If you’re wanting to mulch your lawn clippings instead of collecting them, the LawnMaster 24V 34cm Cordless Lawnmower is the best option. This mulching lawn mower is cordless and weighs just 11.4 kg, so it’s easy for anyone to use and manage. It has a cutting width of 34 cm.

This mower offers two ways to dispose of your grass clippings, either mulching the cut grass or collecting it in the 32 L grass bag. The grass bag isn’t enormous, so if you’ve got a larger garden, mulching the clippings is a better option.  The mulching feature works very well and is a great alternative to collecting the clippings.

It’s very easy to assemble, with the entire process taking less than 10 minus. Simply slot in the handles, then secure them in place with the bolts. There’s two different handle height settings to choose from depending on your height.

This mower is lightweight (11.4 kg) and compact, which makes it ideal for smaller gardens or those who may struggle with a heavier machine. Although it feels flimsy at first (being made predominantly from plastic), I actually found it to be very decent quality. There’s a bright orange rear roller underneath, which will produce stripes on the lawn.

In terms of power, there’s two 4aH batteries included. You can have one charging while the other is in use, and the run time is around 30 minutes depending on the grass conditions. Mine lasted around 45 minutes, but this included stopping and starting a couple of times. There’s an indicator to let you know how much charge you’ve got left.

One of the best things about this mower is the intelligent battery management system. This adjusts the power of the mower depending on the conditions, for instance preserving battery life by lowering the power when the grass is short and dry.

I tested this mower in a range of conditions, and it performed surprisingly well on wet grass. It also did a very good job on longer grass, although extra power is required in thick patches. There’s 5 height settings to choose from, between 20 and 70 mm.

Perhaps the only downside of this mower is that, due to the lighter weight, the stripes produced aren’t that clear. There’s not enough weight behind the mower to push that roller down, which I suppose is a good thing!

All in all, I’d happily recommend this model as my top choice if you’re after a cordless mower that also mulches the grass clippings. The fact that it comes with two batteries and a fast charger make it much better value than others I’ve looked at.

If you’ve got an overgrown garden or the tendency to let your grass grow long, the Greenworks G40LM41 Cordless Lawnmower is a great option thanks to the maximum cutting height of 80 cm, longer than other cordless models on the market.

greenworks cordless lawn mower review front

The shortest cutting height is 25 mm, so you’ll still be able to get a neat and short cut if needed. It’s great for gardens up to 500 m² because clippings can either be collected in the 50 L grass bag or mulched, allowing you to keep mowing without interruption. The 41 cm cutting width ensures it’s efficient across open stretches of lawn.

The main downside of this mower is that it doesn’t come with a battery or charger included. So, while it might appear to be a very good price, the battery and charger will add substantially more to the price tag.

There’s 18 cm rear wheels that make it easy to move over various terrains, including bumpy and undulating ground. The handle also folds down for easy storage.

It’s fairly heavy for a cordless model, at 18.5 kg. While it’s not quite the weight of a petrol machine, those who prefer a lightweight mower should opt for another model. This is also minus the weight of the battery, so the total weight will be even more.

There’s 6 cutting heights to choose from, ranging from 25 mm to 80 mm. While the 80 mm setting is perfect for longer grass, you can still get a smart cut using the 25 mm setting.

Overall, this lawn mower does everything you’d expect from a mulching lawn mower, and has all the features you’d need. The 50 L grass box and mulching feature means you can mow for long periods without interruption.

The Kärcher LMO 18-33 18 Volt Cordless Lawn Mower is another cordless model. At 11.6 kg, it’s lightweight, while the 33 cm cutting width means it’s easy to manoeuvre around smaller gardens.

Design-wise, it stood up to the test. While made predominantly from plastic, it’s well shaped and rigid. One neat design feature is that the body of the mower is as wide as the wheelbase. This means that the blades cut almost as wide as the machine, making it much easier to get close to walls and fences.

While enough juice to cut a reasonable size lawn, this mower does only have 18 V of power. It comes with a 5.0 Ah battery which offers 24 minutes of cutting time. This battery can be used across a range of Kärcher machines.

It runs incredibly quietly, which was a pleasant surprise! At full speed, it’s no louder than a hair dryer, while the electronic brake means as soon as you let go of the trigger, the power cuts out.

Features-wise, it’s fairly simple. There’s a carry handle on top that makes it easy to transport, while you’ve got 3 mowing height positions to choose from. The mulching plug works well and ensures you’ve got the option to either collect the clippings in the 35 L bag, or deposit them back onto the lawn in finely chopped pieces.

Kärcher-LMO-18-33-18-Volt-Cordless-Lawn-Mower-Review-features-2

Once up to full speed, this mower has the power for long grass, but it can’t cope if you start it up on long grass. It gets bogged down and stops when it feels overloaded. Overall however, it cuts neatly and straight across the blades of grass at all 3 of the heights.

It also comes with a safety key, without which the mower cannot run. This is a great feature for those with children or pets, as you can leave the mower where it is and be certain it won’t run if you have removed the safety key. There’s also an electronic brake, so the mower stops dead if you let go of the trigger.

All in all, I was very impressed by this mower, despite the few shortfalls. It’s simple, affordable and easy to use, and that counts for a lot when it comes to domestic mowers.

Hyundai is a brand renowned for their powerful machines, and the Hyundai HYM3800E Corded Electric Rotary Lawnmower certainly met expectations. It’s a good size for medium size lawns, with a 38 cm cutting width, and it comes equipped with both a mulching feature and a rear roller.

The 38 cm cutting width ensures it’s easy to fit this mower through narrow gates and passageways, but it’ll also cover ground fairly efficiently in medium size gardens. There’s 5 adjustable cutting heights, ranging from 20 – 70 mm, as well as a 40 L grass bag.

It comes with a 1600 W motor that allows it to tackle long, overgrown grass as well as short. The roller leaves noticeable stripes on the lawn as well, while there’s a 10 m cable that offers you freedom to move around smaller lawns.

A particularly neat point is that this mower can be stored vertically, saving on space in the shed. The handlebars also fold down over the mower’s body.

Although heavier than some of the other models I’ve tested, at 12.5 kg, this mower is still easy to push and carry. Overall, it’s a powerful mower for medium size gardens, and the addition of the mulching plug means it’s very versatile.

If you’re after a mulching lawn mower that should suit most budgets, I highly recommend the GardenTek Corded Electric Roller Mulching Lawn Mower. This budget-friendly mower is lightweight and easy to use. Unlike cordless mowers, the 10 m power cable ensures you’ll have a continuous run time and won’t be limited by a poor battery life.

This lawn mower weighs just 9 kg. Which makes it ideal for those who value a lighter machine. There’s 3 cutting heights to choose from ranging from 20 mm to 60 mm, and a 30 L grass catcher.

However, there’s also a mulching plug that cuts the grass trimmings finely enough to return them to the lawn. The result is a healthier, greener lawn. This also allows you to mow for longer without interruption. This, along with the power cable, means you could mow a larger lawn with this machine.

There’s a rear roller which will produce those traditionally British stripes. This is a great feature for such a compact and affordable machine. The stripes produced are smart and visible, which was a welcome surprise!

Power-wise, it can cope with most domestic lawns. It can struggle in very dense or long grass, so this may need to be tackled with a strimmer beforehand. However, I did find it produced a neat (and striped!) finish on a well-maintained lawn, which is all I could really ask for.

Although it is lightweight, it’s worth mentioning that this mower isn’t self propelled. While this does allow you to move at your own pace, it doesn’t have that weightless feel that self propelled mowers do.

Some users also reported that this mower was difficult to assemble, although I didn’t find this to be the case.

All in all, this model is a great choice for smaller gardens as well as those who don’t want to be limited by a short battery life. The 10 m cable should be enough to get around most gardens, and the rear roller is a great extra feature.

Derek's Smart Buying Tips

  1. Cordless, corded and petrol powered lawn mowers can all have a mulching function, so you’ll just need to decide which one is best suited to your garden
  2. The cutting width is important as this impacts the manoeuvrability and efficiency. Those with a cutting width of 50cm+ will be more efficient across open spaces, but can make it harder to navigate flower beds and furniture
  3. If you’re not going to be mulching every time you mow, it’s worth looking at the size of the grass box. Those with a 40L container are suitable for small gardens, while large gardens will need a container of around 60L or more.
  4. On top of this, there’s a few more factors to consider. You’ll want a few variable cutting heights. Those with a height of around 20 mm are perfect for UK lawns, you’ll be unlikely to want to go any lower. If your grass is long, damp or slightly damaged, ensure there are higher heights available too (in the range of 40 – 50 mm)
  5. For most people, a lawn mower that weighs up to 30 kg is manageable without being too heavy. If you choose a model that weighs more than this, you should ensure it’s self-propelled. These are especially useful in hilly or uneven gardens.

How to Choose the Best Mulching Lawn Mower

With so many different lawn mower models on the market nowadays, it can be difficult to know what to go for. Many gardeners opt for lawn mowers with a mulching function. Not only does this allow you to mow more efficiently (as you won’t need to stop and empty the grass collection box), mulching can also improve the health of your lawn.

Take a look at the following advice to help you find the best mulching lawn mower for your garden.

What is a Mulching Lawn Mower and How Does it Work?

Lawn mowers with a mulching function can save time on emptying a grass box. While they normally come with a grass box included, their primary function is to chop the grass into very small pieces and distribute the clippings back evenly over the lawn, instead of collecting the clippings.

When you use a traditional lawn mower, the clippings are gathered in a bag, or discharged out the side or rear of the mower. Mulching lawn mowers finely chop the clippings, depositing them back onto the lawn. Clippings that are simply discharged out the side or back can lead to a messy looking lawn, while mulching is neater, and better for the lawn.

Mulching lawn mowers typically have a specially designed cutting deck that includes high-lift blades. These blades lift the grass and cut it multiple times, chopping it into very small pieces. The deck also has a plate that ‘sucks’ the grass up, allowing the blades to get closer to it.

Once the clippings have been finely chopped, they are directed up through the deck and discharged back onto the lawn. The result is a healthier lawn (as the clippings act as a natural fertiliser) and reduced garden waste.

Pros and Cons of a Mulching Lawn Mower

There’s a number of reasons why gardeners choose lawn mowers that have an option to mulch the clippings.

Pros:

  • By depositing the clippings back onto the lawn, you’ll treat your grass with a natural fertiliser. The clippings return valuable nutrients and moisture back into the soil, meaning you won’t need to fertilise it yourself. The result is a healthier lawn, reduced costs and less lawn maintenance!
  • Mulching can also save time, as there’s no need to stop and empty the grass clippings
  • Your lawn will be healthier as the clippings help to preserve moisture, moderate the soil temperature and reduce erosion
  • It’s also more environmentally friendly, as there’s fewer chemicals and fertilisers needing to be used on the lawn. Garden waste is also reduced

However, there are a few downsides to this type of mower.

Cons:

  • It’s important that you mow the lawn consistently. Mulching lawn mowers are designed to be used frequently, as the mower will likely struggle to adequately mulch long grass. If you tend to leave your grass to grow for weeks before mowing, a mulching lawn mower may not be for you
  • Mulching lawn mowers or those with a mulching plug can be more expensive than traditional lawn mowers
  • Mulching wet grass can damage your mower and ruin the look. It’s best to only mulch in dry conditions, which can be tricky in the UK!

The good news is that most lawn mowers have the ability to mulch, but also come with a grass collection box included. This means that if you have allowed your grass to get too long, or you’re mowing in wet conditions, you can collect the grass clippings instead of mulching.

FAQs

Are mulching lawn mowers a good idea?

Yes, although this does depend on your lawn.

Mulching lawn mowers are a good idea if you want a more environmentally friendly and low maintenance lawn care option. They’re easy to use, energy efficient and help save time, plus they improve the health of your lawn. What’s not to love?

The only reason you might prefer a different model is if you have very long or damp grass. In this case however, you could simply choose to collect the grass clippings instead if that’s an option.

Do lawn mowers mulch leaves?

Yes, mulching lawn mowers can also mulch leaves. This is a good option if you’re not wanting to rake your leaves and it can also help improve the health of your lawn.

Do you have to mow slower when mulching?

Ideally, you will need to mow a little slower than usual when you are mulching the clippings. This is because you need to give the blades enough time to mulch.

What is the best blade height for mulching?

For healthy grass and optimum mulching, I recommend setting the mowing height so that you’re cutting no more than a third of the height off each blade.

How often should you use a mulching lawn mower?

Mulching lawn mowers have been designed to be used regularly, when the lawn is relatively short and dry. If you let your lawn become overgrown, the mulching will not work as well and you could even damage your mower.

Can you use a mulching lawn mower on wet grass?

Wet grass is a lot harder for your mower to mulch, and it could actually damage both the mower and your lawn. Even cutting wet grass in the usual way is trickier than cutting dry grass, so I highly recommend waiting for your lawn to dry before mulching.

If large clumps of wet clippings are left on the lawn, they may damage or even kill patches of lawn.

READ NEXT: The Best Lawn Mowers for Wet Grass

Why does my mulching mower leave clumps of grass?

Mulching lawn mower blades need regular maintenance, and if your lawn mower is leaving clumps of grass on your lawn, it could be that the blades aren’t sharp enough. Ensure you have the blades sharpened on a regular basis, or you can do it yourself using a bench grinder.

Blunt blades can damage your lawn, so it’s well worth keeping on top of maintenance.

What season is best to mulch your lawn?

The best time to mulch your lawn is in the spring, at the times you would typically fertilise. Many people mulch all through the summer into the autumn, as you can also mulch fallen leaves at the same time. There are no downsides to mulching your lawn and, providing you don’t mulch very long or wet grass, you should be able to mulch whenever your lawn needs mowing.
