look at the Adjustable Cutting Heights and Range

The number of cutting heights is also important. Most hover lawn mowers will come with a small range of cutting heights. The exact number will vary; while some have 3 cutting heights, more advanced models can have up to 8.

If you’ve got an overgrown garden, you’ll need to mow the grass slightly longer. Cutting too much off at once can damage your lawn as well as your mower. It’s best to start with just taking a small amount off, and gradually increase it.

For a smart cut, a height of around 20 mm is ideal. Take a look at our article ‘What Height Should I Cut My Grass?’ for more advice.

While hover lawn mowers cut very well, they rarely have the same number of cutting length options as wheeled mowers.

Hover Mower Comfort and Ease of Use

Hover lawn mowers are designed to be very easy to use. Unlike traditional mowers which can be very bulky, hover mowers float on a cushion of air and are exceptionally manoeuvrable. They’re generally lightweight and compact, which makes for easy storage.

Opt for a comfortable handle. Most have dual handles which means the mower can be operated by both right and left handers. Adjustable handles mean users of different heights can change the height to suit them.

Folding handles make the lawn mower easier to store. Most hover mowers are very easy to store, some with handles that actually fold flat.

Hover Mower FAQs

Hover mowers are loved primarily for their manoeuvrability. As opposed to traditional corded lawnmowers which can only be moved forwards and backwards, hover mowers float on a cushion of air, which allows you to move them in any direction.

The result is improved efficiency in awkward areas. They are perfect for those with irregular shaped lawns, as they can be ‘swung’ from side to side.

Many people also prefer hover mowers because they tend to be good at handling slopes. They are lighter when walking forwards and are usually easier to push or pull up and down hill.

Hover mowers also require far less assembly than traditional mowers. There’s usually very little work required to build a hover mower, meaning you can use it virtually straight out of the box.

Hover mowers shouldn’t really be used to cut wet grass, nor should any electric lawn mower. The lawn mower blades tend to rip wet grass instead of cutting it, which can lead to an uneven and messy cut. Wet grass can also damage your machine, as moisture gets into it.

If you do need to mow a wet lawn, you should opt for a powerful model with ultra-sharp blades. Otherwise, you’ll need to make multiple passes over the same area to get the same cut you would if the grass was dry.

READ NEXT: The Best Lawnmowers for Wet & Long Grass

Yes. Hover mowers work well on gentle hills and uneven lawns because they ‘float’ on a cushion of air. This allows them to get over bumps or small slopes. They are easy to move up and down small banks.

However, they should not be used for very steep slopes. For steep hills, you’ll need a powerful petrol powered machine.
