Wet & Long Grass Lawn Mower Buyer’s Guide
There’s a lot of words we could use to describe the weather in Britain, and unfortunately ‘predictable’ is not one of them. Trying to keep on top of the mowing is tricky at the best of times, let alone when it doesn’t stop raining for 2 weeks straight.
But while tall, wet grass can be a strain on some lawn mowers, there’s a range of mowers on the market designed specifically for tall and wet grass. Let’s take a look at all you need to know.
Which type of lawn mower should you get for your size garden?
First up, there’s choosing the type of lawn mower needed for your garden. This will depend on a range of things, and mowing your large garden with a small garden mower will take you hours!
Electric mowers like Bosch Advanced Rotak 650 and Flymo Speedi-Mo 360C are great for medium size gardens, as these generally have a good amount of power without the expense of petrol mowers. Make sure you check how long the cable is to ensure it can reach every corner of your garden – and if you buy an extension cable it needs to have enough amperage for your mower.
Cordless mowers like WORX WG779E.2 Lawn Mower are a good option for slightly bigger lawns, or those with a layout that can be tricky to mow. These battery powered mowers are more expensive than electric mowers, but they generally have a long battery life and can take on trickier terrains.
Robot lawn mowers like McCulloch Rob 1000 mower are a real treat, as they quite literally do all the hard work for you. Designed for small to medium size gardens, these are very expensive but they will save you hours of time.
Finally, there’s petrol lawn mowers which are ideal for those with large gardens. Very powerful, extremely durable and able to take on wet and long grass, these are the top choice for those who are serious about their garden. While expensive to buy, maintain and run, petrol mowers are generally a very worthwhile investment.
Cutting Height Range
Most mowers will have an adjustable cutting height, usually from around 20mm up to 70 or 80mm. The taller the better for long wet grass, so look for one with a max cutting height of around 80mm. While some mowers will give you 4 or 5 different options, others might have up to 10.
How to mow wet or long grass
Mowing wet or long grass is quite simple provided you have the right mower. First of all, drag a hose along the grass to get rid of some of the moisture. Raise the cutting height on the mower to as high as you can, and ensure your mowing blades are freshly sharpened. You want to give your lawn a quick trim as opposed to a full cut. In a few days, you can mow it down again a little shorter.
When mowing, keep the speed low and go carefully as your mower will need to work harder to get through the grass. Empty the collector bag more often than you would normally, as wet grass will weigh down the mower. Finally, mow in multiple directions as wet grass can flatten down against the lawn.
Once you’re finished, clean the underside of your mower deck to ensure there’s no damp grass built up. Remember that you will need to mow more frequently when the grass is wet.
While mowing wet grass isn’t ideal, the right mower will make it far easier. For its reliability while mowing both wet and dry grass, powerful engine and range of cutting options, the Hyundai 139cc mower is our top choice.
