Things to Know Before Buying a Portable Pressure Washer

Portable pressure washers can really help make life a lot easier (and cleaner!).

They’re great for taking with you in the car: hosing down muddy wellies and bikes before loading them into the boot after a day in the country.

Not only that, by they can work wonders on jobs around the home too. Car cleaning, patio furniture washing, and patio clearing can all be done much more effectively with a pressure washer.

There are a few things to bear in mind if you’re looking at buying a portable pressure washer. Here are a few things to consider, to help you make an informed purchase:

This is something important to consider when it comes to portable pressure washers – what do you want to use it for?

There’s no point spending big money on a pricey machine with bells and whistles if you just want to hose off your dog. That said, if you want to wash your car on the street then you’ll need something bigger with more oomph.

Once you’ve figured out what the purpose of your pressure washer will be, consider the number of times you’ll use it. (Although, bear in mind, it’ll probably be more often than you think! They’re so handy without mains cables that you’ll be whipping it out every time a bird poos on the fence!)

Once-a-month use means you can go with a slightly cheaper option. You may not mind if it’s not quite as ergonomic or practical. However, if you plan to use it regularly, say every week, you need to make a bit of investment in quality.

Overall, choose the best cordless portable pressure washer you can afford and follow the care instructions because these will extend its life. Pay particular attention to the advice about charging – overheating a battery does it no favours, and it may benefit from being charged before it has 100% run down.

The great thing about portable cordless pressure washers is that they are easy to use. There are no cables to worry about, or that nagging feeling that mixing water with electricity isn’t safe.

It’s their size that makes them simple to use. Standard mains power pressure washers are often heavy and cumbersome, but little handhelds like the  Worx Hydroshot or the  Karcher KHB are lightweight and simple to bring out in an instant.

Think about your needs before buying. If you need to clean the car but have no outside plug or tap then the  Bosch Fontus is a great option – it holds loads of water and will last long enough to complete the job.

If you want to take your pressure washer in the car, and hose down your mountain bike or dog after a day of fun in the great outdoors, consider a smaller model which can be transported easily.

Remember, if it isn’t quick and simple – you won’t use it. Ease of use is really important.

You should also look for a portable pressure washer that has a simple gun and various attachments. This will make it more versatile and mean you can clean different things easily. A fine mist, pulsating jet and pencil jet are really helpful.

Battery life is something you must consider with portable pressure washers. There’s no way they can compete with petrol or mains powered models when it comes to run-time and power. However, they can push out a fair amount of strength and come into their own in certain situations.

Of course, the biggest problem is going to be how long the power will last. Portable pressure washers are battery powered by design and this does mean you’ll have a finite amount of cleaning time.

That said, a re-chargeable lithium battery will last for years if you look after it. They also have much more power than they did a few years ago.

Consider interchangeable batteries too. WORX products work on a range of compatible batteries, so you can use the same one in your drill and your pressure washer. If you have any products from a particular brand already, it’s worth checking if their batteries are interchangeable. You can charge one whilst using the other. This is a handy feature because often battery life is short with portable pressure washers.

That said, the Bosch Fontus cordless pressure washer runs for an hour on an 18 V battery with 15 bars of pressure. It’s the longest running battery powered pressure washer I’ve found.

Too little pressure and the job takes hours, too much pressure and you can damage paintwork and pointing. Pressure is all-important when you’re trying to choose the best portable pressure washer.

By nature, cordless pressure washers have lower bar pressure than electric and petrol ones. A battery just can’t compete with mains power, but ‘low’ bar pressure isn’t useless. By no means!

Consider the WORX model for example. It has a maximum of 22 bars which WORX says is equivalent to 10 times that of garden hose. Considering garden hoses aren’t drips, the resulting power from this portable pressure washer is still very impressive and useful!

The lower bar pressure you get from cordless portable pressure washers is best for lighter jobs like washing cars, glass, bikes and pets. Save high-pressure electric models for patios and concrete.

Another thing to consider is that low pressure just means it takes longer to get the job done, not that it can’t do the job at all!

Dragging a pressure washer around is a pain. When you’re in the market for cordless pressure washers the best ones are light and compact. Even better if all their accessories, nozzles, water tanks store ‘on board’ the unit.

For example, the Bosch Fontus is bulkier than some models, but stores all its necessities, including the water, onboard. As a result, there’s nothing else to think about when using it, apart from bringing that one unit with you. However, being bulkier, it may not seem quite as easy just to chuck it in the car and bring on the road.

The Karcher OC3 neatly stores the pipe under the water tank so it’s also pretty compact.

Smaller handheld cordless pressure washers can’t store everything in one unit, so you need to factor in a water source and how to transport the hosepipe and accessories.

It’s not a big deal but if you’re pushed for space have a think about it. You can buy a jerrycan for a few pounds to store water in, and a clip box can keep the accessories from rolling around in the car boot. So there are solutions!

WORX Hydroshot Portable Pressure Washer Review

The Worx WG629E is one of the best cordless portable pressure washers because it’s lightweight, draws water from any source, and can genuinely be taken anywhere.

This nifty piece of kit is compact and extremely light – just 1.65 kg – because it has no water tank or heavy casing. It’s easy to manoeuvre and use with just one hand.

The Hydroshot sucks water from whatever water source you need it to, be it a river, bucket or even a bottle of water. Its six-metre hose can be place in any water and it will draw from there. This is incredibly useful when you’re camping or hiking away from home.

It provides 22 bars of pressure powered by a WORX 20 V lithium powershare battery. WORX batteries are interchangeable so if you have other WORX 20 V tools then you can swap the batteries or have one charging as you work.

The accessories on this lightweight pressure washer are simple but effective -they’re all your need for the majority of cleaning jobs.

It has multiple pressure settings and spray angles. They can be changed using the 5-in-1 rotating head that switches from pulse to fine mist with a quick turn. The lightest settings are even gentle enough to hose down a muddy dog, whilst the strongest will help you clean a bike or patio furniture.

The 6 m hose gives you a lot of flexibility; you can move around easily whilst cleaning without feeling like you’re in danger of straying too far from the water source.

Kärcher OC3 Portable Pressure Washer Review

Now we have the dependable Karcher’s OC3 portable pressure washer. It’s one of the best cordless portable pressure washers around because it has great build quality, a removable water tank, and it’s gentle enough to clean your dog.

Karcher says you can leave the dirt where you found it with this machine, and that’s true. What this means is you don’t need to lug the mud back into your car after a mountain-bike trip, waiting until you arrive home before being able to wash it off.

This pressure washer is compact enough to take with you in your car wherever you go, and you don’t need a separate water tank or connector – this piece of kit is an all-in-one.

Handily, the hose and spray gun store beneath the water tank for a tidy space-saving finish.

The on-board tank holds 4 L of water which is plenty to clean mud from the car, wash down a mountain bike, or clean wellies. The water tank has a useful water-level indicator – a simple but really useful touch that other companies forget about.

The OC3 works on 6 V of power provided by two lithium-ion batteries. There is a level indicator for these too so you can see when they’re running low. They help this pressure washer push out 5 bar of pressure; it’s effective but gentle. Little Fido won’t mind you lightly pressure washing his feet, and you can also gently clean bird poo from plant foliage without destroying the leaves.

This is a great little portable pressure washer that’s perfect for cleaning jobs needing a light touch.

Bosch Fontus 06008B6070 Cordless Pressure Washer Review

The Bosch Fontus is one of the best cordless pressure washers around because it gives you total freedom to move about, has an onboard 15 L water tank, and can run for up to an hour.

Fontus was the Roman god of wells and springs, and I think even he’d be impressed with this machine!

It has an18 V rechargeable lithium battery that can be swapped with other 18 V Bosch batteries. If you have other products in the Bosch range, you could charge one battery whilst using the other.

The battery has an impressive run life of over 105 minutes on full power. This is more than the other pressure washers on this list and means you won’t get caught out in the middle of a job. The only danger is you’ll get overly ambitious and keep adding more jobs onto your list!

Once spent, the battery takes several hours to recharge.

Reviewers say that the 150-minute run-time equates to around four tanks of water. Enough to clean a whole car plus several mountain bikes and more!

The Fontus produces a maximum of 15 bars of pressure. This isn’t loads when compared to corded electric pressure washers, but it’s still much more powerful than a garden hose and able to shift stubborn dirt.

The included attachments make cleaning jobs simpler. You get a pencil jet for stubborn dirt, a 50-degree fan jet for rinsing, a 15-degree fan jet for small spots, and a shower jet to gently hose it all down. A Smartbrush comes as standard which is perfect for glass.

All the accessories, plus the water tank, are stored ‘onboard’; this can make the Fontus a little on the heavy side. However, the good thing is there’s no need to carry a separate water source or suction pipe. Plus, it’s very easy to manoeuvre, designed a bit like a wheeled cabin bag.

This power washer is great if you’re looking for the best cordless portable pressure washer with longer battery life. You’re unlikely to find yourself having to stop before you’ve finished the job, and the larger water tank will limit the number of times you have to refill as well.

Kärcher KHB 5 Multi Jet Washer Review

Karcher is one of the most reliable pressure-washer brands and their KHB 5 Multi Jet Washer is an excellent model. It’s definitely amongst their best cordless pressure washers because it’s very compact, has top-quality attachments, and real-time battery management.

So, if we start by looking at the battery: it’s an 18 V lithium-ion battery with 10 mins of running time from several hours charge. Now, I hear you – that doesn’t sound a lot right off the bat. However! When you’ve small jobs like blasting muddy boots, a dirty bike, or dusty patio furniture, it’s enough time to get a fair amount done!

It also delivers 22 bars of pressure which is pretty good for a cordless handheld pressure washer.

I really like the LCD screen which shows you exactly how much battery is left. It displays the information in run time; much better than other more cryptic ‘one-out-of-three blobs’ indicators. If you’ve got 8 mins left, it will say 8 mins. You don’t get more accurate than that!

The pressure washer comes two hose attachments: a multi-jet nozzle and a dirt blaster lance. The multi-jet has five different spray modes that clip onto the compact gun handle. This is really handy as it allows you to swap between a ‘gentle glass’ clean to a ‘tough mud’ jet stream with a simple twist of the tool.

The KHB is simple to set up. You just clip on the hose (you’ll need to buy this separately) and put the other end in a water source.

This is a long-lasting, manoeuvrable handheld pressure washer that you can use without an outside tap or power point. Just chuck it in the car boot and head off to muddy fields with no worries about traipsing loads of mud back into the car afterwards!

POWER Cordless Battery Powered Pressure Washer Review

The POWER pressure washer is up there with the best cordless pressure washers because it uses an induction motor, is whisper-quiet, and has 1300 PSI (which equates to around 89 bars of pressure).

So, let’s talk about that induction motor.

POWER says it’s the latest technology and creates less heat and more power from a lesser current than brushed-motor pressure washers.

It knocks out around 89 bars of pressure which is pretty high for a cordless pressure washer working on a lithium-ion battery.

Run time is around 35 minutes on a two-hour charge. Although with that kind of bar pressure you can get a job done in super-fast time anyway! There are two accessory lances that alter the pressure and spray patterns to help speed you up or slow down depending on the job.

This portable, lightweight machine has a 6 m hose which is long enough to reach around your car and patio furniture no problem.

Also, a big plus is its whisper-quiet motor which won’t disturb your neighbours. This is great news if you live in an urban area because you won’t have to worry about when you use it.

It also looks very sleek with its modern, round shape, and as a result its round, ergonomic handle is very comfortable.

Cordless Portable Pressure Washer FAQ

Yes. The excellent thing about portable pressure washers is that you don’t need to connect them to a constantly flowing water source. With a portable pressure washer you either fill up the unit’s water tank, or rest its hose in a body of water (bucket, water bottle, lake, etc.). So you can easily use a portable pressure washer if you don’t have an outside tap or hose.

Be careful when giving your dog a bath with a pressure washer. I would only advise using some of the less powerful power washers on their lightest setting. Test the spray on your hand first, you’ll be able to tell if the jet is too strong or not. Portable power washers are good because they’re not as powerful, and you can put warmer water in the water tank so that you don’t have to give your dog a cold bath. They’re also great for washing muddy paws with at the end of a walk before getting back into the car.

You can use your pressure washer if the temperatures are above freezing. Don’t leave the machine outside for long as it may get too cold. If temperatures are likely to fall below freezing after you pressure wash, you should make sure to dry the surfaces that you have cleaned (particularly if you cleaned your car) thoroughly.
